VERSE: Gn04-08a

================== 4 STAGES TO MURDER ===========================

BACKGROUND
----------
I have explained many times that the classical approach to Rashi
uses 2, rather than 3 sets of rules. The classical approach seeks
* rules of GRAMMAR
* rules of MEANING
Additionally, we have advocated onemore set of rules:
* rules of STYLE & CLIMAX.

  We believe the Torah will state things
  in sequences of 3 and 4 stages. Furthermore when we see 3-4
  phrases describing the same act we are justified in interpreting
  the phrases climatically: This is called the principle of CLIMAX

THE TEXTS
---------
Dt19-11 (The 4 stages of Murder)
- When a man HATES another
- and AMBUSHES him
- and CONFRONTS him
- and Kills him
(Then there is a death penalty)

Gn04-08
- And KAYIN spoke to Hevel
- And when they were in the FIELD
- Kayin CONFRONTED Hevel
- And KILLED HIM

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi-is-Simple: Rashi views the 4 stages in Dt19-11:
HATE-AMBUSH-CONFRONT-KILL as parallel to 4 stages hinted
at in Gn04-08: SPEAKING-PICKY:FIELD(Ambush):CONFRONT:KILL
Rashis point is based upon style and CLIMAX

THE LIST
--------
We present the 4 stages in Dt19-11 and explore the parallelism
with Gn04-08. The footnotes amplify
=================================================================
STAGE TEXT OF Dt19-11 TEXT OF Gn04-08
======== ===========================  ===========================
HATRED*1 When a person HATES another Kayin ALWAYS SPOKE to Hevel
AMBUSH*2 And he AMBUSHES him & They were in a FIELD
CONFRONT & He CONFRONTS him*3 & Kayin CONFRONTED Hevel
KILL SMITE him & he DIES*4 & He KILLED him

NOTES
=====
*1 Notice how 3 of the 4 stages parallel closely (This is
   indicated by the CAPPED WORDS in the list: KILL-KILL,
   CONFRONT-CONFRONT, AMBUSH-FIELD). Hence FOR REASONS OF
   STYLE we are justified in stretching the parallel
   connection between the other 2 stages.*10

*2 AMBUSH & FIELD are not identical but clearly relate

*3 The connection between CONFRONT & CONFRONT is clear

*4 The connection between KILL & KILL is clear

------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ----------------------------

*10 Here are the 4 stages and which ones are CLEARLY PARALLEL
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    STAGE 4: CLEAR           KILL        KILL
    STAGE 3: CLEAR           CONFRONT    CONFRONT
    STAGE 2: ALMOST CLEAR AMBUSH FIELD (Ambush place)
    STAGE 1: NOT CLEAR HATE TALKING
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    I guess the implication is that if you always speak to
    someone you will end up being picky and hating them.

    I again emphasize that Rashis point is based on STYLE not
    on grammar or dictionary meaning. This is in fact what
    Rashi says on Gn04-08a
    -------------------------------------------------------
    There are many homiletic interpretations of this verse
    (that is homilies based on meaning & grammar). But I
    am giving the SIMPLE meaning of the text (that is, a
    meaning based on STYLE vs GRAMMAR or MEANING)
