=========== THE THREE MEANINGS OF THE HEBREW ROOT YRASH ========

 Many people naively think that meaning is solely a function
 of the ROOT of a word. In fact meaning depends on
 --the ROOT
 --the grammatical mode used
 --the preposition (to, from, of) use with the verb.

 In this posting Rashi examines the 3 meanings of YARASH
 which depend on the grammatical mode as follows
 --in the SIMPLE TENSE (KAL) YARASH means INHERIT
 --in the PIEL TENSE YARASH means POVERTY
 --in the HIFIL TENSE YARASH means CONQUEST
 The examples speak for themselves.

 Note how Rashi explicitly states this PRINICPLE in Dt
 but only states TRANSLATIONS in Nu. This is typical of several
 Rashis on one topic. Rashi may be elaborate in only one
