COMMENTS |
*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
schools or home-schooling situations.
*2 Dt26-17a We illustrate how skillful use of lists leads
to a peachy textual emendation of Rashi and other rishonim
This posting is a must for those who want to know how
to read Rishonim. We also analyze a Rashi-Radack dispute
in which Radack wins.
*3 Everyone agrees that Nun-Samech-Gimel and Samech-Vuv-Gimel
mean to FALLBACK. The one exception is Songs07-04 where
it seems to mean fence. We cleverly show how Songs07-04
fits into the FALLBACK Pattern

QUESTION
-----------
In http://www.Rashiyomi.com/h15n4.htm or
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/dt26-02a.htm you speak about FROM
indicating part of a group.
Is that the intrinsic meaning of FROM. Or does it come about only
in the cases you mention because, as seen from the alignment you
use that the word MEM(FROM) is extra
Anonymous
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
ANSWER
-------
Good question.
The Malbim (Lv04-01 and Lv04-02) seems to indicate it as
a general rule. But it is not clear if
-- Only MEM-NUN indicates PART OF A GROUP
-- Only in certain circumstances it means Part of a group.
In other words I dont fully know the applicability of the rule
So I started off safe. I cited those cases where by alignment
we can clearly see that MEM(FROM) is extra and therefore
indicates part of a group. As I go thru many Parshiyoth
I hope to infer the whole rule.
In the end (about a year or two from now) we will have a super
duper posting with many examples, a full list and the detailed
rule.
This is the RashiYomi way.

SCAN FROM HEAVEN... |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi makes two points on Dt26-12:15
First Rashi points out the CONTRAST structure of the paragraph
- THINGS WE DO
-------WE gave tithe to the Levites
-------WE did not violate your commandments...
- THINGS GOD SHOULD PLEASE DO
-------Please bless us
Secondly Rashi cross references Lv26-03:12 in which God promises
to give us rain if we observe his commandments. This helps explain
the request SCAN FROM HEAVEN & BLESS US--referring to the rain

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RASHI RULES
--------------------------------
BULLETING--One of Rashis rules is to review, not individual
word meaning, or word grammar, but rather, overall sentence
and paragraph structure. We can infer items from overall
paragraph structure. In todays posting we infer items from
the paragraph style which uses a CONTRAST METHOD. This
contrast method is compactly exhibited in LIST 1
OTHER VERSES--Beside using rules governing meaning and
grammar Rashi also uses governing cross-reference. Very
often another verse can supply further details to a given
verse. In todays posting Rashi cites other verses where God
promises rain for observing the commandments. This supports
the reference to HEAVEN (From which rain comes) in the verse
request GOD, PLEASE SCAN FROM HEAVEN AND BLESS US
Here is the first list showing the CONTRAST METHOD OF THE CHAPTER |
VERSE | TOPIC | TEXT OF VERSE |
Dt26-12 | BACKGROUND | When you complete the TITHE cycle |

Dt26-13 | WHAT WE DO | Eliminate left over tithe |
Dt26-13 | WHAT WE DO | Give tithe |
Dt26-13 | WHAT WE DO | Dont violate the commandments |
Dt26-13 | WHAT WE DO | We dont forget You |
Dt26-14 | WHAT WE DO | We dont eat while in mourning |
Dt26-14 | WHAT WE DO | Didnt eliminate it while ritually impure |
Dt26-14 | WHAT WE DO | Didnt use tithes for burial |
Dt26-14 | WHAT WE DO | We listened to God |
Dt25-14 | WHAT WE DO | We did what you asked |

Dt25-15 | WHAT YOU DO | Scan from Heaven |
Dt25-15 | WHAT YOU DO | Bless us and our land |
RAIN FOR MITZVOTH |
Here is the second list showing that God gives rain in return
for commandment performance. This helps justify the phrase
SCAN FROM HEAVEN AND BLESS US (So as to give rain) |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE PROMISING RAIN FOR PERFORMANCE MITZVOTH |

GOD PROMISED ISRAEL |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi, quite simply uses the method of CROSS REFERENCING. There
are many verses where God promises to the patriarchs to give
them and their children a land flowing with milk and fruit juices
Consequently Rashi makes two comments on Dt26-15 which states
AS YOU SWORE TO OUR FORFATHERS--A LAND OF MILK AND FRUIT JUICES
--1st Rashi cross references those verses where God so swore
--2nd Rashi fills in the missing phrase (in brackets below)
AS YOU SWORE TO OUR FOREFATHERS [to give to us] A LAND FLOWING
WITH MILK AND FRUIT JUICES

