4 Meanings of BAYIT

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Hebrew word BAYIT means HOUSE. Hence it also refers
to the HOUSEHOLD (The Family GROUP). It also refers to
INSIDE (vs OUTSIDE) and can refer to any CLASP or HOLDER
which HOUSES something. Here are some sample verses
- Lv14-41b The HOUSE should be scraped INSIDE
- Gn45-02a Pharohs HOUSEHOLD heard the Joes brothers came
- Gn45-16a The news in Pharohs HOUSE was the brothers arrival
- Ex25-27a The table rings will be CLASPS for the carry-logs
- Ex01-21a God rewarded them & made them into a known FAMILY

TODAYS RASHI RULE: WORD MEANINGS
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: UNIFIED MEANING
-----------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
One of Rashis tasks is to explain the meaning of words the
same way the dictionary explains words. Sometimes Rashi simply
gives the meaning of an unknown word. However at other times
Rashi will show a unifying theme to several disparate meanings
of a single Hebrew root. In these verses, Rashi is performing
the same task that the Great Grammarian--the Radack--performed
in his Encylopoedic work--ROOTS, in which Radack lists, for each
Biblical root, all relevant Biblical meanings. It is frequently
instructive to compare Rashi and Radack in these instances.

STANDARD EXAMPLE OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
-------------------------------------
Todays posting can serve as a good example. The Hebrew word
BAYIT primarily means HOUSE.

The house is a GOOD EXAMPLE of a group of people--the household
-- that group together. Hence HOUSE can refer to HOUSEHOLD or
more generally to any group.

The HOUSE encloses and holds people in. Hence HOUSE can refer
to anything with the same FORM as a house such as a CLASP or
RING HOLDER

The House separates the INSIDE of the house from the OUTSIDE.
Hence HOUSE can refer to INSIDE.

Examples of verses with these meanings is presented below.
The about methods of naming items--good example, form etc--
are also presented in lists below.

COMMENTS

*1 In these footnotes we explore WHEN/WHY Rashi comments. Rashi
will frequently comment when ONE verse uses SEVERAL meanings
to the SAME ROOT. Rashi will frequently comment in such
situtations in order to avoid the potential confusion.

Lv14-41b uses TWO meanings for BAYIT: HOUSE and INSIDE

*2 Note the varied usages here
   - GROUP
   - STAFF
   - HEADQUARRTERS
   - FAMILY
   - HOUSEHOLD
   - CITY

It is hard to pinpoint one meaning. The common idea seems
to be CONNECTED GROUP OF PEOPLE.

*3 In these footnotes we explore WHEN/WHY Rashi comments. Rashi
will frequently comment when ONE verse uses SEVERAL meanings
to the SAME ROOT. Rashi will frequently comment in such
situtations in order to avoid the potential confusion.

EX25-27 uses THREE meanings of the same ONE WORD (LAMED)

The Hebrew prefix letter LAMED has 3 distinct
meanings in this verse. Lamed can mean both
   - OPPOSITE
   - GOAL/PURPOSE
   - FOR.
   Hence Rashi translates the verse

   ------------------------------------
The table rings will be OPPOSITE(Ex25-27a)
the table rim; They (The table rings)
   will serve FOR(Ex25-27b) clasps
FOR (Ex25-27c) the table carrying logs
   ------------------------------------

*4 In these footnotes we explore WHEN/WHY Rashi comments. Rashi
will frequently comment when ONE Chapter uses SEVERAL meanings
to the SAME ROOT. Rashi will frequently comment in such
situtations in order to avoid the potential confusion.

This Chapter(Gn45) uses TWO meanings of the same ONE WORD-
   BAYIT.

Concerning the news that Josephs brothers
came we see that the Hebrew BAYIT can
   alternately mean HOUSE or HOUSEHOLD

   ---------------------------------------
   Gn45-02a Pharohs HOUSEHOLD heard
Gn45-16a The news was heard in Pharohs HOUSE
   ---------------------------------------

*5 The actual sin of Peor happened in a place
   named SHITTIM(Nu25-01)

The actual idol is called the MASTERS OF
   PEOR

Hence the phrase THE HOUSE OF PEOR does
   not refer to
   - the name of the PLACE
   - the name of the IDOL
But instead must refer to the
   - idol HEADQUARTERS.

