VERSE: v8-2-7a

ANSWER: To question as to whether Rav Hirsch was a SOURCE man
------ or an original thinker

Note carefully that Rav Hirsch never says anything without
first citing (usually) several dozen sources.

Only then does Rav Hirsch possibly give a unifying theme
to these sources.

So for example Rav Hirsch might cite the Radack that AMN means
- sculpturor
- nursemaid
- cancerous diseases
- faith

And only then point out that AMN does not just mean CREATION
OF A SCULPTURE but rather INTENSE AND WHOLISTIC creation the
emphasis being not on the ACT of creation but on the INTENSITY
of the creation.

FOr example, the scuplturor creates the WHOLE statute.
Similarly the nursemaid doesnt just help the child but gives
the child everything. Similarly cancer does not just invade
the body but totally overtakes the cell.

So too, FAITH, is not a mere BELIEF in God but a total surrender
of the totality of ones being to God who then molds it.

I conclude that Rav Hirsch was similar to e.g. Rav Chaiim
Brisker. Rav Hirsch always cited sources and then gave
unifying reasons or distinctions. As such he is as much a
SOURCE MAN as the Mishnah Brurah or Aruch Hashulchan

VERSE: Ex25-05a

MeADAM=DIED RED; ADooM=NATUARLLY RED

BACKGROUND
----------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to indicate Grammatical conjugation
Rashi pays particular emphasis on rare grammatical conjugations
that might be overlooked.

REFERENCES
----------
The 6 Rashi goals: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/rules-01.htm

THE PARTICIPLE FORM
-------------------
When you want to indicate that an object has an attribute
you use the PARTICIPLE form which is typically characterized
by an O-O sound (SHOROOK).

THE LIST
--------
The LIST below gives typical examples. Thus GNAV means to STEAL
while GANOOV means STOLEN.*1

THE RASHI
---------
Ah--we now understand Rashi on Ex25-05a. The Hebrew form
is MeADaMiM which does not occur in ANY conjugation list.

For example Al Silberman in his Grammatical Form Konkordance
Form, 1463, points out THIS IS AN ABNORMAL CONJUGATION.
I would suggest that it is a HAFAL form (With the punctuation
of the first two letters switched)*2.

Is01-18 shows the CAUSATIVE HIFIL FORM--[If your sins are
REDDENED then we will WHITEN them]. Hence Ex25-05 would be
the HAFAL, or PASSIVE CAUSATIVE form and would refer to
skins that are DIED RED.

In fact this is Rashis point. The participle ADOOM refers
to an object that is NATURALLY red (eg Nu19-02) while
MeADAM refers to an object that is DIED red!

Here is the list *13

Is22-18BDRTo bundle*12CaDoorBall(Bundled object)

COMMENTS

*1 Some of these forms apply to NOUNS while others apply to
adjectives. My point is that the SHOROOK sound indicates
   an ATTRIBUTE*10

*2 Al suggests that MeADAM is a rare PUAL form and should be
   MeOODamim (as Isa9-15). *11

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 All these forms occur in standard references. E.g. see
the appendix to the Ibn Shoshan Dictionary, Volume 5
Nouns Forms 65,66,67 Adjective Forms 20,22

*11 Both Al and my suggestion require several changes.

Al changes the SHVA of the ALEPH to SHOROOK
AL changes the DALET to a Doubled letter(Dagesh chazak)
    Thus MeADAM becomes MeOODam

I change the SHVA of MEM to a KAMATZ
I change the KAMATZ KOTON of Aleph to a KAMATZ
I remove the DOUBLING of the Dalet
    Thus MaADaM becomes MeADaM

Semantically however my suggestion is consistent with
the nuance of DIEING RED vs NATURALLY RED and is
    therefore preferred

*12 There is no verb CADOOR to bundle, in Tenach. Rather
only the NOUN form, CADOOR ball appears.

The reader may hold this and the above list is still
valid. It shows that the PARTICIPLE FORM characterized
by a SHOROOK (OO sound) is used to indicate an ATTRIBUTE

Nevertheless it would seem reasonable that the etymology
of KADOOR is KA(like) a BONFIRE (DOOR) and would refer
to the ACT of BUNDLING a collection of logs together.
The noun form BALL would then refer to something
    BUNDLED UP

The actual word Ball only occurs twice in the Bible
and in each case one can HEAR the pun(BALL-BUNDLE).
  ------------------------------------------------------
Is22-18 God will BUNDLE you like a bundled BALL on open ground
Is29-03 God will CAMP AGAINST you LIKE a BALL (of BONFIRE)
  ------------------------------------------------------

I am indebted to my High School Tenach teacher, Rabbi Amnon
Haramati for pointing out to us Isiahs skillful use of Puns.
(However like a good student I will have to take full
  responsibility for this one)

*13 Note that this Rashi appears GRAMMATICAL SOUND AND MATURE
It does not appear Midrashic or far-fetched.

