RASHIS USE OF SEMANTIC & GRAMMATIC ROOTS |
Most people are aware that both Biblical and Modern Hebrew
is built on 3 letter roots. The rules governing the conjugation
of 3 letter roots are known as grammatical rules. Rashi fully
believed in the 3 letter root theory.
Rashi also believed that the MEANING of 3 letter roots can be
derived by using SEMANTIC CONJUGATION RULES which break the
3 letter root into a 2 letter root and a single letter with
meaning.
The LIST below shows how the 2nd root letter of NUN means LIKE,
in the semantic conjugation rules
For example
* the Hebrew root Chet-Nun-Pay means to FLATTER.
The 1st and 3rd letter of this root spells Chet-Pay
* The Hebrew root Chet-Pay means to COVER
* And we just said that the letter NUN means LIKE
Putting this all together we obtain that
FLATTERY = LIKE COVERING (in other words a COVER UP)
Similar examples are presented in the LIST below
|
ROOT | MEANS | = | NUN | NUN= | R
AaNaPh | (anger) | = | Nun | (like) | APh | (
AaNaSh | (Person) | = | Nun | (like) | ISh |
ChaNaF | (Flatter) | = | Nun | (like a) | ChF | | AaNaCh | (we) | = | Nun | (like) | ACh | (Bro
ZaNaK | (Leap) | = | Nun | (like a) | ZeeK |
KaNaF | (Wing) | = | Nun | (Like a) | CaF | (
TzANaF | (Put on clothes) | = | Nun | (like an) | TzuF | <
| GaNaV | (Thief) | = | Nun | (like) | GaV | (C
GaNaZ | (Hide) | = | Nun | (like) | GayZ | (S
| | | | | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The above rule is one of many POSSIBLE RULES but not a
necesary rule. That is, not all roots whose 2nd letters
are Nun follow this rule. For example
----------------------------------------
ChiNaM (Free) = MEM (What) ChayN (Grace)
----------------------------------------
In this example we break up the root ChiNaM by its 3rd letter
not by its 2nd letter: CHINAM = M + CHIN.
*2 In these examples the root with and without the NUN has
the same meaning
*3 Rashi simply says that TzaNaF means to PUT TO REST.
But our point is that the Hebrew Tzanaf doesnt just mean
to PUT TO REST but more specifically it means to OVERLAY
as in putting on a turban or putting on clothes.
Thus by using the two letter roots we gain more insight
into both the meaning and believability of Rashi.
*4 That is a thief vs a robber enters steathily sort of like
thru clefts and holes. I should mention that the other
meanings of the Hebrew GaV also have a connotation of
pits/clefts/bumpy surface: e.g. Cheese, mountains,
human back (which looks cleft like because of the vertebrae)
*5 This root is usually used to denote hiding treasures which
the Hebrew equates with a procedure that is sort of like
covering with shearings

VERSE: Lv01-02b
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: This answers an anonymous question raised by
a fellow Baal Koray. See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h9n20.htm
The Hebrew word for PERSON is ISH. ADAM means MENSCH |
Many commandments begin IF A PERSON DOES SUCH AND SUCH. The
Hebrew word for PERSON is usually ISH. In only 4 cases is the
word ADAM used.
Rav Hirsch explains that ADAM refers back to ADAM the first
person. Thus ADAM has a connotation of someone distinguished.
We have therefore translated ADAM as the Yiddish MENSCH to
denote someone important. (The Zohar similarly lists 4 words
for PERSON---ADAM, ISH, GEVER, ENOSH--and states that ADAM
is the highest state).
Hence in commandments dealing with the animal lustful nature
of man use the word ISH for person. However commandments
which address mans special Divine nature, commandments
like Sacrifices and commandments dealing with Ritual purity
use the word ADAM. The LIST below gives the examples.
|
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH PERSON | HEBREW WORD USED |
Lv01-02 | When a MENSCH offers a sacrifice | ADAM *1 |
Lv13-02 | When a MENSCH contracts leprosy | ADAM *2 |
Nu19-14 | When a MENSCH dies in a tent... | ADAM *3 |
Ex30-32 | A MENSCH shouldnt annoint with holy oil | ADAM *4 |
Lv13-29 | When a PERSON has head leprosy | ISH |
Lv15-16 | When a PERSON has a seminal emission | ISH |
Lv17-10 | When a PERSON eats blood | ISH |
Lv18-06 | PEOPLE should not commit sexual sin | ISH |
Lv19-03 | PEOPLE should revere their parents | ISH |
Lv20-02 | If a PERSON offers to MOLECH | ISH |
LV20-09 | If a PERSON curses his parents | ISH |
Lv20-10 | If a PERSON commits adultery | ISH |
| | |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 In other words IF YOU OFFER A SACRIFICE OFFER IT AS A MENSCH
Thus Rashi sees in this verse an echo of the concerns of the
prophets that God says WHY DO I NEED YOUR SACRIFICES ... IF
YOUR HANDS ARE FULL OF BLOOD (E.g. Is01-10:17).
Rav Hirsch echoes similar sentiments.
It is instructive to see this in the language of Rashi.
In the sequel words in bracketed expressions are
added for clarity and not found in Rashi. Other words
are found in Rashi.
-------------------------------------------------------
Why does it say [ADAM]? Just as ADAM [was a mensch and]
never offered sacrifices from theft since all [sacrifices]
were from his own possessions, so to, you do not offer
sacrifices from theft.
--------------------------------------------------------
As we have often emphasized in this list one does not learn
Rashi by reading Rashi! Rather one learns Rashi by first
reading the LISTS on which Rashi was based. Such LISTS
facilitate focus on Rashis main point.
*2 (Rav Hirsch explains this). We wouldnt care if an animal
contracted leprosy. We wouldnt care if a person who
resembles an animal contracted leprosy. But if an ADAMITE
contracted leprosy, if a human created in the image of the
Supreme Being, defiles himself by uttering slander and
contracting leprosy, then this person should indeed
be ashamed of themselves and seek atonement.
For leprosy unlike say adultery or theft does not come from
a sin of passion but rather comes from slander which is a
violation of the appreciation of the Divine Image in all
humans.
*3 If an animal dies in a tent then it is no big deal--coming
into that tent should not confer a state of impurity.
And if a human resembling an animal died it similarly
would not be of concern. But when an ADAMITE dies, someone
created in the image of God, then indeed that shakes us up.
It makes us doubt. It makes us wonder if the Divine image
means anything seeing that death overtakes man. It is
this mental state of doubt which Rav Hirsch identified with
the Biblical State of Ritual impurity---hence we see that
it is precisely the death of an ADAMITE, not a mere animal,
but a human being created in the image of God, that confers
this state of impurity-doubt.
*4 Rav Hirsch does not bring this in his list. I would simply
state that the sin of annointing oneself with temple oil is
the sin of not recognizing ones intrinsic worth as a MENSCH,
as someone created in the image of God. For indeed, if you
really really believed that you were created in the image
of God then why would you seek to enhance your spiritual
status by annointing yourself with oil. It is only a
spiritually insecure person who doubts his impurity who
would do such an act and that is why it is prohibited (that
is we all have intrinsic holiness and do not need supplements
from holy oils)

RASHI RULE USED: DOUBLE PARSHAS
#*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc. 2001, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
VERSE: Ex28-04g
RASHIS COVERED: Ex28-04g Lv16-04b
Priestly Garments Come from HOLY TEMPLE FUNDS |
Rashi points out (Ex28-04g, Lv16-04b) that the proper
translation of the Hebrew phrase BIGDAY KODESH is not HOLY
CLOTHES (which in Hebrew would be BeGaDiM MeKuDaShiM) but
rather CLOTHES OF THE HOLINESS (or more smoothly,CLOTHES OF
THE HOLY TEMPLE).*1
This teaches us that Priestly clothes come from Temple funds.
The LIST below shows that in every major reference of PRIESTLY
CLOTHES they are always referred to as CLOTHES OF THE HOLY
TEMPLE.*2
|
VERSE | Verse TEXT with CLOTHES referred to as TEMPLE CLOTHES |
Ex28-01:05 | God told Moses:tell Jews to Make HOLY [TEMPLE] Clothes |
Ex31-10 | The artisan will make Clothes of the HOLY [TEMPLE] |
Ex35-04:20 | Take materials..make the Clothes of the HOLY [TEMPLE] |
Ex39-01 | They made the Clothes of the HOLY [TEMPLE] for Aaron |
Ex40-13 | Dress Aaron with the Clothes of the HOLY [TEMPLE] |
Lv16-04 | Let Aaron dress ...the Clothes of the HOLY [TEMPLE] |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 The technical grammatical point is that BIGDAY KODESH occurs
in the construct state and therefore the phrase should be
translated as CLOTHES OF ...
