VERSE: Ex38-27a
RASHIS COVERED: Ex38-27a Ex25-12a Ex09-33a Lv08-12a
================= Y-Tz-K || N-T-Ch = TO SMELT ==================
THE RASHI RULE USED
-------------------
Rashi here explains the MEANING of words. We are always greatly
helped by the RADACK who wrote the book ROOTS, a book which
contains all the meanings of ALL BIBLICAL WORDS
THE RASHI-RADACK
----------------
There are 3 meanings to these 2 roots*11
- Both the roots Y-Tz-K and N-T-Ch mean TO SMELT ORE.
- Both roots metaphorically refer to any VISCOUS POURING, that
is any pouring where the LIQUID flows slowly (like VISCOUS
METAL).
- These roots also refer to anything STRONG like smolted metal
NOTE: The difference between eg SMELTED ORE vs VISCOUS POURING
is that the SMELTED ORE hardens while the VISCOUSLY poured
liquid does not.
THE LIST
--------
The LIST below shows several items to which these verbs apply
(A textual emendation of Rashi is presented in footnote *10)
=================================================================
VERSE MEANING TEXT OF VERSE or ITEM SMELTED
======== ============ ===========================================
Ex38-27a SMELT ORE Smelting of the SILVER SOCKETS
Ex25-12a SMELT ORE Smelting of GOLD rings
Jb37-18 SMELTED ORE strong like smelted DUNG (a metaphor)
Ex22-20 SMELTED ORE YOU will burn in it like SMELTED ORE
Job10-10 SMELTED ORE You smelt me, God, like smelted CREAM
Lv02-01 VISCOUS POUR Pour OIL
Ps45-03 VISCOUS POUR Grace POURS from your lips*1
Jb03-24 VISCOUS POUR My SCREAMS pour like (VISCOUS) water*2
Jb41-16 STRONG His heart HARDENED like (SMELTED) STONE
NOTES
-----
*1 The point of the metaphor is that the GRACE is genuine;
It flows in a rich slow fashion (In contrast to cheap
grace which flows like water)
*2 The point of the metaphor is that this was not a sudden
trauma in which a person Spontaneously screams--Job had
had so many tribulations that he found it difficult to scream
Even His screams poured slowly (like viscous water)
----------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ------------------------
*10 Our Rashi edition of Lv08-12a has only ONE INTRODUCTORY
word THEY POURED. It reads as follows
-------------------------------------------------------
THEY POURED: (Rashi) Annointed; Moses would pour oil
on Aarons head and then annoint the oil from his eyebrows
-------------------------------------------------------
I however would suggest WITHOUT adding words to Rashi that
there should be TWO INTRODUCTORY WORDS: POURED/ANNOINTED
Here is the verse and Rashi as I read it
VERSE: Lv08-12a
------------------------------------------------------
Moses took the annointing oil and POURED it on Aaron
and ANNOINTED him to sanctify him
------------------------------------------------------
RASHI
------------------------------------------------------
POURED/ANNOINTED: Moses FIRST poured oil on Aarons
head. Moses then smeared/annointed the oil from Aarons
eyebrows to the rest of him
------------------------------------------------------
In other words Rashi was using the method of Rabbi
Ishmael, resolving contradictory verses: See URL
http://www.Rashiyomi.Com/ri-14.htm
We there outline 5 methods by which contradictory
verses can be resolved. Here Rashi shows that the
POURING and ANNOINTING were TWO ASPECTS of the same
PROCEDURE--FIRST Moses POURED and THEN Moses
SMEARED/ANNOINTED.
Thus Rashi is not trying to say that POUR means
ANNOINT. Rather Rashi is commenting on why the
verse has 2 verbs: POUR / ANNOINT. (It has them
because they are two parts of the same procedure)
*11 Radack cites an interesting controversy between the two
Hebrew grammarians Rav Yonah and Rav Yehuda who disagree
whether NTCh and YTzK are synonyms or have slightly
different meanings. We follow Rashi and Radack that both
roots mean the same thing
