================== DERIVATION OF WORDS FOR GRINDSTONES ==========

 BACKGROUND
 ----------
 In a previous posting http://www.RashiYomi.Com/naming-8.htm we
 have discussed the 8 methods of naming objects. In this posting
 we explore how Hebrew names the TOP and BOTTOM GRINDSTONE.

 THE LIST
 --------
 THe list below shows items named by SIMILARITY OF FORM OF
 ACTIVITY. For example you SURF the web.

 The first record in the list explains the word for the
 TOP GRINDSTONE. The TOP GRINDSTONE in Hebrew is called
 the RIDER GRINDSTONE (The Hebrew root R-K-V means to
 RIDE (as RIDE a horse) and also can refer to the top
 GRINDSTONE).

 The reason for calling the TOP GRINDSTONE, RIDER is because
 the act of grinding has the FORM of a BUMPY UP DOWN RIDE

 Here is the list.
=================================================================
ORIGINAL MEANING OF CAPPED WORD DERIVED MEANING(Similar form)
================================= ===============================
A horse RIDE=BUMPY UP-DOWN motion RIDER grindstone=BUMPY motion*1
SURF the sea=BUMPY Journey SURF the web=BUMPY lookup*2
STORM=MANY SCATTERED raindrops BRAINSTORM=MANY SCATTERED ideas
LOUD=ALOT of noise LOUD DRESS=ALOT of noticability
TO DRUM=POUNDING motion           POUNDING(in mourning)on heart*3

NOTES
=====
*1 Every grindstone has a TOP and BOTTOM grindstone. The TOP
   grindstone is called the RIDER (R-K-V, the Hebrew root whose
   meaning is to RIDE). When you use the TOP GRINSTONE you
   use it in a GALLOPY TOP-DOWN motion.

*2 SURFING vs RIDING denotes a non-smooth motion with
   fast and slow periods and general bumpiness. We might
   say that RIDING is to RIDING A GRINDSTONE as SURFING
   THE WEB is to READING A BOOK. One is smooth and one is bumpy.

*3 The Hebrew root T-F can denote either
   --pounding a drum
   --pounding ones heart in mourning

 The reason for calling the BOTTOM GRINDSTONE, RChaYiM
 is because the FUNCTION of the bottom grindstone is
 provide SPACE (R-V-Ch) on which the TOP GROUNDSTONE
 can grind.

 In other words we are suggesting that the
 word RChaYiM(Bottom Groundstone) comes from the word
 R-V-Ch (Space). For a beautiful alternative dictionary
 meaning and etymology see footnote *10

 Here is a LIST of items named by FUNCTION.
=================================================================
# THE FUNCTION OF OBJECTS NAME ITS FUNCTION
==== ================== ================= =======================
NEW The BOTTOM GRINDSTONE provides SPACE to grind
(4) The function of UNITED NATIONS is to UNITE countries
(5) The function of a LAWNMOWER is to MOW your LAWN
(6) The function of a HANGER is to HANG clothing
(7) The function of a PHOTOCOPY machine is to make COPIES
(8) The funciton of a HEARing aid is to helps you HEAR
(10) The function of a CAN OPENER is that it OPENS CANS

----------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ------------------------
*10 Radack in his book roots suggests (disagreeing with Rashi!)
    that RaChaYiM refers to the GRINDSTONE SET. So the Dt24-06
    would mean
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    Dont take as security the WHOLE GRINDSTONE SET; and dont
    even take as security one of the GRINDSTONES like the
    top GRINDSTONE (since the bottom one is often fixed in the
    ground, it is usual to take the top grindstone)
    ----------------------------------------------------------

    Radack therefore derives the meaning of GRINDSTONE SET
    from the word RYACH which means SCENT, since GRINDSTONES
    pulverize items very finely like dust particles and other
    items that fill the air (like scents).

    An interesting Controversy among the early authorities
    that seems to have gone unnoticed!
