MAN meets GOD THRU TEMPLE/TORAH |
RASHI RULE USED:
-----------------
-Rashi here explains THE MEANING of a word.
-More specifically Rashi explains the meaning of an IDIOM.
Rashi confirms this meaning using
-the technique of OVERALL STRUCTURE
by which Rashi infers meaning by looking at the sequence of
paragraphs comprising a chapter.
THE RASHI
---------
There are really two Rashis here.
FIRST:
------
Rashi aligns several verses which state
----------------------------------------------------------
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE--WHAT WAS PLACED IN ARk
------- --------------------------------------------------
Dt10-02 I will write the 10 Commandments;PLACE THEM IN ARK
Ex25-16 PLACE the AYDUTH in the ark
Ex25-40 Moses placed the AYDUTH in the ark
Ex25-21 Place the AYDUTH in the ark
-----------------------------------------------------------
Since one verse states the TEN COMMANDMENTS were placed in
the ark while other verses state the AYDUTH was placed in
the ark, therefore, the simplest way of taking this is that
the TEN COMMMANDMENTS is called AYDUTH*10
NOTE: We have INFERRED that the 10 commandments are called
AYDUTH but we dont yet know what AYDUTH means
Rashi here infers meaning by ALIGING several verses.
SECOND:
-------
Ex38-21 calls the whole TEMPLE AYDUTH.
Rashi explains that AYDUTH means to MEET. In fact
there are 2 verse proofs of this
Ex25-21:22 states that
-------------------------------------------------
Place the ark cover on the ark...AND I WILL
MEET WITH YOU THERE (Y-A-D) and PROPHETICALLY
speak to you there
-------------------------------------------------
The second proof comes from the list of PARAGRAPHS in
Ex35 thru Ex40. These paragraphs (presented in the list
below) clearly show that the building of the temple was
climaxed by God revealing Himself there.
Thus AYDUTH means PROPHETIC MEETING. Both the TEMPLE in
General and the TORAH (TEN COMMANDMENTS) in particular
enabled PROPHETIC ENCOUNTERS between God and Israel*11 *12 |
BEGIN | END | PARAGRAPH TOPIC |
Ex35-04 | Ex35-29 | Donations for TEmple |
Ex35-30 | Ex36-07 | Craftsman for temple |
Ex36-08 | Ex38-20 | Construction of Temple Utensils |
Ex38-21 | Ex38-31 | Accounting of Metals in Temple construction |
Ex39-01 | Ex39-32 | Accounting of Materials in Priestly garments |
Ex39-33 | Ex39-43 | Review of Utensils and Garments by Moses |
Ex40-01 | Ex40-16 | Order by God to construct the Temple |
Ex40-17 | Ex40-33 | Moses Implements this order of God |
Ex40-34 | Ex40-38 | God Reveals Himself |
| | |
COMMENTS |
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Actually there are opinions that AYDUTH might refer
to the Torah which according to these opinions was in
the ark. However the simplest approach relies on the
literal meaning of 1K8-9 which states that ONLY THE
TEN COMMANDMENTS WERE IN THE ARK See the following
URL which discusses this and presents discussion
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ex25-16b.htm
*11 A popular approach states that Y-A-D means WITNESS
Thus the TORAH/TEN COMMANDMENTS is a witness that
God gave Prophetic commandments to Israel. Rashis
explanation that it means TESTIMONY seems however,
more natural
*12 Rashi does NOT explicitly state that AYDUTH means
PROPHETIC ENCOUNTER. Rather Rashi states this as a pun
------------------------------------------------------
The TEMPLE is a witness (ADUTH) that God forgave Israel
for the sin of the Golden calf (Since God now dwelt
amongst the Jews while by contrast the punishment for
the creation of the Golden calf was that God withdrew
from the Jews (See eg Ex33-03)
------------------------------------------------------
Such use of double puns is common in Rashi. It enabled
the Rashi comments to be remembered more easily. However
there is no need to avoid the explicit verse Ex25-21:22
which speaks about the ARK as the MEETING place.
Furthermore the TEMPLE itself is called MEETING PLACE
(Eg Lv01-01). Furthermore Rashi speaks about the fact
that now that the sin of the Golden calf is over GOD
WILL MEET WITH the Jews.
Thus it is CLEAR that the etymology of ADUTH is MEET.
We therefore interpret Rashis literal statement as
a pun--AYDUTH means both MEET and WITNESS.

