SUCCINCT SUMMARY:
-----------------
One of Rashis 10 major goals is to illustrate complex
geometric designs or algebraic complications. This is
called the Rashi method of SPREADSHEETS, since
SPREADSHEETS are one method of clarifying a complex
relationship. The SPREADSHEET method can refer to
any illustration of a verse that clarifies it.
EXAMPLE Nu33-49a
----------------
Verse Nu33-49a states
---------------------
The Jews camped
FROM Beth Yeshimoth
TO Avayl Shitim
--------------------
Rashi comments
---------------------------------------------------
The distance from Beth Yeshimoth to Avayl Shittim
encompasses 12 square mil. From this we infer that
the Jewish camp encompassed 12 square mil

EXAMPLE Nu34-08a
----------------
Chapter Nu34 describes the Israel borders
In describing borders 6 terms are used.
In explaining these 6 terms we use clock notation
For example: 9:15 represents a STRAIGHT border from
clock position 3 to clock position 9.
Similarly: 10:15 represents a CROOKED border
starting from clock position 3, going to the
clock center, and TURNING towards 10
Similarly: 3:00 represents a TERMINATING
BORDER starting at clock position 3, going
towards 9 but STOPPED (GOING OUT) at the center
and GOING OUT (Changing direction) to 12
When dealing with the clock recall that
12 = North
6 = South
3 = East
9 = West
Here are the 6 terms used by the Bible
-----------------------------------------------------------
BORDER DEFINITION: TO BE: BORDER is FROM 3 to 9 (9:15)
BORDER CONTINUATION: PASS: Border PASSES from 3 to 9
BORDER TERMINATION: GO OUT: Border GOES out from 3 to 12
BORDER TERMINATION: GOING-OUT: BOrder GOES OUT from 3 to 12
BORDER CROOKEDNESS: Border ROLLS out from 3 to 10
BORDER CROOKEDNESS: ETCH: Border ETCHES from 3 to 10
-----------------------------------------------------------
Two very important points must be made
FIRST: The Biblical text uses other terms for borders
such as DESIRE, DESCEND etc. We only discuss 6 today
SECOND: There are very serious controversies between
e.g. the CAFTOR VAFERACH and other commentaries on what
the original Biblical borders were. We are NOT DECIDING
between these commentators. Rather, we are pointing out
that despite the confusion, there are some basic principles
that all commentators agree with: the meaning of
border-descriptor terms. We feel that pointing out this
commonality among the commentators will make the controversies
appear less arbitrary.
LIST690m below summarizes these 6 terms and indicates,in
the footnotes, Rashis, using these terms.
LIST690a below presents many Rashis based on SPREADSHEETS.

*1 GOES OUT=YaTzaH vs. GOING-OUT=ToTzeOThauv
*2 Example: Nu34-04a
-----------------
Southern border goes from 3 towards 9, rolling towards 10
Southern border ---------------------- rolls towards Akrab
RASHI: Southern border slope up in North West direction
towards Akrab
*3 Example: Nu34-04c,d
-------------------
Southern border:3 to 9;GOING OUT at center; GOES OUT to 12
Southern border GOES OUT at Kadash Barneah;Goes OUT to Chtzr Adar
RASHI: Southern border terminates at KADASH BARNEAH
It then ROLLS out northward to CHATZAR ADAR
EXAMPLE: Nu34-05a
-----------------
Southern border (3 to 9) GOES OUT at 9
Southern border GOES OUT at WEsTERN SEA
Rashi: The western sea is the SOUTH-WESTERN border of Israel
*4 EXAMPLE: Nu34-08a
-----------------
North border from 9 etch to 3
North border: etching to LEVOH CHAMAS
Rashi: North border runs fom western sea to to LEVOH CHAMAS
*5 EXAMPLE: Nu34-04d
-----------------
South border ROLLS
toward AKRABIM [e.g. 3 to center to 10 (10:15))
In the direction TO Tzinah
It GOES OUT at KADESH [it terminates there]
It GOES OUT to CHATZAR [e.g. 3 to center to 12; 3:00 OClock]
It PASSES to ATZMON [continues: e.g. 6 to center to 12-6:00]
It ROLLS out to EGYPTIAN RIVER [changes direction like 10:30]
It GOES OUT at the WESTERN SEA [The Border]

NOTES
-----
*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the
FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a
formula which you plug into.
But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally)
be solved by a formula. Instead you have to
formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only
then do you have the formula.
In other words these problems are solved by
the EQUATION vs the FORMULA
Thus the statement that the eldest gets double
suggests the following model.
- Suppose the are B brothers
- Suppose 1 of them is eldest
- The Fathers total assets are T (Total)
- Let A be the amount each brother inherits
We have no formula for A
- Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A
- The eldest obtains double, 2A.
- Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T
Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T
This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1)
An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children
- T=100,000
- B=4
- So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000
- Eldest takes 2*20000=40000
- Other 3 take 20000
- Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000
See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2
*2
Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER
--------------------------------------------------------------
- the women vowed to become a nazarite
- the husband annuled her vow
- but the husband did not tell her about the annulment
- the women then violated her vow
-
- In such a case God forgives the women (despite her
intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown
annulment of her husband
-
- We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT
