RASHI FILLS IN WORDS TO MAKE TEXT FLOW

Nu15-01:16 describes the accompanying Flour-Oil-Wine libations
that must be brought with each sacrifice. More specifically
--------------------------------------------------------------
For sheep bring volumes of 43.2 eggs FLOUR, 18 eggs OIL & WINE
For Rams- bring volumes of 86.4 eggs FLOUR, 24 eggs OIL & WINE
For Oxen- bring volumes of 129.6 egs FLOUR, 36 eggs OIL & WINE
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Bible now indicates that the above are PER animal amounts
(So if you bring e.g. 3 sheep you bring TREBLE the libation
amount). Rashi FILLS-IN the verse and makes it more flowing

In the sequel the CAPPED words in brackets are the FILL-INS
of Rashi *1
TEXT OF VERSEADDED PHRASE

COMMENTS

*1 Notice how the FILL-IN words----ANIMALS, SACRIFICE, LIBATION
-- are simply the subject of discussion. Thus Rashi is
indeed only filling in words that are normally not repeated
in discussions --- namely, the words that describe the
   SUBJECT of discussion.

BIBLICAL LAWS WHEN WE COME TO ISRAEL

In about 10 commandments we find the Biblical law stated as
------------------------------------------------------------
WHEN YOU COME to the land promised to you then you should do
such and such
------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi says on Ex12-25a the general rule that these
laws are only obligatory AFTER the Jews come to Israel.
Thus e.g. the Passover ritual was NOT obligatory in the
wilderness (except for the first one); it was only
obligatory after the Jews came to the land*1

Dt17-04Making a King *2When you come &Conquer &Inhabit
Dt18-09Witchcraft prohibitionsWhen you come
Dt26-01First Fruit sacrifice*2When you come &Conquer &Inhabit
COMMENTS

*1 As a general rule of thumb if the law begins WHEN YOU COME
TO THE LAND then the law is not applicable in the wilderness

However a few laws that begin WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND
are applicable even BEFORE the Jews came to the land.

For example the witchcraft prohibitions (Dt18-09) state
   --------------------------------------------------------
WHEN you come to the land DO NOT LEARN to act like the
residents. Do not use witchcraft THE WAY THEY DO; rather
   behave simply with Your God
   --------------------------------------------------------
So we see that the reason that the prohibitions begin
with the phrase WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND is to
indicate HOW the Jews differ from the Non-Jews.

In fact, the Sifrah/Sifray states that
   -----------------------------------------------------
The reason the paragraph begins with WHEN YOU COME TO
THE LAND is to indicate the REASON and MERIT by which
the Jews will inherit the land -- namely, they will
behave DIFFERENTLY then the non-jewish inhabitants
   which practice witchcraft
   -----------------------------------------------------

See Malbim who makes a similar point. The above
   explanation also applies to Dt07-01.

*2 Rashi notes that
--in 7 verses it simply states WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND
--in 2 verses it states WHEN YOU COME, CONQUER & INHABIT
Thus based on the Rabbi Ishmael Rule of GENERALIZATION
we infer that ALL phrases of the form WHEN YOU COME
TO THE LAND mean AFTER WE BOTH CONQUER & INHABIT the
land. In particular the law would not be obligatory
after conquest UNTIL we actually inhabited and settled
   down.

However Nu15-18a uses a different phrase: IN COMING
TO THE LAND vs WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND.

   Hence, concludes Rashi/Sifrah/Sifray, the two
phrases must have distinct meanings. Since WHEN
YOU COME TO THE LAND means after BOTH CONQUEST
and INHABITANCE it follows that IN COMING TO THE LAND
means AFTER CONQUEST (but before INHABITANCE). Hence
   we have the law
   -------------------------------------------
After they conquered the land they were
   immediately obligated to separate challah
even though they had not yet inhabited
   the land
   -------------------------------------------

Three clarifying comments are now in order

We have used a methodology of clarifying the meaning
of MANY VERSES using SPECIFICITY in one verse. This
method is developed in the following URL:
   See url http://www.RashiYomi.Com/lv09-07d.htm
for examples of deriving meaning of non-specific
phrases based on a ONE VERSE OCCURENCE WITH
   SPECIFICITY. (Thus e.g.
   -----------------------------------------------------------
   * EGEL means YOUNG COW;one verse says EGEL=1 YEAR
   * BLOOD ON HIM means death; 1 verses says it means STONING
   * CONFOUNDED means confusion;1 verse says it means BY NOISE
   -----------------------------------------------------------

In passing both Rashi and the Sifrah/Sifray speak about ONE
VERSE WHERE IT MENTIONS CONQUEST & INHABITANCE. Actually,
there are TWO verses (Both listed above). It would appear
to me that this is simply a generalization based on 2
   verses.

Finally note that MALBIM tries to investigate the
semantic differences between WHEN YOU COME vs IN COMING.
MALBIM suggests that IN COMING denotes IMMEDiACY. I
believe that such an approach, while correct, is too
technical. My approach is simply to justify everything
using the above list which speaks for itself. I might
however at a future date find sufficient examples of
IF statements beginning with IN DOING which would
   justify MALBIMS approach

VERSE: v9-6-16a

FROM: Ron Mitnick
DATE: June 16, 2001

There are several verses/commandments which conclude
AS GOD SAID SO DID THEY DO.

Rashi in turn comments THIS SHOWS THEIR PRAISWORTHINESS
THAT THEY DID AS COMMANDED.

Why did Rashi intepret this way?
Why does this happen on those commandments?

THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------

=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols

RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
