VERSE: Ex30-34a
RASHIS COVERED: Ex30-34a Ex30-34b Ex30-34c Ex30-34d Ex30-34e
==================== Ex30-34a ================================
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The WORD MEANING method seeks to explain dictionary meaning.
Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. Words can be named
by EIGHT METHODS including naming by FORM, FUNCTION and FEEL.
For example both the UNITED NATIONS and PENTAGON are
organizations which protect. However the PENTAGON is named
by its FORM while the UNITED NATIONS is named by its FUNCTION
and GOAL (To unite nations).
EXAMPLE Ex30-34a Ex30-34b Ex30-34c
----------------------------------
- The DRIP is a perfume which DRIPS from tree bark.
Hence the DRIP is named by its FORM
- The FATTY is a perfume which smells like putrid FAT
Hence the FATTY is named by how it FEELS
- The SHINY is a perfume which is SHINY
Hence the SHINY is named by its FORM
LIST813b below gives others examples of items named by FORM
LIST819a below gives other examples of items named by FEEL
(The best know English example of an item named by FEEL is
HARDSHIP).
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The STYLE method seeks to describe paragraph style and
indicate which ideas are main ideas and which ideas are
illustrative examples. The THEME-DETAIL-THEME style
is used to indicate a MAIN THEME followed by
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES and DETAILS.
EXAMPLE Ex30-34d,Ex30-34e
-------------------------
Ex30-34 discusses the perfume ingredients of the Temple
perfume. The structure used is GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL
- GENERAL: Take perfumes
- DETAILS: ------------- Drippy, Shiny, Fatty perfumes
- GENERAL: Perfumes and
- ------- pure frankincense
Each of these perfumes had specific characteristics
- DRIPPY perfume was gathered from BARK DRIPS
- SHINY perfume came from SHINY looking plants
- FATTY perfume smelled like putrid FAT
The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style requires that we
perceive the entire unit as a paragraph with a
general theme. Therefore we generalize the DETAILS
listed to ANYTHING SIMILAR to them that fits the
GENERAL theme. Hence we take all similar perfumes
(those that drip, those that are shiny and those
that are bad smelling). The PURE FRANKINCENSE
is mentioned SEPARATELY and is added as is.
LIST450L summarizes this approach
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The SYMBOLISM method seeks to find verses which
MUST be interpreted symbolically. The SYMBOLISM
method also tells us the rules governing the
symbolic interpretation.
Rashi gives SYMBOLIC meaning to the items in Ex30-34
- SHINY perfume refers to FLASHY people on the go
- FATTY perfume refers to OBESE people who dont
control themselves and always say yes
- DRIPPY perfume refers to STATELY PEOPLE who do
things BIT by BIT (Drop by drop) and know how
to exercise restraint.
All three people types are needed in the community
and this is symbolized by the KETORETH which had
all ingredients.
LIST975j summarizes these symbolic arguments.

GENERAL TAKE PERFUMES ' '
DETAIL ------------- Drippy perfume*1 '
DETAIL ------------- Shiny perfume*2 '
DETAIL ------------- Fatty perfume*3 '
GENERAL PERFUMES ' '
------ ' ' and pure frankincense*5
NOTES
-----
*1 The perfumed was collected from DRIPPING bark
*2 The perfume came from SHINY plants
*3 The perfume SMELLED like putrid FAT
*4 So The Ketoreth had perfumes of all 3 types (DRIPPY,
SHINY and FATTY)*10
*5 Since the pure frankincense is mentioned AFTER
the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL therefore it is taken AS IS
and separately.
------------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES -----------------
*10 Rashi gives the 11 ingredients of the Ketoreth.
However the proper approach to Rashi is as follows
- The Bible requires 3 types of perfumes
- The Oral Traditions list 11 perfumes which fit
any one of these 3 types
In other words we should perceive the oral
traditions as also reflecting the requirements of the
verse.

PERFUME SYMBOLIZES
======= =====================================================
SHINY FLASHY person always on go
FATTY OBESE person with no self control(Never says no)
DRIPPY STATELY person (Does things BIT BY BIT(DROP BY DROP))
NOTES
-----
*1 As Rashi notes every community has all 3 types of people
- Flashy people always on the go
- Drippy Stately people who do things bit by bit
- Fatty people with no self control
A GOOD community must have all 3 types to properly
approach God.