*6 Rashi points out that the word IN is missing in this verse
   The verse should read

   -------------------------------------------------------
The news [IN] Pharohs house was that Josephs brothers
   had arrived
   -------------------------------------------------------

Such missing PREPOSITIONS are called ELLIPSIS and are common
in the Bible. See the examples in posting Nu30-11a for
   examples (http://www.Rashiyomi.com/nu30-11a.htm

*7 We present here the bottom line meaning of the verse.
However a more comprehensive approach shows that the
identification of the particular meaning of BAYIT needed
is inferred from the Rabbi Ishmael rule of CONTRADICTORY
   verses. Please see http://www.RashiYomi.com/ex12-03d.htm
   for complete details.

GOOD-EXAMPLE NAMING METHOD

In this posting we review many words whose meaning comes from
a GOOD EXAMPLE. For instance,HONEY restrictively only refers
to HONEY; but more broadly it acquires a new meaning of
SWEETNESS since HONEY is a GOOD EXAMPLE of sweetness.

In a similar way the HOUSE is a good example of a UNIFIED
GROUP such as a FAMILY, HEADQUARTERS or STAFF OF EMPLOYEES

This group of examples comes from url
http://www.RashiYomi.com/naming-8.htm
The example of house is at the bottom

FORM METHOD OF NAMING

One method of naming objects is by the FORM--for example the
PENTAGON building is named by its FORM--it looks like a pentagon
(By contrast the UN building is named by its FUNCTION--to unite
all nations).

Hence, BAYIT--house--can also mean INSIDE or HOLDER since
the CLASP/HOLDER HOUSES the object INSIDE. The following list
comes from URL http://www.RashiYomi.com/naming-8.htm

The new examples--HOUSE-IN, HOUSE-CLASP--are on bottom:

*1 Note that the same etymology---the clasp HOUSES the jewel--
occurs in BOTH English and Hebrew

MISSING WORDS

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is the explanation of Grammar the
same way modern Grammar textbooks explain it. In this posting
Rashi explores verses whose explanation is facilitated by filling
in missing words or letters. In the following verses the BRACKETED
words [] are missing in the original verse--however placing them
in facilitates understanding

BRIEF SUMMARY OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
----------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain grammar the same
way modern Hebrew books explain Grammar. Grammar includes such
areas as the rules governing
-- conjugation of verbs
-- agreement on gender and plurality
-- use of connective words like the prepositions IN,FOR,FROM...
-- filling in missing words of sentences

BAYIT means HOUSE/FAMILY/GROUP

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Ex12-03 talks about how Jews take lambs for the pascal lamb. The
verse(s) state
-- Speak to the Jews and let them take
-- a lamb to their FATHERS HOUSE
-- a lamb to their HOUSE
Note the 2 latter phrases which look redundant and complementary.
The Rabbi Ishmael rule of contradictory/complementary verses
allows resolving complementariness by using BROAD/LITERAL meaning
- Speak to the Jews..take a LAMB PER FAMILY (or if needed)
- a LAMB PER HOUSE (With many families per house)

---------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: RABBI ISHMAEL
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: BROAD-LITERAL
---------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
Some Rashis focus either on Dictionary meaning or grammar. But
many Rashis explore relationship between verses that either
contradict each other or complement each other. The Rabbi Ishmael
rule of Contradictory/complementary verses explores 5 methods
of resolving verse pairs. One such method suggests resolving
complementary verses by using RESTRICTIVE vs BROAD MEANINGS.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Ex12-03 states that Jews should take
-- a lamb for each fathers house
-- a lamb for each house

The Rabbi Ishmael rule utilizes the fact that the word house
can be literal (HOUSE) or can broadly mean any FAMILY/GROUP.
Hence we read the verses as follows

-- EACH FAMILY TAKES A LAMB (or if there is too much meat)
-- EACH HOUSE takes a lamb(Or if there will be leftover)
-- A HOUSE & ITS NEARBY NEIGHBOR take a lamb)

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We give several examples of resolving contradiction by using
BROAD LITERAL MEANINGS. The footnotes explore implications
for related verses
VERSE1VERSE2COMBINED UNIFIED TEXT OF VERSES
Gn02-25Gn03-07Adam &Eve were UNAWARE OF VULNERABILITY of sin*1
Dt15-17Lv25-10Slaves work FOREVER=A LONG TIME=TILL JUBILEE*2

Lv04-03Lv04-03A Young ADULT Bullock = BEGINNING ADULTHOOD*4
Ex12-03Ex12-031 lamb either a)PER FAMILY or b)PER HOUSE*5
COMMENTS

*1 Gn02-25a says ADAM/EVE werent EMBARASSED by their nakedness
Gn03-07b says ADAM/EVE became AWARE of their vulnerability

Thus Rashi interprets the word KNOW in Gn03-07b as AWARE
   This is a BROAD interpretation.

