VERSE: Ex08-05b
RASHIS COVERED: Ex08-05b Ex08-05a Ex23-05b
============================== Ex08-05b =======================
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis main goals is to explain grammar the same way
modern Hebrew Grammar textbooks explain grammar. We call
this the Rashi method of GRAMMAR.
When Rashi discusses how a sentence can be made interrogative
we speak about the Rashi submethod of the INTERROGATIVE
EXAMPLE
-------
- It is well known that a sentence indicates the interrogative
if the letter hey is prefixed to a keyword (usually the first)
in the sentence.
- In a similar manner a sentence beginning with the keyword
Caph-Yud, meaning PERHAPS, can also indicate the interrogative
even if there is no hey
EXAMPLE: Ex23-05b PERHAPS you will see the animals of your
enemy overloaden and not help him?
- A sentence following another sentence beginning with the
phrase ISNT IT ENOUGH indicates a question
EXAMMPLE: Gn30-15a ISNT IT ENOUGH you took my husband; You
want to take my mandrakes also?
- A sentence following a sentence beginning with the word
BEHOLD can indicate the interrogative
Ex08-22b BEHOLD if we offer offerings in front of Egypt, they
wont kill us?
LIST009b presents a list of QUESTION verses. LIST009c
summarizes the keywords by which questions are asked.
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment
of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these
almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or
even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT
When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost
identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING.
EXAMPLE Ex08-22a
----------------
Ex08-22 states
----------------------------------------------------------------
It is DISGUST OF EGYPT to offer to our God
If we offer DISGUST OF EGYPT they-ll kill us
----------------------------------------------------------------
Rashi infers that DISGUST OF EGYPT acquires the meaning of
OFFERING Thus the verse should read
----------------------------------------------------------------
It is DISGUST OF EGYPT to offer to our God
If we offer an OFFERING they-ll kill us
----------------------------------------------------------------
LIST343p summarizes this alignment

-------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ---------------------------
*10 Since the Hebrew word KI has 7 meanings we can inquire
if there is some way of recognizing when KI means PERHAPS
The answer seems to be that if the verse in question
-- has a contradiction
-- indicates a question
then the word KI should be interested as PERHAPS
Let us use this principle to examine the two verses
above.
Ex23-05 states
------------------------------------------------
KI you see the donkey of your enemy overburdened
and you will abstain from helping him
you should help him
------------------------------------------------
Notice the contradiction (DONT HELP vs HELP) this
suggests that the sentence is rhetorical
-------------------------------------------------------
WHEN you see an overburdened donkey YOU WONT HELP HIM?
-------------------------------------------------------
This in turn justifies interpreting KI as PERHAPS
-------------------------------------------------------
PERHAPS you see an overburdened donkey YOU WONT HELP HIM?
-------------------------------------------------------
The next verse is Gn50-19a. In addition to haveing the
Hebrew word KI it also has the hebrew letter HEY which
indicates a question. These TWO factors---KI + HEY--
justifies translating the KI as PERHAPS

NOTES
-----
*1 The whole text is as follows
--------------------------------
Isnt it enough you are levites?
You want priesthood?
This is what you fight about?
--------------------------------
*2 As indicated in the long footnote above to justify translating
the Hebrew KI as PERHAPS the verse must have
-- a contradiction indicating a rhetorical nature
-- the Hebrew HEY indicating a question