RASHI RULE USED: GRAMMAR
RASHI SUBRULE USED: MISSING SENTENCE PARTS
----------------------------------------------------------
BRIEF EXPLANATION OF RULES
--------------------------
OTHER VERSES
------------
Rashi can sometimes simply justify a cross reference by a
citation. Thus if a verse says AS GOD PROMISED, Rashi might
cite verses where this occurs.
GRAMMAR
-------
Very often sentences sound better if missing words are filled
in. Rashi will indicate these missing words. Such use of
sentences with missing words occur in all languages.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
In the first list we cite verses where God promises the
Partriarchs to give Israel to us. In the second list we
cite other verses which cross reference these verses.
This helps justify the ellipsis. The first list contains
4 verses corresponding to promises to the 3 patriarchs & Moses |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE |
Gn15-18 | On that day God made a convenant to give us that land |
Gn26-03 | Stay in this land...because I will give you this land |
Gn28-13 | ...the land you sleep on ..I will give to you... |
Ex06-08 | ..I-ll bring them to the land..which I promised to giv |
CROSS REFERENCES TO PROMISE |
We present cross references to the promise to give us Israel
Notice the elliptical phrase SWORE [TO GIVE US] which Rashi
restores to Dt26-15b Thus the perception of this verse as
missing was not primarily grammatical but rather based on
cross reference |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH CROSS REFERENCE OF PROMISE OF ISRAEL |

A-M-R means BRANCH OF THOUGHT |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY:
-------------------
The Hebrew root Aleph-Mem-Resh has the following 3 meanings
-- AMiR, a BOUGH of a TREE*1
-- AMR, to SPEAK (A BRANCH of THOUGHT)*2
-- HITHAMAR, to be the TOPIC OF EVERYONES TALK(TALK OF THE TOWN)
In analyzing this Rashi we will have occasion to review other
Rishonim and their opinion on these 3 roots. We will show how
the skillful use of lists can help in analyzing Rashis. In this
case we come up with a peachy textual emendation of Rashi. We
also show the greatness of the Radack---since in this Radack
Rashi conflict Radack seems to win
---------------------------------------------------------
RASHI RULE USED: WORD MEANINGS
RASHI SUBRULE USED: UNIFIED MEANING
---------------------------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of
words the same way a dictionary does. There are many ways
for Rashi to explain meaning
-- Rashi can simply give the meaning of an unknown word
-- or, Rashi can contrast the nuances in two synonyms
-- or, Rashi can show a unity to diverse meanings.

Aleph-Mem-Resh. Footnotes add necessary details |

Is17-06 | BOUGH*1 | a few clusters left in the main bough*1 |
Gn30-34 | SAY*2 | And Laban SAID: Good--Its a sealed deal |
Dt26-17a | Talk of town | God & Jews are the TALK OF THE TOWN*3 |
Dt26-18 | Talk of Town | God & Jews are the TALK of the TOWN |
Ps94-04 | Talk of Town | These criminals are TALK OF THE TOWN |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Isiah talks about the
-----------
ROSH BRANCH
-----------
But Rosh can mean TOP or MAIN.
If you look at the Rishonim on Ps94-04 (Ibn Ezra, Radack...)
and Is17-06 they seem to interpret this as
-----------
HEAD BRANCH.
-----------
So that AMR would mean to be HIGH, HAUGHTY and BRAG.
But a more focused interpretation would be to interpret
AMR as the BOUGH. We conceive of a tree as
--a TRUNK (The MAIN BOUGH (ROSH AMIR!!!)
--the BOUGHS (Main branches from trunk)
--other branches
Thus we use textual emendation in meaning (ROSH=MAIN not TOP)
and interpret the verse as
-----------------------------------------------------
only a few clusters left in the TRUNK=THE MAIN BOUGH
-----------------------------------------------------
This is consistent with the verse and unifies other
meanings of the word. See the footnotes below for further
details.
*2 If AMR=SAY=BRANCH OF THOUGHT then we can understand
the contrast
-- DBR= CITATION (Statement of words)
-- AMR= SPEECH (BRANCH OF THOUGHT)
This is consistent with the traditional contrast mentioned
in the Talmud between DBR and AMR both of which mean to say.
DBR we are told, is harsher and colder
DBR would be the traditional COLDER approach since
CITING to somebody (instead of talking to someone) is
consider harsher and colder
*3 The RISHONIM who interpreted AMIR as HEAD BOUGH think of
AMIR as HEAD, HIGH and HAUGHTY and interpret these
verses as meaning BRAGGING.
But a more focused interpretation is to interpret these
verses as the HITPAEL of SPEAK. We have shown in
http://www.RashiYomi.com/hitpal-5.htm that the HITPAEL
tense refers to doing something INTERACTIVELY. (Or
see the Rashi calendar http://www.RashiYomi.com/calendar1.htm
in September of 2000)
Hence if AMR means TALK, HITAMAR would be to INTERACTIVELY
TALK. This would correspond to the colloquial English
phrase THE TALK OF THE TOWN and would indicate that
the item talked about is HOT.
So it could be a notorious criminal who is the TALK
OF THE TOWN. Or, it could be God and the Jews since
after the Jews conquered Egypt the Exodus was the
talk of the earth.
And yes, this peachy explanation comes, not from Rashi
but from Radack. After going over the Rashi-Ibn Ezra
interpretation of Dt26-17 as BRAG (HIGH BRANCH) Radack
gives as an afterthought that it would be perhaps
better to interpret this verse as coming from the
root AMR=To speak.

