VERSE: Nu07-02a

RASHIS COVERED: Nu07-02a Nu07-15a Nu07-10a Nu07-10b

================================ Nu07-10a ===========================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Some Rashi comments deal with FORMATTING.
Modern authors FORMAT using such techniques as
BULLETS, PARAGRAPHING, BOLD, ITALICS and UNDERLINE.
The Biblical Author achieved these effects but thru
different means.

For example a modern author might hilight distinct
items using BULLETS. The Biblical Author hilights
distinct items using REPEATING KEYWORDS.

We call this the Rashi rule of FORMATTING with the Rashi
subrule of KEYWORDS AS BULLETS

Rashi could also infer from the general PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE
(without any keywords). We call this the the Rashi rule of
FORMATTING with the Rashi subrule of PARAGRAPHS.

EXAMPLE Nu07-02a
-------------------------
Nu07-02 states
--------------------------------------------
The LEADERS of Israel offered
The HEADS of Households
-THEY are the LEADERS of Israel
-THEY are the CHIEFS OF STAFF(On the army)
-----------------------------------------------------

There is much to comment on in this verse (Such as
the repetition etc.).But Rashi, I believe, comments
on the the repeating KEYWORD, THEY, which creates a
BULLET effect. Rashi states
---------------------------------------
The TWO BULLETS create an emphasis on
two aspects of the Tribal leaders.

-(BULLET 1) They were the Leaders in Egypt (Ex05-14:19)
(Which took the brunt for non-production)

-(BULLET 2) They were also the Chiefs of Staff
(Who took charge of the COUNTINGS of army members)
 (Nu01)
---------------------------------------

Without the BULLETS I would simply say that the
repetition is stylistic and not referring to anything
specific. It is the repeating Keywords which create
the BULLET atmosphere and drive Rashi to interpret
each one distinctly.

LIST120n below summarizes this argument.

EXAMPLE Nu07-15a
-------------------------
Nu07-15a states
------------------------------
- Oxen ONE, from the herd
- Rams ONE
- Lambs ONE
------------------------------

Notice how the ONE for OXEN is out of sequence
It should be at the end of the line like so
------------------------------
- Oxen from the herd ONE
- Rams ONE
- Lambs ONE
------------------------------

A further point is that the ONE is
an attribute of OX FROM THE HERD. That is
the word ONE should not break up the
phrase OX FROM THE HERD
That is, it should have said
- - -- - - - - - - - - - - -
ox from the herd, ONE
- - -- - - - - - - - - - - -

vs
- - -- - - - - - - - - - - -
ox ONE from the herd
- - -- - - - - - - - - - - -

Rashi comments
---------------------------------
Since the ONE is out of sequence
it means UNIQUE (ONE of a KIND)
rather than numerically one
Thus the verse reads as so
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- UNIQUE oxen from the herd
- Rams ONE
- Lambs ONE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
---------------------------------

NOTE: A traditional approach
to Rashi sees Rashi as BOTHERED
or ASKING QUESTIONS about EXTRA
WORDS (After all, OX is singular
and hence the ONE is unnecessary!)
But such an approach is incorrect---
for many objects are enumerated as ONE
and this is simply a matter of Biblical
style---there is no indication for example
that ONE in the following verse means SPECIAL/UNIQUE
------------------------------------------------
Lv26-26 10 women will bake in ONE OVEN but they
will take it out in clumps (because the bread
will fall apart)
------------------------------------------------

LIST120O below summarizes this argument.

EXAMPLE 3 Nu07-10a Nu07-10b
---------------------------
The structure/contentof Nu07-03:12 is as follows
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ITEM LEADERS BRING ITEM GOD SAYS ACCEPT MOSES ACCEPTS ITEM
---------- ------------------- --------------- ------------------
Gifts Nu07-03 Nu07-04:05 Nu07-06:09
Offerings Nu07-10 Nu07-11 Nu07-12
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The consequent Rashi comments are obvious. Rashi states
-------------------------------------------------
a) The princes brought both GIFTS and OFFERINGS
b) In each case the bringing had 3 distinct stages
b1) Leaders bring
b2) God orders to accept
b3) Moses accepts
Moses did not accept the item immediately without
Gods approval (Perhaps Rashi had in mind the
voluntary UNAUTHORIZED offering of incense by
Aarons' sons which resulted in their death (Lv09)
Hence in this case Moses acted properly and cautiously
and did not accept until authorized.
-------------------------------------------------

LIST108c below summarizes the above bulleting.

Rather what is bothering Rashi in this verse is that
the numerical attribute ONE breaks up the verse phrase
(OX FROM THE HERD)
