COMMENTS

*1 Rashi finds 2 Biblical chapters promising reward and
punishment for observance or non-observance of commandments
   Rashi aligns these two chapters

*2 The phrase GO TO WAR AND BOOT BOOTY is an example of
REPETITION. Repetition demands BROADENING terms to include
   cases ordinarily not expected

*3 (A bit on the delightful and fanciful side) The root letter
Shin means THAT or THOSE. e.g. The SHAYGAL (Striptease) are
THOSE (Shin) who UNCOVER(GLH). See this delightful posting
   for other examples

*4 A weird Rashi is successfully defended using the Rabbi
Ishmael Principle of Climax. 4 Verses on blessing promise
blessings in all PLACES, TIMES, AND CIRCUMSTANCES. Hence
Rashi interprets the 4th verse CLIMACTICALLY as promising
blessing in all modes of existence: In this world and the
   next world.

JEWS ACCEPTED THE TORAH IN SINAI & MOAB

BACKGROUND
----------
It is well known that the Jews received the 10 commandments and
the Torah at Sinai. After explaining the law, Moses further
explained that the Jews would receive blessings if they
observed the commandments and would be cursed if they violated
the commandments

THE TEXT Dt28-69
-----------------
---------------------------------------------------------
These (The above Biblical chapter of blessings for following
Gods law and curses for violating Gods law) are the words
of the Treaty that God ratified between Him and the Jewish
People BESIDES THE TREATY THAT GOD RATIFIED WITH THEM IN
CHOREB.
---------------------------------------------------------

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi-is-Simple: He simply cross-references the texts of
blessings and cursings in Moab and Sinai. This linking of
BLESSINGS and CURSES to observance/non-observance
- is stated in Lv26 (at Mount Sinai)
- is stated in Dt28 (at the plains of Moab)

THE LIST
---------------------------------
Here are the ALIGNED Chapters.*10
PLACECHAPTER OF BLESSINGSCHAPTER OF CURSESNOTES
MOABDt28-01:14Dt28-15:69*1
CHOREBLv26-03:13Lv26-14:46*2
COMMENTS

*1 The Bible explicitly identifies the place where Moses
delivered his fairwell message as Moab. See Dt01-05,Dt34-01
Thus all of Deuteronomy was stated in Moab.

*2 The Leviticus blessings and curses were stated at Sinai (See
Lv01-01,Lv25-01). Furthermore the Bible explicitly identifies
Chorev and Sinai as two names for the place where the 10
   commandments were given(See Dt04-10, Dt04-15,and Ex19-01)

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Technically speaking this ALIGNMENT is different than
other ALIGNMENTS. Other ALIGNMENTS are alignments of WORDS:
That is two sentences will be almost the same except for
certain words in which they differ. By contrast
the above alignment is an alignment of CONCEPTS. The two
chapters both have BLESSINGS & CURSES for OBSERVANCE or
NON-OBSERVANCE of Gods laws. Thus it is the CONCEPTS that
align: There is no commonality of WORDS.

VERSE: Dt28-06a

CLIMACTIC DEVELOPMENT OF A BLESSING

BACKGROUND
----------
Dt28-03:06 describes the blessings that will take place if we
listen to Gods commandments

THE TEXT
--------
The text uses a REPEATED PIVOT word style: e.g.
---------------------------------------------------------
BLESSED are you in the CITY; BLESSED are you in the FIELD
---------------------------------------------------------
Note the repeated word BLESSED which creates a sense of
emphasis. We could losely interpret the verse as
----------------------------------------------------------
You are BLESSED in ALL PLACES: e.g. the City, Field
----------------------------------------------------------

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi interprets the last verse Dt28-06 as follows:
The lower case words are the Biblical text while the
CAPPED words are Rashi
------------------------------------------------------------
Blessed are you when you come [INTO THIS WORLD] and
Blessed are you when you leave [THIS WORLD TO THE NEXT WORLD]
------------------------------------------------------------
Rashi interprets this verses blessing as referring to the next
world because of the PRINCIPLE OF CLIMAX one of the 13 style
principles of Rabbi Ishamel

The principle of CLIMAX is one form of the EXAMPLE-GENERAL
(PRAT-CLAL) principle. It states that when the Bible states
something over 3-5 similar phrases then IT IS ASSUMED AND
UNDERSTOOD that these 3-5 phrases should be developed in a
CLIMACTIC MANNER (even if the grammar and words of the text
dont justify it).