THE BLESSINGS-CURSES |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi aligns Dt27-12:13
- These will stand TO BLESS the nation on Mount Grizim
- These will stand ON THE CURSE on Mount Ayval
The contrast of the capped words, TO BLESS vs ON THE
CURSE shows that the standers on these mountains were
not necessarily the actual BLESSERS/CURSERS. In fact
Dt27-14 explicitely says The Levites says the blessings!
Hence the Rashi that a) The nation faced Grizim-
The levites uttered the blessings-the nation said Amen
b) The nation faced Ayval-the levites said the curses....
----------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: MEANING
----------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.
But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.
The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances.
Perhaps the most obvious way of explaining these alignment
differences is to assume that we are dealing with 2 WORDS
FOR THE SAME ITEM. This example is particularly potent in
poetry as the standard example below shows.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Gn49-11 describes the great abundance of the Messianic era
----------------------------------------------------
They can wash their clothes in wine
------------- their SUTHO in grape-blood
----------------------------------------------------
STUDENT EXERCISES:
------------------
-- Which word pairs in the aligned verses line up
-- Based on the Rashi alignment principle how would you explain
the words you dont understand
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
-- The words CLOTH and the Hebrew word SUTHO line up
The word WINE and the phrase GRAPE-BLOOD line up
-- Hence, we translate SUTHO as CLOTHES
-- Hence we translate GRAPE BLOOD as WINE

http://www.Rashiyomi.com/align-2.htm etc.
Or you can visit the Rashi Yomi Calendar at

This calendar presents a day by day listing of Rashis.
The ALIGNMENT series occurs between 7-28-01 and 10-10-01.
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
2 student exercises listed above.
The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.
TODAYS LIST
-----------
We simply repeat the above alignment |
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | PHRASE4 |
Dt27-12 | These will stand | TO BLESS | the nation | on Grizim |
Dt27-13 | These will stand | ON THE CURSE | | on Ayval |
Dt27-14 | The levites | WILL SAY | TO the nation | |
Dt27-15 | the nation | WILL SAY AMN | | |
Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 | *4 |
| | | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 So there are 4 parties in the Blessings-curses
- The tribes standing on Grizim
- the tribes standing on Ayval
- The levites
- The nation
*2 Notice: TO BLESS vs ON THE CURSE. The literal text in
Dt27-14 is WILL RESPONSIVELY SAY.
From the passive phrase ON THE CURSE (vs to bless)
we infer that the people standing on the mountains
did not UTTER the blessings/curses. Rather the
LEVITES uttered them and the nation said AMN
The tribes did not stand TO BLESS/CURSE but rather
STOOD ON BLESSINGS/CURSES uttered by the Levites.
That is their standing was symbolic
*3 As just indicated it was the LEVITES who spoke TO
THE NATION. The nation only said AMEN.
*4 The names of two mountains where the nations stood
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Rashi also used the tecnique of OTHER VERSES
See Jos08-30:35 for the description of what actually
happened. The Talmud in Sotah bases itself on this
Joshua text and the above alignment to indicate that
the Levites uttered the Blessings/Curses and the nation
said Amen.

