VERSE: Gn06-11b

RASHIS COVERED: Gn06-11b Gn06-13b

========================= WORLD DESTRUCTION ====================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
There are two verses describing world sin during the time of
the flood. When listing the flood generation sins the Torah
mentions both THEFT-MURDER crimes as well as IMMORALITY crimes.
However when indicating the DECISION to destroy the world
because of its sins ONLY the THEFT-MURDER crimes are mentioned
This leads Rashi to identify THEFT-MURDER as more important
than IMMORALITY in Gods decision making process about
punishment

---------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE:       ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE:    TWO CASES
----------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.

But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.

The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances.

A nifty way of explaining the ALIGNED verses is to think
of ALIGNMENT as the vehicle that the Biblical Author uses
to indicate FOOTNOTES. That is, a modern writer might use
FOOTNOTES to indicate details; the Biblical Author instead
used REPEATED ALIGNED VERSES with DIFFERENT DETAILS.

The simplest case of ALIGNMENT is when the differences
CLEARLY and EXPLICITLY show that we are dealing with
two cases each with different details. The STANDARD
example below from the 10 commandments illustrates this

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Perhaps the simplest example of an alignment revealing
two cases and two laws occurs in the 10 commandments.
Ex01-02:03 states

----------------------------------------------
Ex20-02 you shall NOT HAVE the gods of others
Ex20-03 you shall NOT MAKE idols
----------------------------------------------

STUDENT EXERCISES:
------------------
-- What is the SAME in the ALIGNED verses
-- What is DIFFERENT in the ALIGNED verses
-- State the 2 CASES you infer from the aligned differences

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
- Both verses begin YOU SHALL NOT. In other words
  they are negative prohibitions.

- One verse prohibits HAVING idols while the 2nd verse
  prohibits MAKING idols

- THere are 2 separate idolatry prohibitions: MANUFACTURE
  (even if you dont keep them) and OWNERSHIP/POSSESION
  (even if you dont make them)

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
3 student exercises listed above.

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We present two lists: In this list we align the two verses
about the state of the world. In the second list we show
that the word CHAMAS means MURDER-THEFT.
===============================================================
VERSE    PHRASE1                     PHRASE2          PHRASE3
======== =========================== ================ =========
Gn06-13b I-ll destroy world because --------------- of theft
Gn06-11 The world is ------------- corrupted thefting
Differ   *1                          *2               *2

NOTES
-----
*1 One verse describes the sins of the world while the second
   describes why God is destroying the world Thus the 2
   verses deal with 2 cases

*2 When discussing the sins of the world CORRUPTION is mentioned
   (which denotes sexual and Idolatrous crimes) while when
   discussing the REASONS for destroying the world CORRUPTION
   is not mentioned

   This leads Rashi to the conclusion that THEFT-MURDER (vs
   general immorality) was the more important determinant
   in destroying the world

   This comparison of THEFT-MURDER vs IMMORALITY carries
   implications for our values on these sins.
=================================================================

=================== CHAMAS--THEFT-MURDER =================

 In this second list we show that CHAMAS refers to
 such crimes as THEFT-MURDER etc *10
==========================================================
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH MEANING OF chamas CAPPED
========== ===============================================
Ju09-24    MURDER of 70 brothers
Gn49-05    Shimon/Levi MURDERED Schem
Am03-10 hoard THEFT & BOOTY in their treasure chests
Is59-06 They do CHAMAS with their hands
Dt16-16:19 Witnesses of CHAMAS..(THEFT/MURDER/MORAL SIN)

NOTES
-----

---------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES -----------------

*10 Interestingly Rashi identifies CHAMAS with THEFT
    But as is clear from the above list it can refer
    EITHER to THEFT or MURDER.

    Consequently this is a (minor) example of how
    Rashi can/should be amended
