VERSE: Gn46-07a
RASHIS COVERED: Gn46-07a Gn46-34a Gn46-34b Gn47-11a
OTHER VERSES |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi sometimes enriches a verses meaning by citing OTHER VERSES
which provide more detail. Let us examine some examples
- Gn46-07a says the DAUGHTERS OF HIS SONS
Rashi gives examples of grandaughters(SERACH,YOCHEVED)
- Gn46-34a Joseph advises family to tone down skills
Rashi cites other verses that Pharoh wanted to use his family
- Gn46-34b says that Egyptians hates Shepards
Rashi explains why: The Egyptians worshipped the sheep
- Gn47-11a mentions Raamsayth
Rashi explains that this was a city in Goshen
---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE
One way of doing this is to cross reference a
verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives
FURTHER details.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah
Dt26-05 states that
-------------------------------
With only a FEW PEOPLE did the
Jews go down to Egypt
-------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of
the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is
provided in Gn46.
EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading the Rashi try reading
Gn46 yourself and see if you can
discover the further details.
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi cites Gn46-27
-----------------------------
The total number of people who
came with Jacob to Egypt is 70
-----------------------------
Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES
in this case has explained to us that
the FEW PEOPLE that went down to
Egypt refers to SEVENTY people

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then you
can present the verse in the first column
(eg Dt26-05) and the CHAPTER (but not the verse)
in the 3rd column---e.g. Gn46.
The student is then instructed to discover
the further details. The students solution
can then be compared with Rashis.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We cite former postings on OTHER VERSES and enrich them with
the 4 examples cited above. Placing them in such a context
allows us to further appreciate Rashi |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | OTHER VRSE | DETAILS |
Ex17-10b | Chur | 1Ch2-18:19 | Kalevs son |
Ex35-30a | Chur | 1Ch2-18:19 | Kalevs son |
Ex24-14c | Chur | 1Ch2-18:19 | Kalevs son |
Gn47-11a | Raamsayth | Gn47-04 | City in Goshen*1 |
Gn46-07a | Jacobs grandaughters | Nu27-59 | Yocheved*2 |
-------- | ------------------------ | ---------- | -------------------- |
Gn26-05e | because ABRAHAM OBEYED | Gn22-18 | He offered Isaac*3 |
Gn46-34a | We are shepards | Gn47-06 | Pharoh wants staff*4 |
Gn46-34b | Egypt hates shepards | Ex08-22 | Egyptian god=sheep*5 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Throughout Gn47 it speaks about the Jews coming to Goshen
Then it speaks about Pharoh allowing them to live in Goshen
But then in Gn47-11a it speaks about them living in Raamsayth
Technically perhaps it would be better to classify this as
OTHER VERSES BY CONTRADICTION (Raamsayth vs Goshen) or
OTHER VERSES - TWO ASPEcTS (City Country). The classification
depends on how one initially views the verse.
In the above list we give the SOURCE of all items
(eg Chur came from Kalev; Raamsayth came from Goshen etc)
*2 Gn46-17 states that Serach was Jacobs grandaughter
*3 In the bottom half of the list the OTHER VERSE explains
the REASON for the initial verse
*4 In Gn47-06 it clearly states that Pharoh wanted to hire
people for his staff.
This is further amplified in 1Sam08-11:21 which clearly
allows a King to force-hire people into his service
Josephs plan was that Jacob and his sons should FAKE IT
They should act that they are only good at sheparding
and then Pharoh would think they are trash and leave
them alone.
Such a ploy is also used by King David who behaved like
a imbecile--this led the King to live him alone(1S21-16)
As to my calling Jacobs statement a FAKE---well clearly
Gn34 shows how two of his sons conquered a whole city.
If Pharoh knew he would certainly hire them.
Note how we have enriched this OTHER VERSE comment with
4 other verses
*5 Since the Egyptians worship the sheep therefore
they hate shepards.

DOUBLE VERSE SENTENCES |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Gn46-31:32 is an example of TWO verses forming ONE sentence.
Most Biblical verses are complete sentences. However in very
rare instances TWO verses will form ONE sentence. The
translation of these verses is as follows
-----------------------------------------------------------
- I will go to Pharoh and tell him (as follows)
- - My brothers & father from Canaan came to me
- - And they shepard for they were always shepards
- - and they brought their herds and possessions with them

BRIEF EXPLANATION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain Grammar the same
way modern Grammar books do. Grammar deals with many topics
In this posting we deal with the grammatical rules governing
sentences. Most Biblical verses are complete sentences. However
in certain rare cases TWO Verses form ONE sentence. A list of
examples is provided below

*2 We have here 6 verses forming one sentence.
---Dt10-02 And you should know today that it was not
- your children who saw Gods rebuke, his greatness,
- his big Hand and outstretched Arm,
---Dt10-03 his miracles, and great deeds that he did
- to Egypt, and to Pharoh their king and, to his nation
-----Dt10-04 AND THAT which He did to the Egyptian Army..
-----Dt10-05 AND THAT which He did for you in the Desert
-----Dt10-06 AND THAT which He did in the Korach rebellion
-Dt10-07 RATHER it is you yourself which have seen
these things
For translation of the Hebrew KI as RATHER in Dt10-07
and for treating the repeating keyword THAT like a
foonote see footnote *11
*3
---Dt04-09 Watch yourself and watch your soul alot lest
you forget the things you (yourself saw) and lest you
forget your whole life; and you will tell them to
your children and to your grandchildren --
---Dt04-10 the day that you stood before God your Lord
in the desert when God said to me (Moses) gather
the congregation and I will tell them my words(the
decalogue/10 commandments) in order that they learn
to revere me all the days which they are alive on the
land; and they will also teach their children
*4

----------------------------------Ataroth
----------------------------------Aroayr
--Nu32-35-------------------------Atroth Shofan
----------------------------------Yazayr
----------------------------------Yagbehah
--Nu32-36-------------------------Bayth Nimrah
----------------------------------Bayth Haran
-----------------------[built for] fortification & grazing
For a further defense of this perspective see *12
*5
Gn01-29 And God said
--------I(God) give
----------------To you
-----------------------------------all seed bearing grass
-----------------------------------& all fruit bearing trees
----------------To you to eat

-----------------------My sons scent is like a field
Gn01-28----------------& (so) will God give you[r fields]:
----------------------------from heavenly dew &

----------------------------abundant grain and wine
Note the introductory phrase AND GOD SAID: SEE
in verse Gn01-27: This gives credibility to this
interpretation that everything is one long blessing
For further elaboration see *13
*7
Dt01-30 & I(Moses) said: God will fight for you
------- the same way He did
---------------IN Egypt, in front of your sight
Dt01-31--------& IN the Desert, which you saw

The keyword IN helps link the two verses together.
*8 --Dt11-10 For the land which you are coming to is not like
Egypt where your agriculture depended on canals from the Nile
--Dt11-11 The land you are coming to is mountainous...you
obtain water from rain
--Dt11-13 It is a land that God constantly watches; Gods Eyes
are on it the whole year
--Dt11-14 and this (obtaining rain) will happen when you
listen to Gods commandments which I command you this day
to love God and to serve him with all your heart and soul
--Dt11-15 (It is only) THEN that God will give you rain in
its season
For other comments on these verses see footnote *14

Dt02-28 ---------------------allow me to buy food/water
Dt02-29 ---------------------the way [Edom sold me food]
---------------------until I pass your land
For further elaboration see footnote *15
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 There are two Rashis on these verses.
Dt02-16a comments on the fact that the two verses form
one sentence
Dt02-17a comments on the fact that it uses the verb
SPOKE vs CITE.
We have only dealt with Dt02-16a in this posting. The
other Rashi will be dealt with at another time.
*11 Take note of 2 items in our translation:
RASHI USES REPEATING KEYWORDS AS BULLETS
----------------------------------------
First note how the repeating keyword THAT
functions as a BULLET facilitating
the reading of this long sentence.
For a posting showing many examples of REPEATING
KEYWORDS functioning as BULLETS see
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/18-01d.htm)
RASHI TRANSLATES THE HEBREW WORD, KI, as RATHER
-----------------------------------------------
Also note that Rashi translated the Hebrew word KI in
Dt10-07 as RATHER. In fact the Hebrew word KI has
7 meanings.
For the 7 meanings of KI see the posting
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ki-11.htm
*12
The whole chapter Nu32-16:42 revolves around a deal
that the Gadites made with Mosheh
---the Gadites would inherit the transjordan
---the Gadites would build cities for fortification/grazing
---the Gadite herds/children would remain in these cities
---the Gadites would fight for Israel with everyone else
This 4 fold contract is repeated in the following verses
* Nu32-16:19 Initial Offer by the Gadites
* Nu32-20:24 Initial Acceptance by Moses
* Nu32-25:27 Confirmation of deal by Gadites
* Nu32-28:42 Confirmation of deal in presence of Elders
So we see that our interpretation of Nu32-34:36 as referring
to creation of fortifications/grazing is consistent with
the whole chapter.
Indeed, we can go further and break up Nu32-28:42 which deals
with the finalizing of the deal as follows:
Nu32-28:30 Moses says: The Gadites promised to fight for Israel
Nu32-31:32 Gadites respond: We agree
Nu32-33 Moses gives them the land they were promised
Nu32-34:36 The Gadites build cities for their families/grazing
In conclusion this Rashi is an excellent example of the
neglected principle of OVERALL structure.
*13 We have interpreted the verses as follows
Gn01-27 AND HE SAID: SEE:
-----------------------My sons scent is like a field
Gn01-28----------------& (so) will God give you[r fields]:
----------------------------from heavenly dew &
----------------------------from rich earth &
----------------------------abundant grain and wine
Chazal see a cycle here:
--First Jews behave nicely (They smell like fresh fields)
--then God gives them fresh fields
--and then they are well to do & they smell like fresh fields
--and then God gives them fresh fields etc
Note how this observation of cyclicity is not SOMETHING
separate from the simple meaning of the text but rather
is a LOGICAL CONSEQUENCE of the simple meaning. This is
the true way to learn Midrash--the Midrash is ONE with
the simple meaning of the text.
*14 NOTE: Dt10-13 does not begin IF you will listen then...
Rather ot begins: AND THIS (The above) will happen
WHEN you listen. It is the Hebrew word VHAYAH (and
this will happen) which prompts Rashi to connect the
verses.
Thus Dt10-12, Dt10-13, Dt10-14 form
a GENERAL-PARTICULAR-GENERAL form stating that God
gives rain WHEN you observe commandments; it is THEN
that God gives rain.
For further examples of the
GENERAL PARTICULAR GENERAL Style, one of the 13 style
rules of Rabbi Ishmael see
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/exampe7.htm
*15 The Sifsay Chachamim, a commentary on Rashi makes the
following points
--It explicitly says in Nu20-14 that Moses requested
permission from Edom, THE BROTHER OF ISRAEL, to
pass thru the land.
& Edom is explicitly identified with Esauv the Brother
of Jacob in Gn36-01
Thus the Nu20 story links to the Dt02 story.
--But it explicitly says in Nu20 that
* the Jews offered to BUY food (Nu20-19)
* the Jews also requested use of roads (Nu20-19)
* Edom refused to allow ROAD USE(Nu20-20 & Nu20-21)
--If we couple this with the statement here (Dt02-29)
------------------------------------------------
LET ME PASS AND BUY FOOD LIKE EDOM DID FOR ME
------------------------------------------------
--then we conclude (based on the two sets of explicit
verses) that
* Edom did sell water & food
* Edom did not allow Road use
This uses the Rabbi Ishmael rule of resolving
contradictory verses.
We see that Rashi is also using the technique
of OTHER VERSES. The two Rashis in Dt02-26:29 are
based on the OTHER VERSES in Numbers 20 Here is how
the Dt02 verses would read. Notice the alignment
-------------------------------------------------
Dt02-26 ---And Moses requested from the Sichonites
Dt02-27 -------------Allow me to use your roads
Dt02-28 ---------------------allow me to buy food/water
Dt02-29 ---------------------the way [Edom sold me food]
---------------------until I pass your land
--------------------------------------------------
In conclusion Rashi(Dt02-29b) says that
* Dt02-27 and Dt02-29 are linked
------------------------------------------
Let me use your roads till I pass thru the land
------------------------------------------
* Rashi (Dt02-29a) similarly says
Dt02-28 and Dt02-29 are linked
--------------------------------------------
Allow me to buy food water like Edom sold me
--------------------------------------------
Rashi bases his interpretation
on the OTHER VERSES and the

RASHI RULE USED: GRAMMARr
#*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2002, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
VERSE: Gn47-13b
L-A-H means EXHAUSTED |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Gn47-13 should be translated
-- And Egypt got EXHAUSTED (seeking food) from the famine
Here the Hebrew root Lamed-Aleph-Hey should be translated
as EXHAUSTED. In reviewing this verse we will find an
interesting 4 way controversy between Rashi-Rav-Sadia and
Radack and Ibn Ezra. However it will appear reasonable to
unify these views.
-------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: GRAMMARr
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: CONJUGATION
-------------------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain grammar the
same way modern dictionaries explain grammar. One very
important function of grammar is to explain conjugation
of verbs. Rashi will especially comment on roots with
several weak letters as the rules for conjugating these
roots are obscure
TODAYS LISTS
------------
We present two lists.
The first list is grammatical and derived from Al Silbermans
Grammatical Form Konkordance---we show roots obeying this
conjugation form*10
The 2nd list is semantical--we show why Rashi and Rav
Sadia suggested that the roots Lamed-Aleph-Hey and
Lamed-Hey-Hey are both the same. This will unify the
appraches of Radack Rashi and Rav Sadia
Here is the first list:
These are the roots
that have the form VaTayTaH (Patach-Tzaray-Patach) |
ROOT | MEANING | VERSE | COMMENTS/EXPLANATION |
Y L C | walk | Gn24-61 | Root begins with YUD |
Y R D | descend | 2S22-10 | Root begins with YUD |
Y D A | know | Gn04-17 | Root begins with YUD |
----- | -------- | ------- | ---------------------------------------- |
T A H | wander | Gn21-14 | Last letter=hey; 2nd letter = Guttural*1 |
L A H | weary | Gn47-13 | See next entry--is the root LAH or LHH? |
----- | -------- | ------- | ---------------------------------------- |
L H H | weary | Gn47-13 | See next entry--is the root LAH or LHH? |
K A A | Dislodge | Gn32-26 | Last 2 root letters are identical*2 |
R A A | hurt | Gn21-11 | Last 2 root letters are identical |
K L L | belittle | Gn16-04 | Last 2 root letters are identical |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 So TWO root letters are weak. There are very few examples
of these Biblical roots--there are not enough cases to
justify ONE UNIQUE APPROACH. Hence we have controversy
on the correct grammatical form.
*2 There is controversy on this root.
Rashi ingeniously has two roots Y-K-A and K-A-A. One means
DISLODGE while the other means HANG (This is ingenious
since other authorities say they are the same root with
2 meanings). See the following posting for details
http://www.RashiYomi.com/nu25-03b.htm
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Job17-07 and Ez19-07 are two other examples but were not
brought in the above list. According to Silbermans
Grammatical form Konkordance these are the only 11 examples
| |
L A H means WEARY |
The Roots L-A-H and L-H-H occur rarely. There are only
2 instances of L-H-H and only about a dozen of L-A-H.
The list below shows that L-A-H means
- exhausted
- weary
- burdensome
The two verses with the root L-H-H fit into this pattern.
Hence, Rashi and Rav Sadia suggest a unified meaning to
these two grammatical roots(L-H-H and L-A-H have the
same meaning).By contrast Radack and Ibn Ezra think that
L-H-H means CRAZY while L-A-H means WEARY.
Here are the list of examples. Do you agree with Rashi
and Rav Sadia that one can translate all verses as
meaning WEARY or do you think that we must follow Radacks
approach that L-H-H means CRAZY. |
VERSE | ROOT | MEANING of VERSE WITH ROOT L-A-A or L-A-H capped |
Jb04-02 | L-A-H | We WEARY of trying to talk to you |
Gn19-11 | L-A-H | They got TIRED of trying to find the door |
Mi06-03 | L-A-H | How have I BURDENED you |
Ex18-08 | L-A-H | All the BURDEN they experienced in Egypt |
------- | ------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
Gn47-13 | L-H-H | Egypt got WORN OUT from the FAMINE |
Pr26-18 | L-H-H | Double crossers are like bowing till FATIGUE*1 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 This is a difficult verse Here is a reasonable translation
-----------------------------------------------------
A person who deceives his friend but says I WAS JOKING
is like
a person who practices shooting arrows, fire and deadly
weapons till they are FATIGUED (and then says he wasnt
trying to hurt anyone)
-----------------------------------------------------
The point is that both these people are dangerous
and should not be trusted In other words it is irrelevant
if they were INTENDING to hurt someone--what they are
doing is so dangerous that we can judge them by their
actions not their intentions

REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)
==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================
* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
--------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
- Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)
* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols
RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
