VERSE: Ex12-03d
RASHIS COVERED: Ex12-03d Ex12-46b
======================= BAYIT means HOUSE/FAMILY/GROUP =========
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Ex12-03 talks about how Jews take lambs for the pascal lamb. The
verse(s) state
-- Speak to the Jews and let them take
-- a lamb to their FATHERS HOUSE
-- a lamb to their HOUSE
Note the 2 latter phrases which look redundant and complementary.
The Rabbi Ishmael rule of contradictory/complementary verses
allows resolving complementariness by using BROAD/LITERAL meaning
- Speak to the Jews..take a LAMB PER FAMILY (or if needed)
- a LAMB PER HOUSE (With many families per house)
---------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: RABBI ISHMAEL
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: BROAD-LITERAL
---------------------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
Some Rashis focus either on Dictionary meaning or grammar. But
many Rashis explore relationship between verses that either
contradict each other or complement each other. The Rabbi Ishmael
rule of Contradictory/complementary verses explores 5 methods
of resolving verse pairs. One such method suggests resolving
complementary verses by using RESTRICTIVE vs BROAD MEANINGS.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Ex12-03 states that Jews should take
-- a lamb for each fathers house
-- a lamb for each house
The Rabbi Ishmael rule utilizes the fact that the word house
can be literal (HOUSE) or can broadly mean any FAMILY/GROUP.
Hence we read the verses as follows
-- EACH FAMILY TAKES A LAMB (or if there is too much meat)
-- EACH HOUSE takes a lamb(Or if there will be leftover)
-- A HOUSE & ITS NEARBY NEIGHBOR take a lamb)

NOTES
-----
*1 Gn02-25a says ADAM/EVE werent EMBARASSED by their nakedness
Gn03-07b says ADAM/EVE became AWARE of their vulnerability
Thus Rashi interprets the word KNOW in Gn03-07b as AWARE
This is a BROAD interpretation.
Similarly Rashi interprets ADAM/EVE EYES OPENED as meaning
BECOME AWARE (Gn03-07a *10)
Similarly Rashi interprets Gn03-11a as a reprimand by God
for sinning and consequently becoming aware of their
vulnerability and capacity for sin.
Another approach (instead of using contradictory verses)
is to use word nuances. In general KNOW in the Bible means
FAMILIAR. *11
The above interpretation in terms of vulnerability is
consistent with the assertion that the snake saw Eve
naked and wanted Adam dead so he could marry her*13
*2 Thus the word FOREVER is interpreted broadly
instead of literally--FOREVER means A LONG TIME
*3 Thus the word PRIEST is interpreted BROADLY to refer to
the ROTATION OF THAT PRIEST
*4 YOUNG ADULT is interpreted as BEGINNING ADULTHOOD.
Thus YOUNG broadly refers to YOUNG ADULTHOOD
Similarly ADULT broadly refers to BEGINNING ADULTHOOD
*5 The word HOUSE is used TWICE in this ONE Verse.
- The first occurence is interpreted broadly- FAMILY
- the 2nd occurence is interpreted literally- HOUSE
The entire text-Ex12-03:04 then smoothly reads as folows
-------------------------------------------------
Tell the Jews to take ONE LAMB either
a) Per FAMILY (and if there will be leftover meat then)
b) Per HOUSE (and if there will be leftover meat then)
c) PER HOUSE & NEARBY NEIGHBOR
-------------------------------------------------
The consequent of interpretation of Ex12-46b may
be found in Footnote *14
------------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------
*10 cf
- Isa42-20 OPEN EARS
- 2K07-17 God Open his eyes(and make him understand)
In both these verses the Hebrew root P-K-Ch
means TO UNDERSTAND
*11 See http://www.RashiYomi.com/know-5.htm
*12 In defense of this contribution of mine I point out that
Adam was a Prophet. We have never heard that prophecy
comes to naked people and such an assertion seems
irreverant and contradictory to prophetic holiness.
Thus I interpret NAKED as ADULT FLIRTING where one has
a heighted awareness of ones physical self. Such an
interpretation is consistent with the Talmudic observation
that MARITAL HAPPINESS only happens to the thoroughly
righteous and thoroughly wicked (but not to those
inbetween).
*13 The following two postings justify this assertion using
grammatical means
http://www.RashiYomi.com/ex24-01a.htm
http://www.RashiYomi.com/cp-9.htm
*14 Ex12-46 states about the Passover lamb
---------------------------------
Eat it in ONE HOUSE...
Dont take food out of the HOUSE
---------------------------------
But we have just seen in Ex12-03:04 that two NEARBY
NEIGHBORS can eat from the Pascal lamb. Indeed it says
-------------------------------------------------
Tell the Jews to take ONE LAMB either
a) Per FAMILY (and if there will be leftover meat then)
b) Per HOUSE (and if there will be leftover meat then)
c) PER HOUSE & NEARBY NEIGHBOR
-------------------------------------------------
Consequently it seems reasonable NOT to interpret HOUSE
literally here but to interpret it as GROUP. That is
after a GROUP has been assigned to a Pascal lamb then
---------------------------------
Eat the Pascal lamb in ONE GROUP...
Dont take food out of the GROUP...
---------------------------------
In other words, it is prohibited, once a group is assigned
to a Pascal lamb, to further split up into two groups.
Again: The URL for the multiple meanings of HOUSE is
http://www.RashiYomi.com/gn45-02a.htm
Family/group/headquarters/employee staff are all reasonable
meanings of BAYIT(as can be seen in this URL)
A further defense of interpreting BAYIT as GROUP comes
from the PRONOUN RULE: This rule states that is a NOUN
is repeated (Without using a pronoun) then we give it
a broad interpretation. Since Ex12-46 repeats the
word HOUSE (without using a pronoun) we therefore are
justified in interpreting HOUSE as meaning GROUP.
For a discussion of rules governing repeated words see
http://www.RashiYomi.com/doubl-14.htm.
On a final note we observe that Rashi did not cite
Ex12-03:04 to justify that HOUSE means GROUP in Ex12-46
Instead Rashi cites a verse --- ON THE houseS IN WHICH
THE LAMB WAS EATEN --- to prove that the Pascal lamb
can be eaten in multiple houses.
I would respond by simply stating that I have provided
two ADDITIONAL supports (Ex12-03:04 and the use
of the REPEATED NOUNS)
