VERSE: Dt27-12a

================== THE BLESSINGS-CURSES =========================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi aligns Dt27-12:13
- These will stand TO BLESS the nation on Mount Grizim
- These will stand ON THE CURSE on Mount Ayval
The contrast of the capped words, TO BLESS vs ON THE
CURSE shows that the standers on these mountains were
not necessarily the actual BLESSERS/CURSERS. In fact
Dt27-14 explicitely says The Levites says the blessings!
Hence the Rashi that a) The nation faced Grizim-
The levites uttered the blessings-the nation said Amen
b) The nation faced Ayval-the levites said the curses....

TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: MEANING
----------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.

But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.

The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances.

Perhaps the most obvious way of explaining these alignment
differences is to assume that we are dealing with 2 WORDS
FOR THE SAME ITEM. This example is particularly potent in
poetry as the standard example below shows.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Gn49-11 describes the great abundance of the Messianic era
 ----------------------------------------------------
They can wash their clothes in wine
 ------------- their SUTHO in grape-blood
 ----------------------------------------------------

STUDENT EXERCISES:
------------------
-- Which word pairs in the aligned verses line up
-- Based on the Rashi alignment principle how would you explain
   the words you dont understand

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
-- The words CLOTH and the Hebrew word SUTHO line up
The word WINE and the phrase GRAPE-BLOOD line up

-- Hence, we translate SUTHO as CLOTHES
-- Hence we translate GRAPE BLOOD as WINE

This summary may be a bit too terse. You can browse the

Or you can visit the Rashi Yomi Calendar at

This calendar presents a day by day listing of Rashis.
The ALIGNMENT series occurs between 7-28-01 and 10-10-01.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
2 student exercises listed above.

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We simply repeat the above alignment

======= ================= ============ ============= ============
Dt27-12 These will stand TO BLESS the nation on Grizim
Dt27-13 These will stand ON THE CURSE on Ayval
Dt27-14 The levites WILL SAY TO the nation
Dt27-15 the nation WILL SAY AMN
Differs *1 *2 *3 *4

NOTES
-----
*1 So there are 4 parties in the Blessings-curses
   - The tribes standing on Grizim
   - the tribes standing on Ayval
   - The levites
   - The nation

*2 Notice: TO BLESS vs ON THE CURSE. The literal text in
   Dt27-14 is WILL RESPONSIVELY SAY.

From the passive phrase ON THE CURSE (vs to bless)
we infer that the people standing on the mountains
did not UTTER the blessings/curses. Rather the
LEVITES uttered them and the nation said AMN

The tribes did not stand TO BLESS/CURSE but rather
STOOD ON BLESSINGS/CURSES uttered by the Levites.
That is their standing was symbolic

*3 As just indicated it was the LEVITES who spoke TO
THE NATION. The nation only said AMEN.

*4 The names of two mountains where the nations stood

----------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ------------------------

*10 Rashi also used the tecnique of OTHER VERSES
See Jos08-30:35 for the description of what actually
happened. The Talmud in Sotah bases itself on this
Joshua text and the above alignment to indicate that
the Levites uttered the Blessings/Curses and the nation
    said Amen.
