VERSE: Gn29-13c
RASHIS COVERED: Gn29-13a Gn29-13b Gn29-13c
======================== Gn29-13c ============================
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the ALIGNMENT,
that is, the word by word comparison, of almost identical
verses. The minor variations between these almost similar
verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We
call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT
-When Rashi identifies two cases from the ALIGNMENT we call
this the Rashi subrule of TWO CASES
-When Rashi infers nuances from the variations between the
almost similar verses (or verse phrases) we call this the
Rashi subrule of NUANCES.
-When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost
identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING.
EXAMPLE Gn29-13
----------------
Both Gn29-13 and Gn24-29:30 describe a situation
where LABAN RAN to meet someone (So the alignment
is on a situation and one word RAN rather than
on the entire verse). Here is a paraphrase of the
ALIGNMENT
---------------------------------------------------------
Gn24-29:30 Laban ran: When he saw the gold & siler he ran
Gn29-13 Laban ran: When he heard the name of Jacob
---------------------------------------------------------
By ALIGNING the above two passage Rashi infers that
- Laban didnt run because a relative had come to town
- Laban did run because he expected monetary gifts
Rashi makes this inference BECAUSE of the ALIGNMENT
and in fact explicitly states that the reason for
his inference is an ALIGNMENT.
Rashi uses the technique of EXAGGERATION
- Laban HUGGED Jacob: Rashi: Looking for gold on him
- Laban KISSED Jacob: Rashi: Looking for gold in his mouth
We can EQUALLY state
-------------------------------------------
He hugged and kissed him to get on his
good side and get him to stay over---
he was certain that gifts would follow
-------------------------------------------
Notice how the UNDERSTANDING of Rashi as
being driven by an ALIGNMENT leads to
alternative interpretations of the verse
which are fully consistent with his and
perhaps more palatable.
LIST309j summarizes this ALIGNMENT.

Gn24-29:30 clearly indicates that he ran
WHEN he saw the bracelets and nose rings,
that is, when he saw money!
So we can transfer this reason to Gn29-13

Laban ran to Jacob BECAUSE he wanted money
