====================== THE TEMPLE MATERIALS =====================

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex25-03:07 lists the 16 (*10) items given in voluntary donation
for the building of temple.

THE TEXT
--------
For example people brought [GOLD, SILVER...WOOD etc]

THE RASHI
---------
For several items brought, Rashi CROSS REFERENCES other verses
to show HOW they were used. For example, there was a REQUIRED
TAX of silver half dollars (Nu30-11:16) which was used to make
the SILVER SOCKETS and SILVER CLASPS (Ex37-27:28). Rashi explains
that the other silver--brought by VOLUNTARY DONATION--was used to
make SILVER UTENSILS (e.g. See Nu07-01).

THE LIST
--------
Here is the LIST of items and cross references. Rashi is using
here the METHOD OF OTHER VERSES.

NOTES
------
*1 The verses in this column BEGIN the paragraph describing the
temple item using the material column 2. The actual verse
explicitly mentioning this item may occur later in the
   paragraph.

*2 These cross references are EXPLICITLY mentioned in the Rashis
   at Ex25-03a Ex25-06a Ex25-06b Ex25-06c Ex25-07a Ex25-07b
   Ex25-07c.*11 *12

*3 The verse says
   -------------------------------------
Blue, Purple, Crimson, flax and Goats
   -------------------------------------

Rashi (Ex25-04d Ex26-07a) citing the Aramaic
   translation says that
   ------------------------------------------------------------
GOATS does not refer to GOAT SKIN but WOVEN GOAT HAIR FABRIC
   ------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi derived this from an OTHER VERSE, Ex25-36 which
   explicitly states
   --------------------------------------------------------
And those women with superior skills WOVE THE GOATS*13
   --------------------------------------------------------

------------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES ---------------------

*10 Actually a very obscure phrase in Rashi says there were
13 items. This drives all the Rashi commentators crazy.

However the purpose of this list is NOT to defend every
word and phrase in Rashi. Rather the purpose of this list
is to make all Rashis plausible, simple and grammatically
based. Rashi here is using the principle of OTHER VERSES.
This one guiding principle, OTHER VERSES, is what explains
all the Rashis which cross reference verses where these
donated items were used. The particular phraseology that
Rashi used is not of primary interest to us (But if
anyone knows a good explanation please email it in)

*11 Notice on Ex25-07 how it does not say
   ------------------------------------------------------------
SHOAM for the AYFOD and JEWEL FITTING STONES for the CHOSHEN
   ------------------------------------------------------------

   but rather says
   ---------------------------------------------------------
SHOAM and JEWEL FITTING STONES for the AYFOD and CHOSHEN
   ---------------------------------------------------------
By using the cross reference Rashi breaks the couplings
and links SHOAM STONES to the AYFOD and JEWEL FITTING STONES
   to the CHOSHEN

*12 Rashi uses here WORKBOOK METHODS. That is of the 16 items
he only CROSS REFERENCES some of them. He lets the student
(you!) find the remaining cross references.

*13 Rashi notes the strange ALIGNMENT of Ex35-25 and Ex35-26
    --------------------------------------------------------
Ex35-25 every SMART woman wove with her hands...the wool...
Ex35-26 every ESPECIALLY SMART woman wove the GOATS
    --------------------------------------------------------

The repeated verse as well as the alignment shows that
    two separate skills were involved
    - the ordinary skill of weaving wool
    - the special skill of weaving Goats hair (Ex25-26a)

The Talmud in Shabbath explains that the weaving was done
    live off the goats.

Another Sefer I have, explains that Goat hair was thicker
than wool and requires a special skill to weave since it
is easier to weave thin threads (The book is THE MISHKAN &THE
HOLY GARMENTS by Rabbi Steinberg, loaned to me by the
family that I lained for last year)
