VERSE: Dt15-09b

RULE: The Hebrew word H-Y-H, TO BE, always denotes EMPHASIS.*1

EXAMPLES
--------
(1)Dt15-09 "Watch yourself;do not abstain from loaning the poor
for he will call to God and you will BE in sin"

RASHI:"You will BE in sin" whether he prays to God or not*2

(2) Gn15-13a, Gn15-13b,Ex12-40a
   "Your descendants WILL BE foreigners
in a land not their own, and they will be slaves
and be tortured for 400 years.

RASHI: It is BEING FOREIGNERS that is emphasized and will
take place for 400 years. The other events (slavery and
torture only took place in Egypt and only for 200 years)*3
Indeed all the patriarchs were FOREIGNERS *4. Further supportive
evidence is presented *5 along with detailed computations on time*6

(3) "And Joseph WAS in Egypt" (Ex01-05)

RASHI: The emphasis denotes that even though Joseph had become
Vice King he was still the same person he was before * 7

(4) Nu35-13

"And the cities that you will make WILL BE 6 cities
3 cities will be in the Jordan side
3 cities will be on the Canaan side
  they WILL BE refuge cities."

RASHI: The verb TO BE emphasizes that the 6 refuge cities
function as ONE UNIT. The 6 individual cities do not give
asylum to accidental murderers UNTIL all 6 cities are built *8

(5) Nu18-18b "And the flesh of the FIRSTBORN gift
WILL BE YOURS like the THIGH and BREAST"

RASHI: "WILL BE" denotes emphasis.

There are 2 other sacrifices where people get
THIGH and BREAST--the THANKSGIVING and PEACE offering.
(THe priest has "eating rights" in one of these for
24 hours while in the other he has eating rights for 36 hours).

Hence we interpret that the priest can eat the FIRSTBORN
for 36 hours (vs 24 hours) (because the phrase WILL BE
indicating EMPHASIS suggests taking the longer period)

For an alternative derivation of this law see Nu18-19a

(6) Lv20-27 A man/woman that HAS an OV....he will be stoned

RASHI:The expression HAS (HYH) always denotes some type of
emphasis In this case the EMPHASIS is interpreted to
mean that there are witnesses (it was a public sin
For a complementary derivation see Lv20-27a

NOTE
----
*1 Note that in Hebrew the verb TO BE is not needed and is
therefore sort of superfluous In all verses cited the verse
could have been written without the verb TO BE (e.g. "Your
descendants will be foreigners (TGUR ZRACHAH)" or "You
will sin (TCHTAH)"---the special word TO BE is a style that
indicates EMPHASIS).

*2 In other words there is an emphasis in the verse
You will BE in sin)

*3
The verse mentions 3 things that will happen to
the descendants of Abraham. They will be
        >foreigners
        >slaves
        >tortured
However it is only the "being foreigners" which happened
for 400 years. And indeed we find that all 3 patriarchs
had "foreigner status" in many lands.

*4 The following {LIST} shows that all Patriarchs were
foreigners.

{LIST}

PERSON PLACE VERSE SHOWING THEY WERE A FOREIGNER THERE
------ ------- -----------------------------------------
Avram Phlistim 1-21-34
Avram Chevron 1-23-4
Isaac Chevron 1-35-27
Yaakov Egypt 1-47-4
Yaakov Charan 1-32-5
Yaakov Cham Ps 105-3
Isaac Grar 1-26

*5 Further supportive evidence comes from the fact that it
says "They will be foreigners in lands NOT THEIR OWN" (vs
They will be foreigners in Egypt). However the main evidence
comes from the phrase TO BE indicating emphasis and permanance
It is the "FOREIGNER STATUS" that is emphasized...the slavery
and torture were temporary and only in Egypt.

*6 Detailed computations on the 400 years may be found in
the main posting.

*7 That is, The totality of Joseph
---his simplicity,
---his shepard like style,
---his belief in dreams
all of it was there in Egypt.

What is being emphasized is clear; that
--the attempted murder by his brothers
--the attempted seduction by his masters wife
--the years of separation
--the offers of honor
all this did not change his personality.
The same shepard boy Joseph was still there.

*8 Further supportive evidence is derived from the EXTRA SENTENCE
"You will make 6 cities..3 in Israel and 3 in Jordan...
(by so doing you will have a unit of) 6 cities WILL THEY BE"

In the main posting it is pointed out that certain Jewish laws
are perceived as units (eg Sfirah, Lulav---you can't count the
2nd day unless you count the 1st days(according to some opinions)
and similarly it does no good to take up the Lulav if you don't
   have the ethrog)---

Certain laws are perceived as separate--eg on Chanukah if you
didn't light on the 2nd day you can still light on the 3rd day

So the refuge cities are being classified as a unit like
sefirah and lulav and not like Chanukah