*2 Thus in all major chapters the Priestly Garments are referred
to as the Priestly Garments OF THE HOLY [TEMPLE].
However we are not saying that every occurence of the
word CLOTHES has the adjectival phrase OF THE HOLY TEMPLE
(For example, Lv06-04 says ...AARON.. WILL REMOVE HIS CLOTHES)
|
REITERATION THAT EVERY PRIESTLY GARMENT COMES FROM TEMPLE |
There are only 3 main sets of verses in the Bible where the
LINENs worn by the priest are mentioned. The contrast is
glaring---in one of them it says LINENS of the HOLY [TEMPLE]
thus reiterating that each and every garment comes from
TEMPLE funds.
|
VERSE | COMMAND IN VERSE | CLOTHES IN VERSE | IS HOLINESS MENTIONED |
Ex28-42 | Make | LINEN Pants | |
Lv06-03 | Let him wear .. | LINEN Pants | |
Lv16-04 | He will wear a | LINEN Tunic | of the HOLY [TEMPLE]*1 |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 As can be seen in only one verse is it mentioned that these
garments come from the HOLY [TEMPLE]. In light of the first
LIST we interpret this to be an emphasis that each and every
Priestly garments comes from the HOLY [TEMPLE]

RASHIS COVERED: Lv16-04d Lv16-24a Lv16-24c Ex30-20a
PRIESTS IMMERSE WHEN THEY CHANGE GARMENTS |
We lightly review all times WASHING is mentioned by Sacrifice
procedures. As can be seen WASHING/IMMERSION is only
mentioned 3 times.
The 3 times that require washing involve
* A priest changing from WEEKDAY clothes to PRIESTLY clothes
* From PRIESTLY-GOLD clothes to PRIESTLY-LINEN clothes
* From PRIESTLY-LINEN clothes to PRIESTLY-GOLD clothes
So based on the Rabbi Ishmael Rule of GENERALIZATION Rashi
infers that WHENEVER a Priest changes his Garments
there is a required immersion.
In other words Rashi interprets these 3 verses as EXAMPLES
of a more general Biblical rule which is inferred by
GENERALIZATION.(See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example3.htm)
These Rashis facilitate & illustrate the distinction between
what the Bible SAYS and what can be INFERRED from the Bible
using the methods of Rabbi Ishmael (cf Tractate Yuma 32a)
|
VERSE WITH REQUIRED WASHING | VERSE CONNECTED WITH |
Lv16-04 | Priest changes from Gold to Linens*1 |
Lv16-24 | Priest changes from Linen to Gold*2 |
Ex30-20 | For MORNING & EVENING offerings*3 |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 The verse only explicitly mentions that the Priest puts on
Linens. The fact that he CHANGES from Gold to Linen is
INFERRED.
Numerous verses---e.g. Nu28-23, Nu28-31, Nu29-06, Nu29-11,
Nu29-16, Nu29-20 or more explicitly Nu28-15---state that
other offerings are offered BESIDES/AFTER the Morning
offering. In other words the Morning offering was the
first offering offered.
Now a High Priest always serves in GOLD GARMENTS while an
ordinary priest serves in LINEN GARMENTS. Thus Ex28-04:39
mentions the 8 GOLD GARMENTS while Ex28-40:43 mentions the
4 LINEN GARMENTS.
Hence since
* The Morning offering is offered FIRST
* The High Priest always wears GOLD Garments
* Lv16-04 orders the High Priest to wear LINENS on Yom Kippur
we infer that the Priest CHANGED from GOLD to Linen.
As indicated in Lv16-04 this change is accompanied by a
WASHING/IMMERSION
*2 The verse explicitly states that the HIGH PRIEST
* removes the LINENS he was wearing
* & Puts on his High Priest clothes
which we known from Ex28-04:39 vs Ex28-40:43 to be GOLD
GARMENTS. Hence we infer that Lv16-24 speaks about the
priest CHANGING from LINEN to GOLD garments
*3 The verses explicitly state that the priest immerses when
COMING TO THE TEMPLE or WHEN OFFERING---in other words
whenever the priest changes from his WEEKDAY outfit to
PRIESTLY CLOTHES (GOLD or LINEN)
