VERSE: Gn02-05a

RASHIS COVERED: Gn02-05a Ex09-30a Ex12-34a Nu11-33a

THE HEBREW WORD TEREM means NOT YET

BACKGROUND
----------
The concepts
-- NOT YET
-- BEFORE
-- MAKING PRIOR
are related.

THE TEXT
--------
Ex09-30 Moses tells Pharoh: I will remove this plague of
hailstones but I know that you do NOT YET believe in God

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi points out that the following translations are
inappropriate for the above verse:
-- I know this is BEFORE you beieve in God (The implication
being that Pharoh would one day believe in God--this
never happened)

-- Belief in God must COME BEFORE God removes the plague
(This implies that if Pharoh would not believe in God
the plague would not be removed: In fact the plague was
removed even though Pharoh hardened his heart)

THE LIST
--------
We present 4 Verses where Rashi translated TEREM as NOT YET.
Interestingly there are only a few dozen occurences of TEREM
in the whole Bible.
VERSETEXT OF VERSE
Gn02-05aGrass was NOT YET sprouting
Ex09-30aYou do NOT YET believe in God
Ex12-34aThey carried their dough while it had NOT YET leavened
Nu11-33aThey died while the meat had NOT YET been chewed
COMMENTS

*1 Rashi explores 3 possibilities of meaning of Ex09-30a
   --------------------------------------------------------------
   - BEFORE you believe in GOd Implies he-ll believe
   - You must believe BEFORE plague removed Implies he-ll believe
   - You still DO NOT BELIEVE in God
   --------------------------------------------------------------
  Only the last interpretation is consisent with the fact that
  Pharoh never believed in God

RASHIS COVERED: Gn03-06b Gn03-06c Gn03-06d

ALIGNMENT OF Gn03-05 & Gn03-06

BACKGROUND
----------
Recall that the snake wanted Eve to sin and eat from the tree
of knowledge

THE TEXT
--------
The snake offered 3 arguments to Eve when requesting in Gn03-05
that she eat from the tree of knowledge
- Your eyes will open
- You will be like God
- You will know Good and evil

The Bible then relates in Gn03-06 how Eve studied the tree
- She found it luscious to sight
- Beneficial to eat
- Precious for awareness

THE RASHI
---------
So Rashi-is-Simple: Rashi notes that the 3 arguments of the
snake (EyeOpen, GodLike, Knowledge) correspond exactly to
the 3 items Eve noted (LusciousSight, Beneficial, Awareness)

THE LIST
--------
Here is the exact correspondence. The footnotes provide
further detail.
VERSEPHRASE1PHRASE2PHRASE3
Gn03-05Your EYES will openYoull Be like GodKNOWING Good/evil
Gn03-06luscious to SIGHTBENEFICIAL to eatmakes AWARE
Differs*1*2*3
COMMENTS

*1 Rashi:Gn03-06c--The connection between SIGHT & EYES is obvious

*2 Rashi:Gn03-06b--The connection between BECOMING GODLIKE vs
   BENEFICIAL TO EAT is certainly not clear. However the other
   two phrases (EYES OPEN:LUSCIOUS SIGHT & KNOW GOOD EVIL:MAKE
   AWARE) are almost perfect matches. Therefore Rashi felt
   justified in stretching the connection in the remaining phrase
   See footnote *10 for a more thorough analysis

*3 Rashi:Gn03-06d--THe connection betwen AWARE & KNOWING is clear
   Note that the Actual translation should be
   ---------------------------------------------
   Eve saw that fruit is precious for insight
   ---------------------------------------------
LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 This is a general principle which we use frequently:
    -------------------------------------------------------
    If 2 lists align up clearly at all but one item:
    Then we are justified in assuming the lists completely
    align. In particular we are justified in STRETCHING it
    on the remaining unclear item
    -------------------------------------------------------

    See http://www.Rashiyomi.Com/gn04-08a.htm in this issue
    for another example.

    In terms of the details of the correspondence: I would
    suggest that when it says that Eve saw that the fruit
    was BENEFICIAL TO EAT it means that by eating it Eve
    would achieve the state of BEING LIKE GOD and this
    is the benefit of eating it.

    Again this connection does NOT follow from Grammar
    or dictionary meaning. Rather it follows from rules of
    STYLE & ALIGNMENT

4 STAGES TO MURDER

BACKGROUND
----------
I have explained many times that the classical approach to Rashi
uses 2, rather than 3 sets of rules. The classical approach seeks
* rules of GRAMMAR
* rules of MEANING
Additionally, we have advocated onemore set of rules:
* rules of STYLE & CLIMAX.

