VERSE: Dt27-17a

RASHIS COVERED: Dt27-17a Dt19-14a

================= SAMECH_GIMEL means FALL BACK ==================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Hebrew root Samech-Gimel means TO FALL BACK. It has
3 primary uses
-- TO FALL SHORT OF AN EXPECTATION
-- TO PUSH BACK (FALL BACK) someones borders (To steal)
-- The METAL IMPURITIES that FALL BACK during metal production
These 3 uses are compactly displayed in the list below
along with verses illustrating their usage. There are 2
stray verses that do not seem to fit into this pattern. They
are explained in footnote *10.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of
words the same way a dictionary does. There are many ways
for Rashi to explain meaning
-- Rashi can simply give the meaning of an unknown word
-- or, Rashi can contrast the nuances in two synonyms
-- or, Rashi can show a unity to diverse meanings.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We present below verses with the 2 main meanings of
Samech-Gimel. Footnote *10 analyzes two stray verses
which dont seem to fit into the pattern. We suggest
interpretations of these verses making them consistent
with the unified meaning

NOTES
-----
*1 Rashi (& Rambam Theft Chapter 8) note that there are
   Two verses on theft
   -- General prohibition of theft
-- Particular prohibition of theft by pushing back borders

Rashi/Rambam explain that when stealing by pushing back
borders, if done in Israel, the thief violates 2 BIblical
prohibitions (Dt19-14 explicitely states DONT PUSH BACK
   BORDERS IN ISRAEL)

*2 During the metal production process the IMPURITIES FALL
BACK. Hence symbolically, IMPURITIES symbolize people who
   DONT MAKE IT

-------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------------

*10 The reason for attempting to interpret these two verses
as meaning FALL BACK is because ALL OTHER VERSES FROM THIS
    ROOT MEAN FALL BACK.

    Mich02-06 could mean
    --------------------------------
DONT PREACH TO THIS NATION DONT
    REACH FOR HUMILIATION OF THEM
    ---------------------------------

This interpretation would be consistent with the meaning
of Sin-Gimel which means TO REACH, OVERTAKE, CATCH UP.

But the root in Mich02-06 is clearly spelled SAMECH-GIMEL

Hence we can equally interpret this verse as
    -----------------------------------------------
Dont preach to this nation; dont make them
fall back to humiliation (Because I God dont
    want them to repent)
    -----------------------------------------------
This interpretation is consistent with the verse

Songs07-04 is interpreted by all Rishonim as
    ----------------------------------------------
Your stomach is a wheat field FENCED by lilies
    ----------------------------------------------

    But Samech-Gimel never means FENCE!!

A more reasonable approach is to focus on Song07. The lover
is describing the womans body: He describes (Going from
feet to head) her NAVEL, STOMACH and BREASTS.

Now the stomach goes up and down (during breathing).
    - In a skinny woman the depressed stomach exhibits
the rib cage--this can be pointy.

    - In a good looking woman the depressed stomach
exhibits furrows (ribs covered by flesh).

    Hence the lover states
-- Your stomach is a wheat-textured field (Referring to
the light brown complexion of a healthy tanned woman)

-- Your depressed stomach falls back (during respiration)
to lily-textured (ribs covered by flesh).

In summary the correct interpretation of the verse would
be WHEAT FIELDS FALLING BACK TO LILLY PADS (It is
unnecessary to interpret this as referring to FENCES).

Anyone who has spent time watching wheat fields waving
in the wind with sunflowers and lilies on the side can
easily see the analogy with a breathing woman.

I believe the above a reasonable explanation of Song07-04
