VERSE: Ex23-12d
RULE: (a) The phrase "SOJOURNER IN YOUR GATES" refers to
a righteous gentile (b) The phrase "SOJOURNER" refers to a convert
There are only 5 verses in the Bible where it has the phrase
SOJOURNER IN YOUR GATES
EXAMPLES
--------
(1) Dt24-14e Don't oppress (non jewish) workers (either)
(2) Dt14-21a Give non kosher meat to the non jews in your midst
(3) Ex23-12d It says regarding Sabbath that BOTH the
SOJOURNER ("Ex20-10") and the SOJOURNER IN YOUR MIDST("Dt05-14")
should rest on the Sabbath (Hence one of these verses refers
to a Convert while the other refers to a righteous non jew*1
(4) Dt31-12 Requirement to hear the reading of the Law every
7 years.*2
NOTES
-----
*1 My opinion is that a typo in the Mechilta crisscrossed the
references. The proper references are SOJOURNER=CONVERT
and SOJOURNER IN YOUR MIDST=RIGHTEOUS NON JEW (This
correspondence is consistent with the rest of the cases)
*2 I could find no explicit source on this. Based on an obscure
Rambam Chagigah 3:6 I suggest that besides the 7 noachide laws
there is an 8th noachide law "respect for prophecy" which is
explicitly mentioned in Dt31-12. Apparently non jews are obligated
on this also (Otherwise how could they be liable to observe their
7 commandments)