We believe the Torah will state things
in sequences of 3 and 4 stages. Furthermore when we see 3-4
phrases describing the same act we are justified in interpreting
the phrases climatically: This is called the principle of CLIMAX

REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
---------

THE TEXTS
---------
Dt19-11 (The 4 stages of Murder)
- When a man HATES another
- and AMBUSHES him
- and CONFRONTS him
- and Kills him
(Then there is a death penalty)

Gn04-08
- And KAYIN spoke to Hevel
- And when they were in the FIELD
- Kayin CONFRONTED Hevel
- And KILLED HIM

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi-is-Simple: Rashi views the 4 stages in Dt19-11:
HATE-AMBUSH-CONFRONT-KILL as parallel to 4 stages hinted
at in Gn04-08: SPEAKING-PICKY:FIELD(Ambush):CONFRONT:KILL
Rashis point is based upon style and CLIMAX

THE LIST
--------
We present the 4 stages in Dt19-11 and explore the parallelism
with Gn04-08. The footnotes amplify
STAGETEXT OF Dt19-11TEXT OF Gn04-08
HATRED*1When a person HATES anotherKayin ALWAYS SPOKE to Hevel
AMBUSH*2And he AMBUSHES him& They were in a FIELD
CONFRONT& He CONFRONTS him*3& Kayin CONFRONTED Hevel
KILLSMITE him & he DIES*4& He KILLED him
COMMENTS

*1 Notice how 3 of the 4 stages parallel closely (This is
   indicated by the CAPPED WORDS in the list: KILL-KILL,
   CONFRONT-CONFRONT, AMBUSH-FIELD). Hence FOR REASONS OF
   STYLE we are justified in stretching the parallel
   connection between the other 2 stages.*10

*2 AMBUSH & FIELD are not identical but clearly relate

*3 The connection between CONFRONT & CONFRONT is clear

*4 The connection between KILL & KILL is clear

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Here are the 4 stages and which ones are CLEARLY PARALLEL
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    STAGE 4: CLEAR           KILL        KILL
    STAGE 3: CLEAR           CONFRONT    CONFRONT
    STAGE 2: ALMOST CLEAR AMBUSH FIELD (Ambush place)
    STAGE 1: NOT CLEAR HATE TALKING
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    I guess the implication is that if you always speak to
    someone you will end up being picky and hating them.

    I again emphasize that Rashis point is based on STYLE not
    on grammar or dictionary meaning. This is in fact what
    Rashi says on Gn04-08a
    -------------------------------------------------------
    There are many homiletic interpretations of this verse
    (that is homilies based on meaning & grammar). But I
    am giving the SIMPLE meaning of the text (that is, a
    meaning based on STYLE vs GRAMMAR or MEANING)
    -------------------------------------------------------

            Nu03-04a Gn11-28a Ex20-03c Dt05-07a

===========================================================
THE GRAMMAR RULE: Rashi comments on RARE or SIMILAR usages
        REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.Com/grammar.htm
===========================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: BA-ah means CAME;ba-AH means COMING(Gn46-26a)

* EXAMPLE 2:THE SENTENCE: 0.2% of Biblical sentences are 2verses
 -(Dt11-07:08) It was not your fathers who saw this;rather you

* EXAMPLE 3: Hitpael has different rules if 1st root letter is
   Tzade (USE: Ni-Tz-Ta-Dack not Ni-Th-Tza-Dack--Gn44-16a)

================================================================
THE CITATION RULE: Rashi enriches meaning by citing OTHER verses
         REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.Com/other-20.htm
================================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: Dt26-05d We went down to Egypt with A FEW PEOPLE
	    ENRICHED by Gn46-27: We went down with 70 people

* EXAMPLE 2: Lv01-05a Non-priests may SLAUGHTER offerings
	    This law DERIVED from explicit statement in 2Chr30-17

	    DERIVED from possible interpretation of 1-Chr18-19

* EXAMPLE 4: Gn35-22a Reuven Slept with Bilhah(Fathers concubine)
	    Gn49-04 Reuven PLAYED with fathers BEDS
        CONCLUSION: Reuven inteferred with fathers personal
	life(ruffled bedspreads); Bible condemns Reuven by
	exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do

=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------
	    Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
	    Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
			   while DOING ITS WORK

* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
            --------------------------------------------------
 Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
	   (EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
	   Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
	   It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS

* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
            --------------------------------------------------
 Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
	  (EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
	  (GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
 RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
                that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
 EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
 RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
         But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
 RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
	     verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE        PHRASE #1       PHRASE #2       PHRASE #3
  -------      ---------       ---------       ------------------
  Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04      Dont            MAKE     idols

  RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
