BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the
same way a dictionary explains words. Rashi has a variety of
vehicles by which he explains words. One vehicle is to present
a Hebrew root, suggest a unifying meaning*11, and then apply this
suggested unifying meaning to several examples. The application
of this unifying meaning to disparate examples gives credibility
to Rashis suggested thesis and also enriches our understanding
of the root. This Rashi is a peach of a Rashi that illustrates
5 distinct levels of understanding Rashi.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We present about half a dozen verses that use the root CHET YUD
which means LIFE. The list shows how these meanings relate to
RECURRENCE. The footnotes further enrich our understanding.

NOTES
-----
*1 This Rashi (Gn18-10a) presents the unifying theme.
The RECURRING DATE NEXT YEAR is called the LIVE TIME.
Thus we explicitly see that LIFE=RECURRENCE

The list revus this idea in other Rashis

*2 The philosophical literature on the meaning of life is
rich and complex. Suffice it to say that the Torah views
LIFE vs INANIMACY as AN EXISTENCE THAT HAS THE AUTONOMOUS
ABILITY TO RECUR (by sustaining itself)

*3 The word LIVE when contrasted with ANIMAL means WILD LIFE
(CHET YUD HEY). However this word is never used for birds.

Thus this word (LIVE) is new here (LIVE BIRD). Rashi uses
the RECURRENCE IDEA---a LIVE BIRD is a bird that can
recover (RECUR) from any illness. This excludes a MORTALLY
WOUNDED BIRD (TERAYFAH) who cannot RECOVER/RECUR from
   their illness

------------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES ----------------------

*10 We outline 5 levels by which this Rashi can be approached

    LEVEL 1
    -------
Rashi is simply giving a TRADITION of dictionary meaning
    LIVE=SUPPORT(Giving food and water)

    LEVEL 2
    -------
Besides giving a Dictionary meaning Rashi is also reasonable:
After all SUPPORT (Giving food and water) is a means of
    sustaining life

    LEVEL 3
    -------
We find support for Rashi from a SINGLE similar Rashi:
Nu35-03a is also a Rashi where LIVE means SUPPORT

    LEVEL 4
    -------
We find support for Rashi from a LIST of Rashi illustrating
    the UNIFYING THEME of LIFE=RECURRENCE

    LEVEL 5
    -------
(Rav Hirsch) We relate the root Cheth-Yud-Hey to Hey-Yud-Hey
Just as CHET is a more intense form of HEY so too CHAYA,
LIFE, is a more intense form of HYH, existence.

*11 Recall that Rashi was not written in Textbook style.
Frequently if Rashi has a unifying theme with several
application then he will a) state the unifying theme
in just one Rashi b) state each application in its place
It is up to the reader to gather these Rashis and
and reorganize them in textbook style (Which is one of
the goals of this email group)

*12 Rashi makes two points here
    - First he explains that LIVE FLESH means SCAB (And we
have connected this with the idea of RECURRENCE(Of skin)

    - Second Rashi generalizes the Biblical statement that
LIVE FLESH IN A GRADE 2 LEPROUS SPOT CAUSES IMPURITY
to the law that LIVE FLESH IN ANY LEPROUS SPOT CAUSEs
    IMPURITY.

This second purpose of Rashi (The generalization) will
be dealt with at the appropriate time in another Rashi

*13 Rashi makes two points here
    - Rashi explains that LIVE FLESH means SCAB.

    - Rashi also explains why the phrase LIVE FLESH occurs
thrice in this chapter (Why not use a pronoun). This aspect
of Rashi will be fully dealt with in the next posting
