VERSE: Gn18-07b

RULE: The Hebrew word N-A-R means TRAINEE.*1 Hence it can
mean teenager or servant, people involved in training.
On each verse with the word N-A-R=TRAINEE, Rashi attempts
to guess who was the most likely person being trained.

EXAMPLES (Rashis guess on who was being trained is in CAPS)
--------

(1) Gn18-7b And Abraham gave the food to the lad (ISHMAEL)
(2) Gn22-03c & His 2 lads were with him (ISHAMEL,ELIEZER)
(3) Nu11-27a And the lad(GERSHOM) ran & told Moses
(4) Ex24-05a And the lads (FIRST BORN) offered sacrifices

NOTES
-----
*1 The fundamental unified meaning of the Hebrew root N-A-R
is VIGOROUSLY SHAKE. Hence we have the following meanings

MEANING VERSE TEXT
=============== ======== ======================================
Winnow/shake Isa33-15 He who SHAKES his hand from bribery
Winnow/shake 2-14-27 & God DUSTED OFF Egypt into the sea*3
Chills/Seizures Job36-14 May they die with Chills & Seizures *5
Brey/Roar Jer51-38 They ROARED like lions *2

 -------------------------------------------------------
The concept TRAINEE comes from viewing the trainee
as "removing rough spots"--"shaking off the dust"--
 "becoming polished" *4
 -------------------------------------------------------

Grow up 1Sam1-24 And the lad (Samuel) had GROWN UP
Lad 1Sam1-24 Someone who is GROWING UP
Servant 1-37-2 And Joseph SERVED Bilhah's children

*2 When a lion breys it vigorously shakes its mane

*3 I think the picture is that God threw Egypt into the sea
the way a housewife shakes off the dust of a blanket.

*4 Seeing the unifying meaning of N-A-R is not necessary
to understand the Rashi. All that is necessary is to know
that N-A-R bascially means TRAINEE not SON

*5 A controversial verse---but the meaning CHILLS, SEIZURES
makes the most sense
