SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi will very often take a verse whose
meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence
to the verse. We call this the SPREADSHEET
method since SPREADSHEETS are very often
used to derive consequences of otherwise
understood data. We also classify Rashis
as using the SPREADSHEET method when Rashi
gives COMPUTATIONAL or GEOMETRIC diagrams
to clarify the meaning of the verse. In summary
the SPREADSHEET method refers to Rashis that comment on
a) Verse consequence
b) Computational explanation
c) Geometric explanation

EXAMPLE: Lv25-47:54
-----------------------------------------------------
Lv25-47:54 discusses a Jew sold to a non-Jew
because of poverty. The Jew (or any of his
relatives) may REDEEM him. The redemption is
on a prorated linearly based on the number of
years left to the Jubilee.

We first illustrate this idea using a simple
SPREADSHEET example. We then CITE the verses
and insert the Rashis in CAPS. Our main point
is that ALL RASHI IS DOING is CLARIFYING THE
SPREADSHEET.

First  the SPREADSHEET EXAMPLE. Suppose
in year 45 of the Jubilee a Jewish person
sells himself to a non Jew for $100,000.
What is the redemption schedule
-----------------------------------------------------
If redemption is in year Then redemption payment is
-------------------------- --------------------------
Year 45                    Full 100,000
Year 46                    80,000
Year 47                    60,000
Year 48                    40,000
Year 49                    20,000
Year 50                    0
-----------------------------------------------------

Here we see the point Rashi is trying to convey:
-----------------------------------------------
Redemption uses a prorated linear descent method
based on remaining years till the Jubilee.
That is each year is assigned the same worth
------------------------------------------------

Next---since we have already clarified the full
law, we cite the Verses and insert the Rashi
comments in caps. As should be clear, all Rashi
is doing is clarifying the SPREADSHEET.

Lv25-47:54 states
-------------------------------------------
And if a sojourner or stranger becomes rich by you,
and your brother who dwells by him becomes poor,
and sells himself to the stranger or sojourner by you,
or to the offspring of the stranger’s family;
---
After he is sold he may be redeemed again;
(RASHI:HE MAY BE REDEEMED EVEN AT TIME OF SALE
FOR THE FULL PRICE HE JUST PAID(100,000 at 45))
- one of his brothers may redeem him;
- Either his uncle,
- or his uncle’s son, may redeem him,
- or any who is near of kin to him of his family may redeem him;
- or if he is able, he may redeem himself.
---
And he shall reckon with him who bought him
- FROM the year that he was sold to him
- TO the year of jubilee;
and the price of his sale shall be
-
according to the number of years,
according to the time of a hired servant
shall it be with him.
(RASHI: JUST AS A WORKERS HIRE IS LINEAR(EQUAL
AMOUNTS FOR EACH DAY, MONTH OR YEAR) SO TO
THE SLAVE'S HIRE IS PRORATED ON A LINEAR BASIS)
-
-If there are yet many years,
 RASHI: MANY YEARS LEFT TO THE JUBILEE
 [SO EG IF HE HAS 5 YEARS LEFT HE PAYS 100,000
 IF EG HE HAS 4 YEARS LEFT HE PAYS 80000]
-according to them

-he shall give again the
-price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for.
-
-And if there remain but few years
-to the year of jubilee,
-then he shall count with him,
-and according to his years shall
 RASHI: AS I HAVE EXPLAINED ABOVE
 IF HE SOLD HIMSELF FOR 5 YEARS AT 100,000
 THEN HE PAYS 80,000 IN YEAR 4, 60,000 IN YEAR 3....
-he give him again the price of his redemption.
-
And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him;
and the other shall not rule with rigor over him in your sight.
-
And if he is not redeemed in these years,
then he shall go out in the year of jubilee,
both he, and his children with him.
-----------------------------------------------------------

LIST690u summarizes the above argument.

thought it clearer and more realistic to use
a $100,000 sale for 5 years)
