VERSE: Ex08-17b

====================== Ex08-17b =================================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meanings
of words the same way a dictionary explains words. We
call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANINGS.

Rashi has 10 vehicles to explain meanings. One method
of explaining meaing is to use the GOOD EXAMPLE method.
For example BREAD is a GOOD EXAMPLE of FOOD and hence
BREAD can mean FOOD. Similarly HONEY can mean SWEET.
In literature this is known as METONOMY or SYNECHDOCHE
(naming a WHOLE by a PART).

EXAMPLE Ex08-17b

MIXTURE
----------------------------

Rashi (paraphrased) comments
-------------------------------
The word MIXTURE refers to
a MIXTURE of beasts---lions,
snakes, etc
-------------------------------

Thus Rashi uses the GOOD EXAMPLE method here; a MIXTURE
OF BEASTS is a good example of a MIXTURE

LIST850a summarizes several Biblical words named using
the GOOD EXAMPLE method.

---------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------

*10 Rashi additionally cites a long Midrash Tanchuma
on the reasons for the 10 commandments. The Midrash
advocates that God declared WAR on Egypt. War is
    declared through
    - cutting of water/food supplies (bloody Nile)
    - Proclamations to scare the people (Frogs)
    - Physical attack (Lice)

The MIXTURE was a second attack by LAND (since
the first 3 were an attack by water). THe HAIL
was a 3rd attack by AIR).

We will develop this at a later date. Rav Hirsch
follows this explanation in his commentary.
