VERSE: Dt28-06a

=========== CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT OF A BLESSING ================

BACKGROUND
----------
Dt28-03:06 describes the blessings that will take place if we
listen to Gods commandments

THE TEXT
--------
The text uses a REPEATED PIVOT word style: e.g.
 ---------------------------------------------------------
 BLESSED are you in the CITY; BLESSED are you in the FIELD
 ---------------------------------------------------------
Note the repeated word BLESSED which creates a sense of
emphasis. We could losely interpret the verse as
 ----------------------------------------------------------
 You are BLESSED in ALL PLACES: e.g. the City, Field
 ----------------------------------------------------------

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi interprets the last verse Dt28-06 as follows:
The lower case words are the Biblical text while the
CAPPED words are Rashi
 ------------------------------------------------------------
 Blessed are you when you come [INTO THIS WORLD] and
 Blessed are you when you leave [THIS WORLD TO THE NEXT WORLD]
 ------------------------------------------------------------
Rashi interprets this verses blessing as referring to the next
world because of the PRINCIPLE OF CLIMAX one of the 13 style
principles of Rabbi Ishamel

The principle of CLIMAX is one form of the EXAMPLE-GENERAL
(PRAT-CLAL) principle. It states that when the Bible states
something over 3-5 similar phrases then IT IS ASSUMED AND
UNDERSTOOD that these 3-5 phrases should be developed in a
CLIMACTIC MANNER (even if the grammar and words of the text
dont justify it).

THE LIST
--------
In the first two columns of the list below we present
the 2 BLESSED phrases in each verse (e.g. BLESSED ARE
YOU IN THE CITY BLESSED ARE YOU IN THE FIELD) In the
3rd column we present the AREA of blessing (e.g. BLESSED
ARE YOU IN ALL PLACES). As can be seen by reading down
the 3rd column, those who watch the commandments are BLESSED
- in all PLACES
- thoughout TIME
- in all CIRCUMSTANCES
The climax is then to be blessed in all EXISTENCES (this
world and the next world)*10
================================================================
BLESSED are.. BLESSED are.. BLESSED are you
===================  =====================  ====================
are you in the CITY you in the FIELD in all PLACES*1
YOUR children your ANIMALS children thoughout TIME*2
your PERISHABLES your DRY GOODS*3 in all CIRCUMSTANCES
you WHEN YOU COME you WHEN YOU LEAVE in all EXISTENCES*4

NOTES
=====
*1 Clearly CITY and FIELD represent a spectrum of PLACES. One
   is secure (City) and one is adventurous (Field)

*2 The verse says that ALL offspring (yours, your animals,
   your fields..) will be blessed. This is therefore blessing
   throughout all TIME and all generations

*3 The Torah blesses goods whether they are perishables or dry
   and can be stored for a long time. Hence there is blessing
   in all circumstances

*4 All EXISTENCES are blessed: This world and the next world.
   All EXISTENCES combines the ideas of PLACE, TIME, &
   CIRCUMSTANCE

------------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES ----------------------

*10 Please note that
 - there is nothing in the MEANING OF WORDS justifying this Rashi
 - there is nothing in the GRAMMAR OF WORDS justifying this Rashi
 - it is rather the STYLE OF THE PARAGRAPH that justifies Rashi

  The rules of style require INTERPRETING the 4 verses of
  blessing developmentally leading to a climax: The climax in
  this case is the blessing of the next world

 We emphasize that the SOLE reason Rashi interpreted the verse
 this way is because of the rules of style requiring a CLIMACTIC
 development. Furthermore since this is a Biblical rule of style
 it must be considered the simple meaning of the text.
