VERSE: Gn26-14z

OH sound vs OOO sound

BACKGROUND
----------
Certain Hebrew word pairs have the same spelling but differ
in one syllable-- an OH vs an OO.

THE TEXT
--------
Gn26-14a says that Jacob had big AVOODAH (Assets/portfolio)

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi explains that
-- AVOHDAH refers to ONE asset
-- AVOODAH refers to MANY assets (A PORTFOLIO)

THE LIST
--------
The LIST below shows many such word pairs with an OH-OO
difference. It seems that the OO form is always more
intense.
OH FORMMEANSOO FORMMEANSWHY OO IS MORE INTENSE
OHRLightOORFireFIRE produces LIGHT*1
GADOLBigGeDOOLAHGreatnessBig=attribute;GREATNESS=Object
AVODAHAssetsAVOODAHPortfolioPortfolio=many assets*2
KOHRMeasureKOORPotKOR=attribute;POT=object
YAKOHMStartleYAKOOMGet upGet up is permanant*3
ATHMOLYestrdyETHMOOLMonday*4Yestrdy=attribute;Mnday=Object
COMMENTS

*1 OOR is a rare word. Perhaps the clearest example is
Is47-14 A BONFIRE TO SIT NEAR

*2 Rashi Gn26-14a

*3 YaKOHM occurs once in Tenach in Ecc12-04. The normal
future of the verb TO GET UP, is YAKOOM. Ecc12 is
describing OLD AGE -- in that context we are told
that in old age PEOPLE GET UP (YAKOHM) TO BIRD CALLS
I therefore suggest that a more precise translation
would be PEOPLE STARTLE TO BIRD CALLS, the point being
that STARTLE is a MINI GETTING UP. Since this verse
occurs once we would have to consider this conjecture

*4 ETHMOOL also occurs twice in Tenach. Many commentators
translate it as YESTERDAY. But Rashi(Isa30-33) translates
   it as Monday. Rashi explains
   ----------------------------------------------------------
MONDAY is the first day of the week that has a yesterday
   ----------------------------------------------------------
Thus YESTERDAY would be the ATTRIBUTE and MONDAY the
object. (It is not however clear how Rashi translates
the other usage of ETHMOOL in Michah2-8). As I point out
in my Tradition article this Rashi/Verse would then be the
source for its explicit statement: HELL WAS CREATED ON MONDAY

RASHI CROSS REFERENCES CITATIONS

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 fundamental Rashi techniques is the CITATION OF
CROSS REFERENCES. In this technique Rashi will take a statement
in one verse and SUPPORT/MODIFY/CONTRAST it with a CROSS
REFERENCE in another verse.

REFERENCE
---------
Read the 6 classes of Rashi rules at
http://www.Rashiyomi.Com/rules-01.htm

For a discussion of the six methods of cross referencing with
examples see http://www.RashiYomi.Com/other-20.htm

THE TEXT
--------
May God give you the blessings of Abraham to you & your children
to inherit the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi cites the actual texts where God promised Abraham these
things. For example Gn26-18 states IN YOUR DESCENDANTS WILL
BE BLESSED ALL NATIONS. This corresponds to the statement
of Isaac in Gn28-03:04 AND YOU WILL BECOME A CONGREGATION
OF NATIONS

THE LIST
--------
Rashi cross reference 2 or 3 phrases. We add to this list
of cross references. Thus this posting illustrates method
5 of the technique of OTHER VERSES; the presentation of
MULTIPLE CONFIRMATIONS
VERSETEXT OF VERSE WHERESIMILAR PHRASE IN Gn28-04
Gn22-17For I will BLESS YOUGod will give you ABES BLESSINGS
Gn22-18Your CHILDREN BLESSDGod will BLESS..YOU & YOUR CHILDREN
Gn13-17Ill give you the landYoull inherit land of sojournings
Gn15-16children will returnYoull inherit land of sojournings*1
Gn17-04a father of nationsbecome a congregation of nations*2
COMMENTS

*1 The full text of Gn15-13:16 is
   --------------------------------------------------------
Your children will be SOJOURNERS in a land not theirs...
..and I will judge this land...and the 4th generation
of your children will return there (to the land of
   their sojournings to inherit it)
   --------------------------------------------------------

The above words echo the words of Gn28-04 which state
   -----------------------------------------------------
You (and your children) will inherit the land
   of their sojournings
   -----------------------------------------------------

*2 This last phrase belongs to Gn28-03. Rashi seems to cross
reference the whole statement of Isaac Gn28-03:04. The
full text of Gn17-04 is AND YOU WILL BECOME A FATHER OF
NATIONS (Rashi cites the beginning of Gn17-02:04 AND I
WILL MAKE YOU A GREAT NATION...AND YOU WILL BECOME A
   CONGREGATION OF NATIONS

REPEATING KEYWORDS INDICATE PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 fundamental Rashi methods is to describe how
the Bible implements modern typing techniques. The Bible has
its own methods for implementing such modern word techniques
as Bold, Footnotes, bullets, paragraphs etc.

REFERENCE
---------
See a short, punchy, compact description of the 6 Rashi rule
classes at http://www.RashiYomi.Com/rules-01.htm

THE TEXT
--------
Gn28-06:08 basically says that
* Isaac ordered Jacob not to intermarry (& Jacob listened)
* Esauv saw this and decided that he shouldnt intermarry either

THE RASHI
---------
* Modern English implements a paragraph structure using
a BLANK LINE before and after the paragraph
* The Bible implements a paragraph structure by repeating
a KEY PHRASE.

THE LIST
--------
Gn28-06:08 repeats the phrase AND ESAUV SAW. The Bible thereby
indicates that everything between the two AND ESAUV SAW is
contained in one paragraph. In effect the Bible says
* Esauv SAW: How his father prohibited intermarriage to Jacob
* Esauv SAW: Intermarriage (With canaanites) is bad
* Hence Esauv decided he shouldnt intermarry

To emphasize the Biblical structure we have used the modern
MS WORD technique of levels of indentation. The two AND ESAUV
SAW are placed in LEVEL #1 of indentation thereby indicating
that they form a paragraph.

The LEVEL #2 indentation contains the BLESSING/COMMANDMENTS
of ISAAC as well as Jacobs LISTENING to these commandments.
Esauv saw Isaacs COMMANDMENT and Jacobs LISTENING & decided
to abstain from Canaanites also.

Note that this linking of AND JACOB LISTENED to the phrases
AND ISAAC COMMANDED becomes obvious when we indent. This is
Rashis point on Gn28-07a.

The LEVEL #3 INDENTATION contains the SUBSTANCE of the
THE COMMAND/BLESSING THAT ESAUV SAW: That is, it contains
the FACTS that Jacob should not intermarry which Esauv
followed

Please read the following table from left to right and from
top to bottom (Be sure to read it in a Fixed font like
COURIER) Also glance over each column to see commonality
VERSELEVEL #1LEVEL #2LEVEL #3
Gn28-06AND ESAUV SAW------------------------
Gn28-06-------------That Isaac blessed Jacob
Gn28-06-------------------------------------Sent him to Aram
Gn28-06-------------------------------------To marry
Gn28-06-------------When he blessed him-----
Gn28-06-------------He commanded him
Gn28-06-------------------------------------Dont intermarry
Gn28-07-------------And Jacob listened--*1--
Gn28-07-------------------------------------& Went to Aram
Gn28-08AND ESAUV SAW------------------------
Gn28-08-------------------------------------bad to intermarr
Gn28-08Esauv--------------------------------married Arabs
Gn28-08-------------------------------------& took Basemath
COMMENTS

*1 Rashis point on Gn28-07a is that the phrase AND JACOB
LISTENED is linked to the previous level-2 phrases:
ISAAC COMMANDED JACOB / ISAAC BLESSED JACOB.

That is, Esauv saw this link between Isaacs command and
Jacobs listening and hence decided to behave like him.

Kuph-Tzade has 9 Meanings

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 major functions of Rashi is to provide a Biblical
dictionary -- that is, to list words and all their meanings.

