VERSE: Gn30-35b

RASHIS COVERED: Gn32-16a Gn32-16b

=========================== Gn30-35b =========================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment
of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these
almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or
even meaning.

EXAMPLE Gn32-15:16
------------------
The text of Gn32-15:16 is as follows
- 200 Goats 20 TI$
- 200 Female sheep 20 Rams
- 30 Camels & children
- 40 Female cows 10 Oxen
- 20 Donkeys 10 &IR

Notice how FEMALE COWS are mentioned before OXEN. Therefore
from the alignment of the above 2 columns of animal pairs we
infer that
- the TI$ is the Hebrew word for MALE GOAT (Gn30-35b)
- the &IR is the Hebrew word for the MALE DONKEY (Gn32-16b)

From the blatant contrast that CAMELS are mentioned with children
but not with males, we infer that the Camels led a FAMILY LIFE
with a 1:1 male:female ration and with one child per family.

Notice the contrast of COARSENESS vs DISCRETION
- e.g. for goats the Torah mentions a 1:10 male:female ratio--
this is an example of COARSE description

- for camels the Torah mentions the CAMELS and CHILDREN--
this is an example of DISCRETE description.

In general the Torah urges us to moral norms by requiring
behaviors (such as discretion) even towards animals and
inanimate objects

NOTES
-----
*1 CAMELS and CHILDREN implies a FAMILY LIFE. So
CAMELS mated one to one with one child (In contrast
to other animals such as goats which had a 1:10
ratio) Thus the Torah teaches us to be discrete
when talking about modestly behaving people*11

---------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ----------------

*10 Notice the remarkable fact that although ALL THREE
inferences presented in this list come from an
    alignment of Gn32-15:16 nevertheless
    - two of the Rashis occur in Gn32
    - one of the Rashis occurs in Gn30,another chapter

This is typical of Rashi...very often the REASON
for a Rashi does not lie in the verse but in
    another verse

*11 See LIST604a
Notice the contrast of COARSENESS vs DISCRETION
  - e.g. for goats the Torah COARSELY mentions
   a 1:10 male:female ratio--

  - for camels the Torah discretely mentions
  the CAMELS and CHILDREN--
From this we infer that the CAMELS led a family
life--they mated one on one with one child.

The Torah treats these animals discretely by not
mentioning mating ratios but mentioning children

The implication for us is that we should speak
  discretely about modest couples