But Rashi here is focusing on minutae(ADOOM vs MeADAM)
Why then does Rashi appear sound? Because it can be
    defended by a grammatical database.

In a similar mannar the goal of this whole Rashi project
is to defend all Rashis by databases. Thus in a certain
sense this Rashi is the archetype of what we are doing
    on this list

THE TEMPLE MATERIALS

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex25-03:07 lists the 16 (*10) items given in voluntary donation
for the building of temple.

THE TEXT
--------
For example people brought [GOLD, SILVER...WOOD etc]

THE RASHI
---------
For several items brought, Rashi CROSS REFERENCES other verses
to show HOW they were used. For example, there was a REQUIRED
TAX of silver half dollars (Nu30-11:16) which was used to make
the SILVER SOCKETS and SILVER CLASPS (Ex37-27:28). Rashi explains
that the other silver--brought by VOLUNTARY DONATION--was used to
make SILVER UTENSILS (e.g. See Nu07-01).

THE LIST
--------
Here is the LIST of items and cross references. Rashi is using
here the METHOD OF OTHER VERSES.

COMMENTS

*1 The verses in this column BEGIN the paragraph describing the
temple item using the material column 2. The actual verse
explicitly mentioning this item may occur later in the
   paragraph.

*2 These cross references are EXPLICITLY mentioned in the Rashis
   at Ex25-03a Ex25-06a Ex25-06b Ex25-06c Ex25-07a Ex25-07b
   Ex25-07c.*11 *12

*3 The verse says
   -------------------------------------
Blue, Purple, Crimson, flax and Goats
   -------------------------------------

Rashi (Ex25-04d Ex26-07a) citing the Aramaic
   translation says that
   ------------------------------------------------------------
GOATS does not refer to GOAT SKIN but WOVEN GOAT HAIR FABRIC
   ------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi derived this from an OTHER VERSE, Ex25-36 which
   explicitly states
   --------------------------------------------------------
And those women with superior skills WOVE THE GOATS*13
   --------------------------------------------------------

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Actually a very obscure phrase in Rashi says there were
13 items. This drives all the Rashi commentators crazy.

However the purpose of this list is NOT to defend every
word and phrase in Rashi. Rather the purpose of this list
is to make all Rashis plausible, simple and grammatically
based. Rashi here is using the principle of OTHER VERSES.
This one guiding principle, OTHER VERSES, is what explains
all the Rashis which cross reference verses where these
donated items were used. The particular phraseology that
Rashi used is not of primary interest to us (But if
anyone knows a good explanation please email it in)

*11 Notice on Ex25-07 how it does not say
   ------------------------------------------------------------
SHOAM for the AYFOD and JEWEL FITTING STONES for the CHOSHEN
   ------------------------------------------------------------

   but rather says
   ---------------------------------------------------------
SHOAM and JEWEL FITTING STONES for the AYFOD and CHOSHEN
   ---------------------------------------------------------
By using the cross reference Rashi breaks the couplings
and links SHOAM STONES to the AYFOD and JEWEL FITTING STONES
   to the CHOSHEN

*12 Rashi uses here WORKBOOK METHODS. That is of the 16 items
he only CROSS REFERENCES some of them. He lets the student
(you!) find the remaining cross references.

*13 Rashi notes the strange ALIGNMENT of Ex35-25 and Ex35-26
    --------------------------------------------------------
Ex35-25 every SMART woman wove with her hands...the wool...
Ex35-26 every ESPECIALLY SMART woman wove the GOATS
    --------------------------------------------------------

The repeated verse as well as the alignment shows that
    two separate skills were involved
    - the ordinary skill of weaving wool
    - the special skill of weaving Goats hair (Ex25-26a)

The Talmud in Shabbath explains that the weaving was done
    live off the goats.

Another Sefer I have, explains that Goat hair was thicker
than wool and requires a special skill to weave since it
is easier to weave thin threads (The book is THE MISHKAN &THE
HOLY GARMENTS by Rabbi Steinberg, loaned to me by the
family that I lained for last year)
