VERSE: Nu05-15c

RASHIS COVERED: Nu05-15c Nu05-15d Lv05-11a

======================= Nu05-15c ========================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The REST (MINCHAH) offerings are plant sacrifices that
consist of
-- flour - symbolizing our basic nourishment in life
-- oil - symbolizing opulence--non-basic needs
-- frankincense - symbolizing satisfaction

The poor sin offering (Lv05) and the suspected adulteress
sin offering (Nu05) are both Biblically prohibited from
having oil or frankincense since they symbolize OPULENCE
and SATISFACTION and this contradicts the spirit of a
sin offering (SINNERS cannot have satisfaction and cannot
appreciate opulence)*1

Verses with symbolism of OIL, INCENSE, FLOUR

NOTES
-----
*1 A famous Rav Hirsch on Lv05 notes the emphasis
   in the verse
   ----------------------------------------------
The poor sin offering does not get frankincense
BECUASE it is a sin offering (not because it
   is poor!)

=================== LIST975a =============================

For a complete study of the symbolic method see our
essay http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm which presents
in a compact form Rav Hirschs symbolism.

This list approach towards symbolism was developed by
him in his commentary.

In the verses below OIL/FAT (S-M-N) and FRANKINCENSE
are symbolic of OPULENCE and SAIETY*10

SS03-06 Stately like a smoke column--with Myrr/FRANKINCENSE
SS04-06 I seek the MYRR mountains and INCENSE hills

--------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES -------------------

*10 Our approach has been broad and mature based on
lists of verses. Simply: OIL/FAT means OPULENCE
and FRANKINCENSE means SAIETY. No one can deny
this. But why then does Rashi say

    -------------------------------------------
Why no OIL? Because OIL is used to make OIL
LAMPS which give LIGHT while the suspected
    adulteress sinned in DARKNESS
    -------------------------------------------

Did Rashi really approach the symbolism this way?
Did he avoid all the above verses? I however think
the proper approach is to maintain
    - Rashi did hold by the above lists
    - Rashi did believe that oil symbolizes opulence
    - BUt Rashi gave a cute pun--oil=light/adultery=dark
    - Rashis goals were NOT to explain; rather Rashis
goals were to make something cute and punchy
so that people would remember the overall meaning

In arguing that Rashi took this approach I am
    trying to harmonize
    - the text of Rashi
    - the great lists of verses supporting Hirschs symbols
I think the only was to harmonize these two is maintain
that Rashi did believe in the list approach but gave
punchy contrasts (light-dark) to make sure that things
    were remembered.

The reader is invited to solve the contrast of
Rashis language and the lists above in his own
    manner.
