VERSE: Lv05-02c

Lv05-02:03 speaks about a person who became ritually impure thru
contact with a dead body or one of the other causes of impurity
The verses conclude that if he committed a sin in unawareness
then he must bring a sacrifice. The verse says IF ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Lv05-02 & HE WAS UNAWARE & He was impure & Was guilty
Lv05-03 & he was unaware & didn't know & was guilty
                                *1 *2
-----------------------------------------------------------------
*1 The repeated phrase HE WAS UNAWARE suggests TWO types of UNAWARENESS
EITHER He was unaware HE WAS IMPURE **or**
OR He was unaware of something else( eg HE FORGOT HE WAS ENTERING THE TEMPLE)

*2 We interpret this extra phrase as giving two conditions
HE WAS IMPURE and HE WAS GUILTY.Let us first show
two methods of using extra sentence clauses.

Extra sentence clauses can either CLARIFY or ADD For example

IN THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES THE EXTRA CLAUSE ONLY CLARIFIES
--------------------------------------------------------
(2a) "I forgot my liscence & incurred guilt "

Since driving without a liscense is forbidden the word
"guilty" simply CLARIFIES that forgetting the liscense
      made the person guilty

      By contrast

IN THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES THE EXTRA CLAUSE ADDS A CONDITION
----------------------------------------------------------
(2b) "I drove while sleepy & incurred guilt"

It is not forbidden to drive while sleepy. Thus the phrase
"& incurred guilt" ADDS---in addition to driving while
sleepy I went and did something I shouldn't have done(like
drive to fast or go thru a red light etc).

Some further examples of this CLARIFY vs ADD distinction
      are as follows

(2c) IN THESE EXAMPLES THE SECOND SENTENCE clarifies THE FIRST
        ---------------------------------------------------------
I forgot my lisence & incurred guilt
        I had a fever & became sick
I invited the couple over & had an anniversary party

IN THESE EXAMPLES THE SECOND SENTENCE adds TO THE FIRST
        -------------------------------------------------------
I drove while sleepy & incurred guilt
I eat alot of salt & became sick
I checked their wedding date & had an anniversay party

Hence if the Biblical sentence says
"And he was unaware AND he was impure AND he incurred guilt"
Rashi interprets the extra sentences as ADDING

"The person FORGOT his impurity AND IN ADDITION
"Did something forbidden (eat holy objects;enter the Temple..)

This concludes the basic explanation of the text and includes
comments of Sifsay Chachamim, Ramban and Malbim. See the main
posting The above interpretation is due to Rabbi Ishmael. Rabbi
Akiva interprets *1 and *2 above differently.