REFERENCE

TEXT - Gn27-46a
----------------
Rivkah said to Isaac: I am DISGUSTED: If Jacob
takes a Canaanite wife what purpose does my life have

RASHI
-----
Rashi identifies DISGUSTED as 1 of
the 9 meanings of KUPH-TZADE*10

THE LIST
---------
Combining Rashi and Radack we have 9 meanings to Kuph-Tzade.
In this list however, which will be completed next issue,
we only present the Rashis pointing out that KUPH-TZADE
means DISGUSTED.

Rashi suggests two nuances/etymologies *11 *12 for KTZ=DISGUSTED
- (Lv20-23a)A DISGUST LIKE OVEREATING: You indulged & liked the
item but you no longer want it:Your DESIRES have ENDED(KAYTZ)

- (Ex01-12c)FEELING LIKE A THORN(KoTZ) IN ONES SIDE(Cf Nu33-55)

Here is the LIST.
VERSETEXT OF VERSE WITH Kuph-Tzade TRANSLATED as DISGUSTED
Gn27-46aI am DISGUSTED with Canaanite *1
Lv20-23aThe Canaanites had much incest:I,God, am DISGUSTED*2
Nu21-05cWe(The Jews) are DISGUSTED with this Manna Food*3
Nu22-03bMoab was DISGUSTED with Jews because of their Numbers
Ex01-12cThe Jews increased prolifically: Egypt got DISGUSTED*4
COMMENTS

*1 Gn27-46a uses FULL Hebrew form: KTzH NEFESH*11

*2 Lv20-23a: Rashi EXPLICITLY identifies nuances of disgusted:
   -----------------------------------------------------------
Like a person who overate & said I HAVE HAD ENOUGH
   -----------------------------------------------------------

*3 Nu21-05c uses the FULL Hebrew form: KTzH NEFESH*11

*4 There are 2 possible etymologies of Kuph-Tzade
   -Ex01-12c: Rashi says KTzH(Disgusted) comes from KoTz(Thorn)
cf The explicit usage Nu33-55: A THORN IN MY SIDE*11

   -Lv20-23a: Rashi says KTzH(Disgusted) comes from KayTz(End)
It refers to a DISGUST that comes from eg overeating--
having too much of one thing--so the desire for the food
or thing comes to an END(KAYTZ)*12

LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10 Note: Radack explicitly identifies these 4 roots as having
the same meaning. All 4 roots have a KUPH and TZADE
    - Kuph-Tzade-Tzade
    - Kuph-Tzade-Hey
    - Kuph-vav-Tzade
    - Yud-Kuph-Tzade (shares one meaning with Kuph-Vav-Tzade)

*11 There are 5 Rashis on Kuph-Tzade; in two of them Rashi
explains the exact nuance of DISGUST. On Lv20-23a Rashi says
    ------------------------------------------------------
It means DISGUSTING: Like HAVING HAD ENOUGH of eating
    ------------------------------------------------------
In other words KUPH-TZADE means DISGUSTING in those
situations where YOU TRIED THE THING OUT, POSSIBLY
ENJOYED IT, BUT NOW CAN NO LONGER STAND IT.

Rashi points out that technically the full proper phrase
should be Kuph-Tzade Ne-Fesh which literally translates
to MY DESIRES END which would indeed correspond to the
nuance Rashi mentioned of TRYING SOMETHING OUT TILL ONE
HAD ENOUGHT OF IT. As Rashi quickly points out, it is
permissable to elliptically leave out NEFESH

*12 There are 5 Rashis on this word; in two of them Rashi
explains the exact nuance of DISGUST.On Ex01-12c Rashi says
    ----------------------------------------
DISGUSTING is like a THORN IN ONES SIDE
    ----------------------------------------
Compare the explicit use of this Hebrew-English idiom
    in Nu33-55

         REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.Com/other-20.htm
================================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: Dt26-05d We went down to Egypt with A FEW PEOPLE
ENRICHED by Gn46-27: We went down with 70 people

Gn49-04 Reuven PLAYED with fathers BEDS
CONCLUSION: Reuven inteferred with fathers personal
life(ruffled bedspreads); Bible condemns Reuven by
exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do

=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------
Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
			   while DOING ITS WORK

* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
            --------------------------------------------------
Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
	   (EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS

* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
            --------------------------------------------------
Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
	  (EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
(GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols

RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
