VERSE: Gn46-07a

RASHIS COVERED: Gn46-07a Gn46-34a Gn46-34b Gn47-11a

====================== OTHER VERSES ============================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi sometimes enriches a verses meaning by citing OTHER VERSES
which provide more detail. Let us examine some examples
- Gn46-07a says the DAUGHTERS OF HIS SONS
  Rashi gives examples of grandaughters(SERACH,YOCHEVED)
- Gn46-34a Joseph advises family to tone down skills
Rashi cites other verses that Pharoh wanted to use his family
- Gn46-34b says that Egyptians hates Shepards
Rashi explains why: The Egyptians worshipped the sheep
- Gn47-11a mentions Raamsayth
Rashi explains that this was a city in Goshen

TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
---------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE

One way of doing this is to cross reference a
verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives
FURTHER details.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah

Dt26-05 states that
-------------------------------
With only a FEW PEOPLE did the
 Jews go down to Egypt
-------------------------------

FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of
the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is
provided in Gn46.

EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading the Rashi try reading
Gn46 yourself and see if you can
discover the further details.

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi cites Gn46-27
-----------------------------
The total number of people who
came with Jacob to Egypt is 70
-----------------------------

Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES
in this case has explained to us that
the FEW PEOPLE that went down to
Egypt refers to SEVENTY people

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then you
can present the verse in the first column
(eg Dt26-05) and the CHAPTER (but not the verse)
in the 3rd column---e.g. Gn46.

The student is then instructed to discover
the further details. The students solution
can then be compared with Rashis.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We cite former postings on OTHER VERSES and enrich them with
the 4 examples cited above. Placing them in such a context
allows us to further appreciate Rashi

NOTES
-----
*1 Throughout Gn47 it speaks about the Jews coming to Goshen
Then it speaks about Pharoh allowing them to live in Goshen
But then in Gn47-11a it speaks about them living in Raamsayth

Technically perhaps it would be better to classify this as
OTHER VERSES BY CONTRADICTION (Raamsayth vs Goshen) or
OTHER VERSES - TWO ASPEcTS (City Country). The classification
depends on how one initially views the verse.

In the above list we give the SOURCE of all items
(eg Chur came from Kalev; Raamsayth came from Goshen etc)

*2 Gn46-17 states that Serach was Jacobs grandaughter

*3 In the bottom half of the list the OTHER VERSE explains
the REASON for the initial verse

*4 In Gn47-06 it clearly states that Pharoh wanted to hire
   people for his staff.

This is further amplified in 1Sam08-11:21 which clearly
allows a King to force-hire people into his service

Josephs plan was that Jacob and his sons should FAKE IT
They should act that they are only good at sheparding
and then Pharoh would think they are trash and leave
   them alone.

Such a ploy is also used by King David who behaved like
a imbecile--this led the King to live him alone(1S21-16)

As to my calling Jacobs statement a FAKE---well clearly
Gn34 shows how two of his sons conquered a whole city.
If Pharoh knew he would certainly hire them.

Note how we have enriched this OTHER VERSE comment with
   4 other verses

*5 Since the Egyptians worship the sheep therefore
   they hate shepards.