THE REFERENCES
--------------
The following URLS explain the Sinaitically-transmitted-Rabbi-
Ishmael Guidelines of Style that require CLIMACTIC interpretation
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example8.htm
http://www.RashiYOmi.Com/example9.htm
Further examples are presented in these URLs.

THE LIST
--------
In the first two columns of the list below we present
the 2 BLESSED phrases in each verse (e.g. BLESSED ARE
YOU IN THE CITY BLESSED ARE YOU IN THE FIELD) In the
3rd column we present the AREA of blessing (e.g. BLESSED
ARE YOU IN ALL PLACES). As can be seen by reading down
the 3rd column, those who watch the commandments are BLESSED
- in all PLACES
- thoughout TIME
- in all CIRCUMSTANCES
The climax is then to be blessed in all EXISTENCES (this
world and the next world)*10
BLESSED are..BLESSED are..BLESSED are you
are you in the CITYyou in the FIELDin all PLACES*1
YOUR childrenyour ANIMALS childrenthoughout TIME*2
your PERISHABLESyour DRY GOODS*3in all CIRCUMSTANCES
you WHEN YOU COMEyou WHEN YOU LEAVEin all EXISTENCES*4
COMMENTS

*1 Clearly CITY and FIELD represent a spectrum of PLACES. One
is secure (City) and one is adventurous (Field)

*2 The verse says that ALL offspring (yours, your animals,
your fields..) will be blessed. This is therefore blessing
throughout all TIME and all generations

*3 The Torah blesses goods whether they are perishables or dry
and can be stored for a long time. Hence there is blessing
   in all circumstances

*4 All EXISTENCES are blessed: This world and the next world.
All EXISTENCES combines the ideas of PLACE, TIME, &
   CIRCUMSTANCE

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Please note that
 - there is nothing in the MEANING OF WORDS justifying this Rashi
 - there is nothing in the GRAMMAR OF WORDS justifying this Rashi
 - it is rather the STYLE OF THE PARAGRAPH that justifies Rashi

The rules of style require INTERPRETING the 4 verses of
blessing developmentally leading to a climax: The climax in
this case is the blessing of the next world

We emphasize that the SOLE reason Rashi interpreted the verse
this way is because of the rules of style requiring a CLIMACTIC
development. Furthermore since this is a Biblical rule of style
it must be considered the simple meaning of the text.

SHIN in a root letter means THAT

BACKGROUND
----------
We have explained numerous times that Rashi believed that
- Hebrew comes from 3 letter roots that are conjugated
- However the meaning of each 3 letter root can be derived
by breaking the 3 letter root into a 1 and 2 letter root
In todays posting we show that
------------------------------------
THE ROOT LETTER SHIN: means THAT
------------------------------------
just as the prefix letter SHIN means THAT

REFERENCES
----------
This 2 letter root theory was first expounded by Rashi
and later developed by Rabbi Hirsch. Further examples
can be found linked to http://www.Rashiyomi.Com/words.htm

THE TEXT
--------
Rashi explains the 3 words
- MISHAR = Dry goods
- SGR = Animal Births
- ShayGal = Stripper

