SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS-
REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding
FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this
the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the
OTHER VERSE method.
If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we
call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION.
If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of
some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD
of MEANING.
If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if
no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD
of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms
the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to
the first verse
EXAMPLES 1
----------
In Ex15-16b Moses curses
-------------------------
May fear fall upon them
-------------------------
This is confirmed in the REFERENCE Jo02-10
discussing the reaction of the Canaanites
to the Jewish exodus
------------------------------------
For fear has fallen upon us
------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 2: Ex16-29a
-------------------
In Ex16-29a Moses says
--------------------------
See God gives you bread twice
--------------------------
The 2-fold bread happened on Friday in
honor of the Shabbath This is confirmed
in the REFERENCE Ex16-22
----------------------------------------
On Friday they went out and found TWICE
the Manna
----------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 3: Ex18-08b
-------------------
Ex18-08b states
--------------------------------
Jethro, Moses Father in law
heard ALL THE MIRACLES that
had happened to the Jews
--------------------------------
This obviously REFERENCES Ex15,Ex16,Ex17
which speaks about
- The Exodus from Egypt
- The splitting of the Red Sea
- The miracle of the manna
- The defeat of Amalayk
Interestingly Rashi only mentions some of
these miracles, not all four. This omission
has generated much commentary from Rashi
commentators. We suffice with showing that
the driving force behind Rashi is the REFERENCE
EXAMPLE 4: Ex19-13c
--------------------
Ex19-13c speaking about the revelation
on Mount Sinai during which time
the people were prohibited to go up
the mountain states
-------------------------------------
When the people hear a long shofar
blast they can go up on the mountain
--------------------------------------
Although Rashi does NOT EXPLICITLY
connect it we think it proper to
relate this verse to the REFERENCE
Nu10 which speaks about LONG BLASTS
being heralds of NEW MOVES. Rashi literally
simply states
----------------------------------------
When there is a LONG blast -- this is a
SIGN of the departure of the Divine presence
and they can go up
----------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 5: Ex22-03c
-------------------
Ex22-03, Ex22-06 and Ex22-08 all deal with law suits
Here is a brief synopsis
-------------------------------------------------
ISSUE EXAMPLES BROUGHT
---------------------- --------------------------
Theft Ox, Donkey, Sheep
Negligent Guard Money, Utensils
Negligent Guard Ox, Donkey,sheep,garment
-------------------------------------------------
Rashi's comment is
---------------------------------------------
Notice how the cases are all mixed up and overlapping
We infer that any type of law suit for property
invovles MOVABLES OF WORTH (but not land, or
documents)
----------------------------------------------
It is arguable that this is not an example of
REFERENCE since all the verses are in close
proximity but rather an example of STYLE. Nevertheless
we have included this example with the REFERENCE
methods.

LIST210t summarizes the above examples, provides

NOTES
-----
*1
Note: Rashi uses exaggeration techniques: He assumed Jacob took
an OATH---this is reasonable - (After all Moses fled from Egypt
and wanted to go back and Jethro wanted to protect his daughters
from Moses' social obligations). However this is not necessary
It is only necessary to assume that Moses had an "understanding"
with his father-in-law that he would not go back. Hence when God
ordered him Moses was polite and asked permission.
*2 Rashi only mentions some of the miracles that had happened
This has inspired Rashi commentators to see significance
in the omissions. I am not taking sides -- just pointing
out that the BASIS for the Rashi comment is the REFERENCE
*3 Rashi's point is that Ex22-03,Ex22-06,Ex22-08 together
refer to the same case dealing with either UTENSILS,
ANIMALS, or GARMENTS.*10
----------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES -------------------
*10 Ex22-03, Ex22-06, Ex22-08 bring 3 cases each
with different examples.
-------------------------------------------------
ISSUE EXAMPLES BROUGHT
---------------------- --------------------------
Theft Ox, Donkey, Sheep
Negligent Guard Money, Utensils
Negligent Guard Ox, Donkey,sheep,garment
-------------------------------------------------
From the overlap Rashi infers that all the cases
all refer to any MOVABLE ITEM OF WORTH.
