VERSE: Gn02-05a
RASHIS COVERED: Gn02-05a Ex09-30a Ex12-34a Nu11-33a
============ THE HEBREW WORD TEREM means NOT YET ================
BACKGROUND
----------
The concepts
-- NOT YET
-- BEFORE
-- MAKING PRIOR
are related.
THE TEXT
--------
Ex09-30 Moses tells Pharoh: I will remove this plague of
hailstones but I know that you do NOT YET believe in God
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi points out that the following translations are
inappropriate for the above verse:
-- I know this is BEFORE you beieve in God (The implication
being that Pharoh would one day believe in God--this
never happened)
-- Belief in God must COME BEFORE God removes the plague
(This implies that if Pharoh would not believe in God
the plague would not be removed: In fact the plague was
removed even though Pharoh hardened his heart)
THE LIST
--------
We present 4 Verses where Rashi translated TEREM as NOT YET.
Interestingly there are only a few dozen occurences of TEREM
in the whole Bible.

=====
*1 Rashi explores 3 possibilities of meaning of Ex09-30a
--------------------------------------------------------------
- BEFORE you believe in GOd Implies he-ll believe
- You must believe BEFORE plague removed Implies he-ll believe
- You still DO NOT BELIEVE in God
--------------------------------------------------------------
Only the last interpretation is consisent with the fact that
Pharoh never believed in God