Similarly Rashi interprets ADAM/EVE EYES OPENED as meaning
   BECOME AWARE (Gn03-07a *10)

Similarly Rashi interprets Gn03-11a as a reprimand by God
for sinning and consequently becoming aware of their
   vulnerability and capacity for sin.

Another approach (instead of using contradictory verses)
is to use word nuances. In general KNOW in the Bible means
   FAMILIAR. *11

The above interpretation in terms of vulnerability is
consistent with the assertion that the snake saw Eve
naked and wanted Adam dead so he could marry her*13

*2 Thus the word FOREVER is interpreted broadly
instead of literally--FOREVER means A LONG TIME

*3 Thus the word PRIEST is interpreted BROADLY to refer to
   the ROTATION OF THAT PRIEST

*4 YOUNG ADULT is interpreted as BEGINNING ADULTHOOD.
Thus YOUNG broadly refers to YOUNG ADULTHOOD
Similarly ADULT broadly refers to BEGINNING ADULTHOOD

*5 The word HOUSE is used TWICE in this ONE Verse.
   - The first occurence is interpreted broadly- FAMILY
   - the 2nd occurence is interpreted literally- HOUSE

The entire text-Ex12-03:04 then smoothly reads as folows
   -------------------------------------------------
Tell the Jews to take ONE LAMB either
   a) Per FAMILY (and if there will be leftover meat then)
   b) Per HOUSE (and if there will be leftover meat then)
   c) PER HOUSE & NEARBY NEIGHBOR
   -------------------------------------------------

The consequent of interpretation of Ex12-46b may
   be found in Footnote *14

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 cf
    - Isa42-20 OPEN EARS
    - 2K07-17 God Open his eyes(and make him understand)

In both these verses the Hebrew root P-K-Ch
    means TO UNDERSTAND

*11 See http://www.RashiYomi.com/know-5.htm

*12 In defense of this contribution of mine I point out that
Adam was a Prophet. We have never heard that prophecy
comes to naked people and such an assertion seems
irreverant and contradictory to prophetic holiness.
Thus I interpret NAKED as ADULT FLIRTING where one has
a heighted awareness of ones physical self. Such an
interpretation is consistent with the Talmudic observation
that MARITAL HAPPINESS only happens to the thoroughly
righteous and thoroughly wicked (but not to those
    inbetween).

*13 The following two postings justify this assertion using
    grammatical means

    http://www.RashiYomi.com/ex24-01a.htm
    http://www.RashiYomi.com/cp-9.htm

*14 Ex12-46 states about the Passover lamb
    ---------------------------------
    Eat it in ONE HOUSE...
Dont take food out of the HOUSE
    ---------------------------------

But we have just seen in Ex12-03:04 that two NEARBY
NEIGHBORS can eat from the Pascal lamb. Indeed it says
   -------------------------------------------------
Tell the Jews to take ONE LAMB either
   a) Per FAMILY (and if there will be leftover meat then)
   b) Per HOUSE (and if there will be leftover meat then)
   c) PER HOUSE & NEARBY NEIGHBOR
   -------------------------------------------------

Consequently it seems reasonable NOT to interpret HOUSE
literally here but to interpret it as GROUP. That is
after a GROUP has been assigned to a Pascal lamb then
    ---------------------------------
Eat the Pascal lamb in ONE GROUP...
Dont take food out of the GROUP...
    ---------------------------------

In other words, it is prohibited, once a group is assigned
to a Pascal lamb, to further split up into two groups.

Again: The URL for the multiple meanings of HOUSE is
    http://www.RashiYomi.com/gn45-02a.htm

    Family/group/headquarters/employee staff are all reasonable
meanings of BAYIT(as can be seen in this URL)

A further defense of interpreting BAYIT as GROUP comes
from the PRONOUN RULE: This rule states that is a NOUN
is repeated (Without using a pronoun) then we give it
a broad interpretation. Since Ex12-46 repeats the
word HOUSE (without using a pronoun) we therefore are
justified in interpreting HOUSE as meaning GROUP.

For a discussion of rules governing repeated words see
    http://www.RashiYomi.com/doubl-14.htm.

On a final note we observe that Rashi did not cite
Ex12-03:04 to justify that HOUSE means GROUP in Ex12-46
Instead Rashi cites a verse --- ON THE houseS IN WHICH
THE LAMB WAS EATEN --- to prove that the Pascal lamb
can be eaten in multiple houses.

I would respond by simply stating that I have provided
two ADDITIONAL supports (Ex12-03:04 and the use
    of the REPEATED NOUNS)

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols
