==================== Lv01-02d ===================================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain the
meaning of words the same way a dictionary
explains the meaning of words.

One vehicle of word meaning presented by Rashi
is the two letter root theory. As everyone
knows the Hebrew language is based on 3 letter
roots which are CONJUGATED in various ways.

For example the root Sh-M-R can mean,
I WATCHED (ShMaRTi), YOU WILL WATCH (TiShMoR)
etc based on conjugation.

In addition to the 3 letter theory Rashi believed
in the 2 Letter root theory--that is, 3 letter
roots govern GRAMMATICAL conjugation while
2 letter roots govern MEANING. Every 3 letter
root has a meaning that is determined by the
meanings of the 1 and 2 letter roots comprising
the root.

For example: The letter NUN denotes
- INTENSITY,
- ALOT, or
- CONSEQUENCE OF.
(The actual meaning of the Hebrew word NUN
means DESCENDANT so that DESCENDANT = CONSEQUENCE OF
sounds right. The lists below illustrates this.)

EXAMPLE
-------
- A-M-N, NURSING, is a CONSEQUENCE OF(Nun) MOTHERHOOD( A-M)
- G-R-N, the GRANARY, is LOTS OF(Nun) HARVESTED ITEMS(G-R)
- S-R-N, a GOVERNOR, is an INTENSE(Nun) example of LEADERSHIP(s-r)

EXAMPLE Lv01-02d Lv01-02e etc
-----------------------------
Both the Hebrew letter M and the Hebrew word MN both mean
FROM. MN would mean an INTENSE FROM. We would translate it
loosely as FROM SOME OF-- for example,
- FROM non-borderline cases
- FROM non-misfits

There are about 6 dozen occurrences of MN in Leviticus.
Curiously Rashi only comments on half a dozen.

EXAMPLE Lv01-14
---------------
- BIBLE: If you offer FROM SOME OF the birds to God
- RASHI: But not from MISFIT birds ... for example, birds
that have torn limbs.

NOTES
-----
*1 This is onomatopoeia (word meaning by sound)
Another (famous) Hebrew example is BAK-BOOK for
BOTTLE (Water coming out of a bottle sounds
   like BAK-BOOK BAK BOOK)

*2 A-G-R is said to mean GATHERING but more specifically
refers to HARVESTING (eg. Dt28-39 -- you will not drink
   or harvest wine)

*3 D-Sh-A refers to HERBIAGE -- minor field growth.
A PLUMP/FAT person could be said that
   --------------------------------------
HIS field (stomach) IS GROWING WILDLY
   --------------------------------------

Note that D-Sh-N does frequently mean FAT

Also note that FIELD can refer to STOMACH
   (Songs07-03)

*4 Cf Ex21-18 If men FIGHT and one hits the other with a
   stone or a fist....

*5 Just like the English metaphor for TESTING/INVESTIGATION
-- LETS LOOK INTO IT --

*6 The ChShN was one of the eight PRIESTLY garments.
The ChShN held the URIM vTUMIM -- these were
lettered ornaments with prophetic capacity. When
the High Priest asked a question of God he would
get the answer by having a vision of the ChShN
with the letters answering his question lit up on
   the URIM.

Hence the ChShN containing the URIM vTUMIM enabled
the High Priest to FEEL OUT (ChSh) a case -- compare
the similar English FEELING OUT A CASE

*7 The word SRN refers both to the GOVERNOR as well
as to the STATE over which he governs (Cf Joshua 13:3)
SR by itself refers to any leader. Hence GOVERNOR
(Srn) is an INTENSE (N) Leader (SR) or the PINACLE
   of LEADERSHIP

------------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------

*10 Some scholars interpret a terminal NUN as indicating
LESS -- but it should be clear from this example --
YRVN vs RV -- that a terminal NUN indicates INTENSITY
    (DISPUTE - FIGHT)

NOTES
-----
*1 Our basic thesis is as follows
   - MN means FROM SOME (vs M which means FROM)
   - This interpretation (FROM SOME) is consistent with usage of NUN
   - The basic idea is to EXCLUDE the class you are taking from
   - So the GENERAL idea is to EXCLUDE misfits/sinners
   - The Talmud then gives SPECIFICITY to this general idea
   - The Talmudic details may be subject to debate
See footnote *2 for further details

*2 We can see a delicate blend between Rav Hirsch, Malbim and
   this email list.
   - Malbim introduced the general idea that MN means FROM SOME
   - The contribution of this email list is to find a nifty
English translation (FROM SOME) which SPONTANEOUSLY
     suggests the Malbims idea
   - Rav Hirsch focused on the Talmudic details and associations.
For example CATTLE are more active while ANIMALS are more
docile. Rav Hirsch points out that ANIMALS are more
likely for sexual sins while CATTLE are more likely for
murder. Hence the Talmud limits IDOLATRY from CATTLE
and SEXUALLY SINNING ANIMALS from the word ANIMAL.

However brilliant this analysis may be it is important
to emphasize that the basic idea is that
     - MN means FROM SOME which connotes EXCLUSION
     - Hence we dont take from the MISFITS and SINNERS
     - The Talmud in each specific instance however, associates
those misfits most likely to be associated with that animal
class (e.g. SWEATY from GOATS, MURDERERS from CATTLE,
       BESTIALITY from ANIMALS)
     - But the basic idea is that EACH OCCURRENCE of MIN
       excludes SOMETHING.

*3 The TEENAGE years of these birds (doves etc) occur when
   the wings begin to golden.
