THE WORDS FOR North, South, West...

We review a list of the 4 compass positions and see a
consistency in how they are named.

To understand the naming convention we imagine a person facing
the sunrise (which happens in the east). Then
* EAST is the direction he FACEs
* WEST is to his BACK
* SOUTH is on his RIGHT
The verses illustrating this principle come from RADACK, ROOTS
POSITIONNAMESAMPLE VERSETEXT OF VERSE
EASTBEFORE/FACEEx27-13 *1the EASTERN side
WESTAFTER/BACKJoel 2:20 *1The WESTERN SEA
SOUTHRIGHTSong 4:16Arouse North & come SOUTH
COMMENTS

*1 Particularly strong proofs come from verses which mention
opposite directions. For example we have
   -------------------------------------------------------------
Joel 2:20 Its start to the EAST SEA & its end to the WEST SEA
   -------------------------------------------------------------
or
   --------------------------------------------------------------
Job 23:8 I cant find God in the EAST or search for him in WEST
   --------------------------------------------------------------

The words for EAST and WEST in these 2 verses are FACE & BACK.
These contrasts lend credibility to our thesis

RASHIS COVERED: Nu02-09a Nu02-17a Nu02-17b Nu10-35a

THE ORDER OF THE TRIBES

Both Nu02-17 and Nu02-34 state that
------------------------------------------------------------
As the Jews CAMP so (in the same position) they JOURNEYED
------------------------------------------------------------

* The CAMPING positions are mentioned in Nu02-01:34
* The JOURNEY sequence is mentioned in Nu10-13:27

The LIST below shows how the ORDER of the tribes in
the text is the same in both chapters.
Rashi (Nu02-17b) uses the TECHNIQUE of OTHER VERSES and
shows how these 2 chapters cross reference each other.

COMMENTS

*1 Notice that Nu10-13:14 explicitly mentions that
   ----------------------------------------------
..and Judah Journeyed FIRST (by the word of God)
   ----------------------------------------------

Judah is also the FIRST LISTED item in Nu10.

By contrast Nu02-03 simply LISTS the item
   without giving SEQUENCE. It says
   ----------------------------------------------
These are the camping positions. Judah Yissacar
and Zevulun formed one side of the camp
   ----------------------------------------------

Then in Nu02-09 we are told
   -------------------------------------
Judah was the FIRST in the JOURNEYS
   -------------------------------------

So Rashi is Simple on Nu02-09a & cross-references
   Nu10-13:14

*2 Nu10-13:27 gives a SEQUENCE when Journeying:
   First Judah then...

By contrast Nu02-01:34 lists CAMP GROUPS. It
   doesnt always give SEQUENCE.

While some of the SEQUENCE of Journeys is mentioned
   in Nu02-09, Nu02-16, Nu02-24, Nu02-31, nevertheless,
the Bible leaves out the SEQUENCE order of the
TEMPLE in the journeys in Nu02.

So Rashi simply cross references the appropriate
verse in Nu10 where the SEQUENCE order of the Temple
   is mentioned.

As already noted, the LIST of ITEMS in each chapter
   is the same.

*3 This paragraph, Nu10-35:36, is a prayer when the temple
journeyed. As such its logical place is between Nu10-21
and Nu10-22 which lists the journeys of the Jews.

The Bible however places the prayer later on in the text
The Bible INDICATES that this paragraph is out of sequence
by using PARENTHETICAL BRACKETS [ ] (The Bible uses
upside down NUNS which notationally look like our BRACKETS)

This explanation that Nu10-35 belongs after Nu10-21
is equivalant to the explanation of the
Sifsay Chachamim that this paragraph belongs
after Nu02-17(Since Nu02 and Nu10 are parallel chapters
that both discuss the sequence of Journeys).

Some further comments on this rashi are the following:

Although Nu10-33 deals with the war-ark it seems
reasonable to assume that Rashi regarded Nu10-35 as
dealing with the Real Ark(This answers a question
posed by a high-school sophomore in Volume 9 Number 16
on the relation between the Rashis on Nu10-34 and
   Nu10-35)

Indeed if Nu10-35 dealt with the war ark
it would not be out of place!!!! In other words the
upside nuns (the brackets) justify our interpreting
Nu10-35 as dealing with the real ark. Such a prayer
was needed when the Jews journeyed since they were
more vulnerable then--compare a similar concern in
   Ex34-24)

Rashi explains why the prayer (for peace) was moved
from the chapter on Journeys to Nu10-35: In order to
interrupt the sequence of bad occurences in Nu10
   with a prayer for peace.

In fact throughout Numbers we see blessings and peace
mentioned after each war and trial. For example
   --------------------------------------------------------------
   * The prayer for peace is mentioned after Jethro left(Nu10-35)
   * Selection of the Sanhedrin occurs after murmurings(Nu11-24)
   * The Wine Libations are after the Spy rebellion (Nu11-15)
   * Tzitzith occurs after the Shabbath Descecration (Nu15-37)
   * Priestly gifts after the Korach Rebellion(Nu18-08:20)
   * Song of the well after a Canaanite war(Nu21-17)
   --------------------------------------------------------------

Thus e.g. Wine is a symbol of Joy. Similarly the purpose
of the Sanhedrin is to bring peace. Tzitzith remind us of
all Gods commandments and how God saved us from Egypt.
Priestly gifts symbolize peace between the Jews and the
Priests. Thus we see that this explanation of Rashi is
   a general theme.

EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
