VERSE: Nu03-09a

RASHIS COVERED: Nu03-09a Gn33-03a Dt29-28a Gn37-12a Nu09-10a

===================== Nu03-09a =================================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The BULLET method refers both to
    - use of PARAGRAPH structure to indicate content
    - use of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE etc to indicate meaning

The BULLET method seeks Biblical analogies equivalant to
the modern methods of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE....

There are several instances where Biblical words are
DOTTED on top. Rashi, following the Talmud, perceives
this DOTTING as EQUIVALANT to the modern method of
a LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT. A LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT indicates
    - an idea which had some validity
    - but parts of it are invalid/missing(hence the STRIKEOUT)

EXAMPLE 1 -- Nu03-09a
---------------------
    So when the verse says ESAUV HUGGED AND ---KISSED--- JACOB;
with the word ---KISSED--- dotted, Rashi states
    -----------------------------------------------
It is known that Esauv hated Jacob. But at that
moment Esauv forgot himself and KISSED Jacob.
Thus the KISS was PHYSICALLY there but not
    EMOTIONALLY there.
    -----------------------------------------------

Note how Rashi interprets the DOTTING as indicating
    LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT and SOMETHING MISSING.

EXAMPLE 2 -- Gn33-03a
---------------------
BIBLE: Moses and --AARON-- counted the Levites

RASHI: AARON is DOTTED/STRIKEOUTED indicating something
missing--he wasnt counted among the Levites

EXAMPLE 3 -- Dt29-28a
---------------------
BIBLE: Private sins are punished by God; but public sins
(even if committed by individuals) result in punishment
of the Jews and their --CHILDREN--

RASHI: The word CHILDREN is DOTTED/STRIKEOUTED indicating
something missing. In fact the punishment of the community
for the public sins of individuals did not take place till
the Jews reaccepted the convenant in the times of Joshua.

EXAMPLE 4 - Gn37-12a
--------------------
BIBLE: The brothers travelled to shepard the SHEEP in Schem

RASHI: Their real goal was not to do their job(sheparding)
but to have a good time for themselves. Hence the word
SHEEP is DOTTED indicating something missing--they did
go to shepard the SHEEP but true intent was missing since
they went for themselves.

EXAMPLE 5 - Nu09-10a
--------------------
BIBLE: A person who is FAR AWAY will make Passover in month 2

RASHI: The word FAR AWAY is dotted---he doesnt have to be
ABSOLUTELY far away; but rather as long as he couldnt get
to the Temple court for the slaughtering--as long as he couldnt
so get, he observes the 2nd Passover.

====================================================================
VERSE Text of verse(Dotted word is CAPPED) What is missing
======== ==================================== ======================
Gn33-03a Esauv hugged Jacob and KISSED him No real love*11
Nu03-39a Moses & AARON censussed the Levites Aaron not counted*1
Dt29-28a We/CHILDREN punished for open sins After Joshua*2
Gn37-12a brothers went to shepard the SHEEP Went for themselves*3
Nu09-10a a FAR AWAY person observes Pesach 2 Couldnt get to Tmpl*4

NOTES
-----
*1 That is even though Aaron was a Priest and hence from the
tribe of Levi he wasnt counted among the Levites (indicating
his special status) (So AARON was MISSING from the census
and hence the word is DOTTED)

*2 Joshua renewed the convenant by assembling the Jews--
publicly blessing those who followed the convenant and
publicly cursing those who violated it. Only after this
convenant renewal was the Jewish community punished as
a whole for the publicly committed sins of individuals

Again the DOTTEDNESS indicates something missing--the
rule given is not effective immediately but only after
   a while.

*3 So their SHEPARDING OF THE SHEEP is missing something --
intent; their real purpose was to go for themselves to
   have a good time

*4 So the FAR AWAY is missing something...it doesnt have
to be ACTUALLY FAR AWAY but only as long as he couldnt
get to the Temple court in time for the slaughtering

----------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES ----------------------

*10 The BULLET method refers both to
    - use of PARAGRAPH structure to indicate content
    - use of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE etc to indicate meaning

The BULLET method seeks Biblical analogies equivalant to
the modern methods of BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINE....

There are several instances where Biblical words are
DOTTED on top. Rashi, following the Talmud, perceives
this DOTTING as EQUIVALANT to the modern method of
a LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT. A LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT indicates
    - an idea which had some validity
    - but parts of it are invalid/missing(hence the STRIKEOUT)

    (Continued in *11)

*11 So when the verse says ESAUV HUGGEST AND ---KISSED--- JACOB;
with the word ---KISSED--- dotted, Rashi states
    -----------------------------------------------
It is known that Esauv hated Jacob. But at that
moment Esauv forgot himself and KISSED Jacob.
Thus the KISS was PHYSICALLY there but not
    EMOTIONALLY there.
    -----------------------------------------------

Note how Rashi interprets the DOTTING as indicating
    LEFTOVER STRIKEOUT and SOMETHING MISSING.

Furthermore note how this example illustrates that
what appears to be homiletic and Midrashic is in
reality pure peshat--simple meaning. For to assert
that DOTS/STRIKEOUT means that SOMETHING is missing
is a SIMPLE MEANING of the text similar what is done
    in modern literature.

In passing: Rashi had several competing opinions to
select from--he chose that interprettion which was most
consistent with the idea of DOTTING meaning MISSING SOMETHING
