VERSE: Gn28-14a

======================= PaRaTZ=PRESS A POINT ====================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Radack in his book of Roots on the root Pay-Resh-Tzade lists
2 meanings: a) Beg b) a break in a wall /to break. Rashi
however cites Ex01-12, THE JEWS EXPANDED, to show that
Pay-Resh-Tzade means EXPANSION. We need not assume that Rashi and
Radack differed: Rather it is preferable to assume they
complemented each other. That is, Rashi was indicating that the
meanings of BEG, BREAK had nuances of EXPANSION. Accordingly we
have suggested the translation: P-R-Tz=TO PRESS A POINT. Hence
PRTz means to a) BEG, b) TO BREAK (Press forcefully), c)EXPAND
(Press outward). This is a proper way to learn early commentaries

BRIEF EXPLANATION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words
the same way a dictionary explains the meaning of words. Rashi
would sometimes explain a word by presenting a UNIFIED meaning
to the root. This UNIFIED meaning adds nuances to the typical
dictionary translation of a word. Thus in the example above
the translation PRESS unifies he meanings of BEG (Press a point)
BREAK (Press forcefully) and EXPAND (Press outward)

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We present verses illustrating the 3 meanings of PRTz. Each
verse is accompanied with a translation, which meaning of PRTz
is used (BEG, PRESS, EXPAND), and the relationship of this
meaning to PRESS(eg BEG=PRESS A POINT). Note the heavy
emphasis throughout on English metaphors. This is consistent
with the theme of my essay PSHAT & DERASH TRADITION WINTER 1980
