------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE: Nu05-13y
RULE: There are two Hebrew words for DENIAL---LO and AYN.
--AYN denotes a NEGATION but IMPLIES exceptions.
EXAMPLES
--------
(1) Gn37-24 "Jacobs sons threw Joseph into a pit and water
was NOT IN IT" RASHI: but scorpions and snakes WERE IN IT*1
(2) Lv13-31 Regarding an impure BALD SPOT it says "And black
here was NOT IN IT--RASHI: then he is ritually impure"--but if
the bald spot HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD black hair it would be pure
(3) Nu35-27 "If someone killed a person-who-murdered-thru-
negligent action then BLOOD IS NOT ON HIM"-RASHI: but it is
nevertheless prohibited.
(4) Gn05-24 "Chanoch walked a Godly life AND HE WAS NO MORE
for God had taken him"-RASHI: the phrase AND HE WAS NO MORE means
he did not die of OLD AGE but he did DIE of Middle age.
NOTES
-----
*1 There are other proofs of this statement. For example
the sentence has a GENERAL PARTICULAR form. "THE PIT WAS
EMPTY" (General statement) "IT HAD NO WATER" (Particular)
RabbiIshmael's rules of style suggest in the GENERAL-PARTICULAR
form that we cannot generalize the PARTICULAR FORM--it was
only water that it did not have--but it did have other
things common to pits.