THE LIST
--------
The LIST gives about a dozen examples of roots and the
derivation of their meaning. In deriving meaning we use
the assumption that SHIN means THAT. Some of the derivations
are obvious, others are punchy, while others may appear a
bit contrived. As usual we strive for a spectrum so that the
reader can form their own opinion.
ROOTMEANINGEXPLANATION OF MEANING USING: Shin=That
SGVLoftyTHAT (Shin) which is HIGH (Gvh) *1
SMTJostledTHAT (SHIN) which SHAKES (MOT) *1
SGLStripperTHOSE (SHIN) which UNCOVER(GLH) *2
STRPoliceTHOSE (SHIN) which keep in LINE (Tur) *2
SHALAskTHAT (shin) which will be TO ME (Elay)
SAARCity GateTHAT (Shin) which is by the CITY(IR)
SThKSilenceTHAT (SHIN) which is PIKED UP (Tka)*3
SFRElegantTHAT (Shin) which is FRUIT LIKE (Pri)
SHAYRDry GoodsTHAT (Shin) which is PLUCKED (Arh)
SCLClusterTHAT (SHIN) which is COMPLETE (Cll)*4
SGRBirthTHAT (Shin) which is (now a) SOJOURNER*5
COMMENTS

*1 In these examples the ROOT with and without SHIN mean almost
the same thing (E.g. GVH = SGV = HIGH)

*2 Some of these are in agreement with English Idioms.
e.g A STRIPPER is an UNCOVERER, a POLICEMAN keeps in LINE etc

*3 Like in English: Silence is symbolically depicted as stuffing
   (PIKING) the talkers mouth

*4 SCHOL means a GRAPE CLUSTER -- that is a grape branch THAT
IS (SHIN) COMPLETE IN GRAPHES (CLL)

*5 - Before birth: the animal was in the womb and secure
   - After birth: the animal is an alien or sojourner
Hence SGR refers to (ANIMAL) BIRTH.

VERSE: Dt21-10b

REPETITION JUSTIFIES 4 TYPES OF INFERENCES

BACKGROUND
----------
Dt20 and Dt21 speak about wars
- Dt20 speaks about OBLIGATORY religious wars
- Dt21 speaks about PERMISSIVE religious wars

REFERENCE
---------
* See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm which presents 4
types of inference that can be obtained from REPEATED WORDS.
* (See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h2n20.htm which also brings
numerous non-Rashi references from Baba Metzia 31)

THE TEXT
--------
Dt21-10b When you go to war ... And BOOT A BOOTY

THE RASHI
---------
REPETITION can indicate EVEN IN NON STANDARD CIRCUMSTANCES
Equivalantly it can indicate NON STANDARD MEANINGS of an object
This is METHOD 4 of dealing with REPEATED words

Here is the LIST for METHOD 4 from the URL .../doubl-14.htm
The complete set of examples and footnotes may be found there
The bottom entry on the list Dt21-10b is new
VERSETEXT OF VERSEMEANING OF REPETITION
Nu17-28aAll who come NEAR NEAR ...Even if it was crowded
Nu05-12aA MAN MAN who suspects his wifeEven a paranoic man*6
Ex15-01bGod is GREAT GREAT in war*7Overthrows HORSE& RIDER
Gn08-21bGod will not destroy not destroyNo matter how evil*8
Gn26-13a& Isaac GREW GREWEven his manure*9
Dt21-10b& BOOT a BOOTY*10Even a CANAANITE booty
COMMENTS

*6 In other words MAN MAN denotes ANY MAN even someone
very paranoic (The chapter deals with the suspected
wife ceremony. The verse informs us that God allows
us to Erase His Name even for a paranoic person)

*7 Ordinary military greatness consists
of overpowering the RIDER not the HORSE. But God throws
BOTH HORSE and RIDER in the sea. Thus the greatness
   is non-standard

*8 The implication is that God will never destroy the
world no matter how evil man becomes.

*9 GROWTH is usually associated with assets and workers
Rashi points out here that Isaac GREW IN ALL RESPECTS
   EVEN his manure was coveted.

*10 - Dt20 lays down the rules for OBLIGATORY wars(eg Canaanites)
    - Dt21 lays down the rules for PERMISSIVE wars
OBLIGATORY wars require killing everybody while PERMISSIVE
wars allow capture of captives. When these two rules
conflict, eg when a CANAANITE is CAPTURED while residing
in ANOTHER (non Canaan) country then we dont have to kill
him/her (We can BOOT (ANY) BOOTY).

=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------

Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
			   while DOING ITS WORK

RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================

=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
