VERSE: Gn26-14a

==================== OH sound vs OOO sound =====================

BACKGROUND
----------
Certain Hebrew word pairs have the same spelling but differ
in one syllable-- an OH vs an OO.

THE TEXT
--------
Gn26-14a says that Jacob had big AVOODAH (Assets/portfolio)

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi explains that
-- AVOHDAH refers to ONE asset
-- AVOODAH refers to MANY assets (A PORTFOLIO)

THE LIST
--------
The LIST below shows many such word pairs with an OH-OO
difference. It seems that the OO form is always more
intense.
=================================================================
OH FORM MEANS OO FORM MEANS WHY OO IS MORE INTENSE
======= ======= ======== ========= ==============================
OHR Light OOR Fire FIRE produces LIGHT*1
GADOL   Big     GeDOOLAH Greatness Big=attribute;GREATNESS=Object
AVODAH Assets AVOODAH Portfolio Portfolio=many assets*2
KOHR    Measure KOOR     Pot       KOR=attribute;POT=object
YAKOHM Startle YAKOOM Get up Get up is permanant*3
ATHMOL  Yestrdy ETHMOOL  Monday*4  Yestrdy=attribute;Mnday=Object

NOTES
=====
*1 OOR is a rare word. Perhaps the clearest example is
   Is47-14 A BONFIRE TO SIT NEAR

*2 Rashi Gn26-14a

*3 YaKOHM occurs once in Tenach in Ecc12-04. The normal
   future of the verb TO GET UP, is YAKOOM. Ecc12 is
   describing OLD AGE -- in that context we are told
   that in old age PEOPLE GET UP (YAKOHM) TO BIRD CALLS
   I therefore suggest that a more precise translation
   would be PEOPLE STARTLE TO BIRD CALLS, the point being
   that STARTLE is a MINI GETTING UP. Since this verse
   occurs once we would have to consider this conjecture

*4 ETHMOOL also occurs twice in Tenach. Many commentators
   translate it as YESTERDAY. But Rashi(Isa30-33) translates
   it as Monday. Rashi explains
   ----------------------------------------------------------
   MONDAY is the first day of the week that has a yesterday
   ----------------------------------------------------------
   Thus YESTERDAY would be the ATTRIBUTE and MONDAY the
   object. (It is not however clear how Rashi translates
   the other usage of ETHMOOL in Michah2-8). As I point out
   in my Tradition article this Rashi/Verse would then be the
   source for its explicit statement: HELL WAS CREATED ON MONDAY