THE VERSE-Ex38-27a
----------
100 Silver KIKARS were used for 100 SOCKETS
RASHI RULE USED
---------------
Rashi uses the SPREADSHEET RULE. He examines OTHER VERSES
and shows how in the construction of the Temple there were
exactly 100 silver sockets
THE LIST
--------
Here is an itemization of where the 100 silver sockets
were used. Other sockets were copper |

BOARDS OVERLAYED WITH SILVER |
RASHI RULE USED
---------------
Rashi frequently used the method of OTHER VERSES.
The OTHER VERSES could be used in any of 6 ways.
Sometimes Rashi simply provided further DETAIL from
the OTHER VERSES
REFERENCE
---------
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/other-20.htm
This reference presents the 6 methods of OTHER VERSES
THE VERSE
---------
Ex38-28a states that the boards of the temple were
overlayed with silver.
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi cross references Ex27-17 which states that it was
the boards of the TEMPLE COURTYARD that were overlayed with
silver. (Other boards were overlayed with Gold).
THE LIST
--------
The LIST below shows uses of the OTHER VERSE rule where
the OTHER VERSE provides more detail |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | OTHER | DETAIL ADDED |

can even be a Levite (not necessarily a Priest)
*2 Dt26 states that A FEW Jews came to Egypt while Gn46
explains that 70 gave
*3 Nu36 discusses a daughter inheriting while Nu27

Y-Tz-K || N-T-Ch = TO SMELT |
THE RASHI RULE USED
-------------------
Rashi here explains the MEANING of words. We are always greatly
helped by the RADACK who wrote the book ROOTS, a book which
contains all the meanings of ALL BIBLICAL WORDS
THE RASHI-RADACK
----------------
There are 3 meanings to these 2 roots*11
- Both the roots Y-Tz-K and N-T-Ch mean TO SMELT ORE.
- Both roots metaphorically refer to any VISCOUS POURING, that
is any pouring where the LIQUID flows slowly (like VISCOUS
METAL).
- These roots also refer to anything STRONG like smolted metal
NOTE: The difference between eg SMELTED ORE vs VISCOUS POURING
is that the SMELTED ORE hardens while the VISCOUSLY poured
liquid does not.
THE LIST
--------
The LIST below shows several items to which these verbs apply
(A textual emendation of Rashi is presented in footnote *10) |
VERSE | MEANING | TEXT OF VERSE or ITEM SMELTED |
Ex38-27a | SMELT ORE | Smelting of the SILVER SOCKETS |
Ex25-12a | SMELT ORE | Smelting of GOLD rings |
Jb37-18 | SMELTED ORE | strong like smelted DUNG (a metaphor) |
Ex22-20 | SMELTED ORE | YOU will burn in it like SMELTED ORE |
Job10-10 | SMELTED ORE | You smelt me, God, like smelted CREAM |
Lv02-01 | VISCOUS POUR | Pour OIL |
Ps45-03 | VISCOUS POUR | Grace POURS from your lips*1 |
Jb03-24 | VISCOUS POUR | My SCREAMS pour like (VISCOUS) water*2 |
Jb41-16 | STRONG | His heart HARDENED like (SMELTED) STONE |
| | |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The point of the metaphor is that the GRACE is genuine;
It flows in a rich slow fashion (In contrast to cheap
grace which flows like water)
*2 The point of the metaphor is that this was not a sudden
trauma in which a person Spontaneously screams--Job had
had so many tribulations that he found it difficult to scream
Even His screams poured slowly (like viscous water)
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Our Rashi edition of Lv08-12a has only ONE INTRODUCTORY
word THEY POURED. It reads as follows
-------------------------------------------------------
THEY POURED: (Rashi) Annointed; Moses would pour oil
on Aarons head and then annoint the oil from his eyebrows
-------------------------------------------------------
I however would suggest WITHOUT adding words to Rashi that
there should be TWO INTRODUCTORY WORDS: POURED/ANNOINTED
Here is the verse and Rashi as I read it
VERSE: Lv08-12a
------------------------------------------------------
Moses took the annointing oil and POURED it on Aaron
and ANNOINTED him to sanctify him
------------------------------------------------------
RASHI
------------------------------------------------------
POURED/ANNOINTED: Moses FIRST poured oil on Aarons
head. Moses then smeared/annointed the oil from Aarons
eyebrows to the rest of him
------------------------------------------------------
In other words Rashi was using the method of Rabbi
Ishmael, resolving contradictory verses: See URL
http://www.Rashiyomi.Com/ri-14.htm
We there outline 5 methods by which contradictory
verses can be resolved. Here Rashi shows that the
POURING and ANNOINTING were TWO ASPECTS of the same
PROCEDURE--FIRST Moses POURED and THEN Moses
SMEARED/ANNOINTED.
Thus Rashi is not trying to say that POUR means
ANNOINT. Rather Rashi is commenting on why the
verse has 2 verbs: POUR / ANNOINT. (It has them
because they are two parts of the same procedure)
*11 Radack cites an interesting controversy between the two
Hebrew grammarians Rav Yonah and Rav Yehuda who disagree
whether NTCh and YTzK are synonyms or have slightly
different meanings. We follow Rashi and Radack that both
roots mean the same thing

exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do
=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
---------------------------------------
Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
while DOING ITS WORK
* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
--------------------------------------------------
Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
(EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS
* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
--------------------------------------------------
Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
(EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
(GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
* The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
* The law does not apply to real-estate or slander
=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)
==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================
* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
--------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
- Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)
* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