SAMECH_GIMEL means FALL BACK |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Hebrew root Samech-Gimel means TO FALL BACK. It has
3 primary uses
-- TO FALL SHORT OF AN EXPECTATION
-- TO PUSH BACK (FALL BACK) someones borders (To steal)
-- The METAL IMPURITIES that FALL BACK during metal production
These 3 uses are compactly displayed in the list below
along with verses illustrating their usage. There are 2
stray verses that do not seem to fit into this pattern. They
are explained in footnote *10.

We present below verses with the 2 main meanings of
Samech-Gimel. Footnote *10 analyzes two stray verses
which dont seem to fit into the pattern. We suggest
interpretations of these verses making them consistent
with the unified meaning |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH MEANING OF SAMECH-GIMEL=FALL BACK |
2S01-22 | sword of jonathan doesnt FALL BACK |
Ps44-19 | our hearts will not FALL BACK |
Isa50-05 | I did not rebel backward--I did not FALL BACK |
Isa42-17 | may they FALL BACK...may they be embarassed |
Ps129-05 | may they FALL BACK |

Dt27-17 | Curse be he who PUSHES BACK his neighbors fence*1 |
Dt19-14 | dont PUSH BACK (FALL BACK) your neighbors fence |
-------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
Ez22-18 | they become like metal IMPURITIES*2 |
Isa01-25 | I will cleanse ...your IMPURITIES |
-------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
Sng07-03 | stomach is wheat textured;FALLING BACK on soft ribs*10 |
Mic02-06 | Dont preach to them;they won-t FALL BACK to embarassment |
-------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 Rashi (& Rambam Theft Chapter 8) note that there are
Two verses on theft
-- General prohibition of theft
-- Particular prohibition of theft by pushing back borders
Rashi/Rambam explain that when stealing by pushing back
borders, if done in Israel, the thief violates 2 BIblical
prohibitions (Dt19-14 explicitely states DONT PUSH BACK
BORDERS IN ISRAEL)
*2 During the metal production process the IMPURITIES FALL
BACK. Hence symbolically, IMPURITIES symbolize people who
DONT MAKE IT
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 The reason for attempting to interpret these two verses
as meaning FALL BACK is because ALL OTHER VERSES FROM THIS
ROOT MEAN FALL BACK.
Mich02-06 could mean
--------------------------------
DONT PREACH TO THIS NATION DONT
REACH FOR HUMILIATION OF THEM
---------------------------------
This interpretation would be consistent with the meaning
of Sin-Gimel which means TO REACH, OVERTAKE, CATCH UP.
But the root in Mich02-06 is clearly spelled SAMECH-GIMEL
Hence we can equally interpret this verse as
-----------------------------------------------
Dont preach to this nation; dont make them
fall back to humiliation (Because I God dont
want them to repent)
-----------------------------------------------
This interpretation is consistent with the verse
Songs07-04 is interpreted by all Rishonim as
----------------------------------------------
Your stomach is a wheat field FENCED by lilies
----------------------------------------------
But Samech-Gimel never means FENCE!!
A more reasonable approach is to focus on Song07. The lover
is describing the womans body: He describes (Going from
feet to head) her NAVEL, STOMACH and BREASTS.
Now the stomach goes up and down (during breathing).
- In a skinny woman the depressed stomach exhibits
the rib cage--this can be pointy.
- In a good looking woman the depressed stomach
exhibits furrows (ribs covered by flesh).
Hence the lover states
-- Your stomach is a wheat-textured field (Referring to
the light brown complexion of a healthy tanned woman)
-- Your depressed stomach falls back (during respiration)
to lily-textured (ribs covered by flesh).
In summary the correct interpretation of the verse would
be WHEAT FIELDS FALLING BACK TO LILLY PADS (It is
unnecessary to interpret this as referring to FENCES).
Anyone who has spent time watching wheat fields waving
in the wind with sunflowers and lilies on the side can
easily see the analogy with a breathing woman.
I believe the above a reasonable explanation of Song07-04

INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS

- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
- Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)
* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
