MTHM means PEOPLE::ISH means GENTLEMEN

BACKGROUND
----------
The word Mem-Tauv-Yud-Mem occurs only 22 times in the Bible.
It is universally translated as PEOPLE. Further insight is
obtained from the other Hebrew word for people: ISH, which
means distinguished people (Gentlemen?)

REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/nu13-03b.htm

THE TEXT
--------
In http://www.RashiYomi.Com/means-32.htm we have outlined 32
ways to infer meaning. A key method of inferring meaning is
a review of VERSES containing the word or a review of VERSES
containing either this word or a close synonym. THis is done
in the list below

THE RASHI:
----------
Rashi
- on the word MTHIM simply translates it as PEOPLE
- on the word ANASHIM translates it as DISTINGUISHED PEOPLE

Hence we infer
- that MTHIM means ORDINARY PEOPLE (The populace)
- that ANASHIM means RESPECTABLE PEOPLE

THE LIST
--------
Here is the list. The reader should ascertain for themselves
that the words invovled mean POPULACE vs RESPECTABLES
VERSEMEANSText of verse with POPULACE or RESPECTABLES
Dt02-34aPOPULACE..we conquered every POPULATED CITY*1
Is41-14POPULACE..dont fear JEWISH WORMS, JEWISH POPULATIONS*2
Is05-13POPULACE..the only honor left is a STARVING POPULATION
Jb24-12POPULACE..(Bandits) rally from a RURAL CITY*3
Dt28-62aPOPULACE..& you will remain a SMALL POPULACE *4
Nu13-03bRESPECTEDThe spies were all RESPECTED, Community leader
Dt01-13bRESPECTEDAppoint RESPECTED,WISE,..people for Judges
Ex17-09eRESPECTED...Pick RESPECTED people for the war
Nu31-03cRESPECTED...arm RESPECTED people for the war
COMMENTS

*1 The following verses are almost identical: Dt03-06

*2 Note the parallelism WORMS: vs POPULATION. Thus Isiah
was addressing the POPULACE not the RESPECTABLES. He
compares the exiles to WORMS roaming in dirt

*3 Literally from a CITY OF ORDINARY PEOPLE; this is therefore
   best translated as RURAL

*4 The whole verse says as follows
   ----------------------------------------------------------
& you will remain a SMALL POPULACE instead of having been
   LIKE THE STARS
   ----------------------------------------------------------
Thus the curse has 2 components
   - You will no longer be like STARS; you will be a POPULACE
   - You will not be MANY; you will be SMALL *10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 People ask me: If that is what the verse says why didnt
Rashi say it. (Rashi says: SMALL REPLACING BIG). My
response is that Rashi was responding to a fast reading
of the verse. Such a fast first reading would leave the
reader with the impression that YOU WILL NOT BE LIKE
STARS BUT JUST BE A RURAL COUNTRY.

Rashi then added that BESIDES this QUALITATIVE COMPONENT
there is a QUANTITATIVE COMPONENT(SMALL vs BIG)

GODS SEES - GOD SAVES :: GOD HIDES - GOD DESTROYS

BACKGROUND
----------
It is well known that God is Incoporeal. However the Bible
uses Coporeal metaphors to describe Gods behavior. We
therefore need methods to determine what Coporeal metaphors mean

THE TEXT
--------
Many texts speak about God SEEING, HEARING, LISTENING to
suffering. Dt31-17 speaks about God HIDING his Face

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi uses a method of Parallelism. If
- Seeing, Hearing Listening means God saves/helps
- then
- Hiding ones face means God destroys
In other words OPPOSITES(See-Hide) indicate
OPPOSITES(save-destroy)

THE LIST
--------
Thus Rashi is Simple. Here is the LIST.
VERSEText of Verse: SEE means SAVE::HIDE means DESTROY
Gn29-32She named him SeeSufering because God SAW my suffering
Gn30-17and God LISTENED to Leah & she gave birth
Ex02-24:25God HEARD, SAW and KNEW the suffering of the Jews
Ex16-12I(God) have HEARD the complaints of the Jews...

Dt31-17aI will HIDE my Face on that say (when they sin)

THE INFINITIVE CAN MEAN be involved in

BACKGROUND
----------
It is well known that Hebrew consists of 3 letter Hebrew
roots. These roots may be CONJUGATED in different ways
to have different meanings.

THE TEXT
--------
The punctuation LAKOACH usually denotes the infinitive
(TO TAKE). However there are verses where this translation
does not make sense (Dt31-26) TO TAKE?? THIS TORAH?
How do we interpret these verses?

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi suggests interpreting these verses as GERUNDS (using
the ING form of a verb). Thus we would interpret Dt31-26
as BE INVOLVED IN TAKING THIS TORAH. Similarly all INFINITIVES
that can not be interpreted as infinitives are interpreted
this way.

THE LIST
--------
Here is the LIST. In each case the INFINITIVE should
be interpreted as BE INVOLVED IN.... Since BE INVOLVED
IN has a connotation of time the 3rd column of the list
indicates HOW OFTEN we are expected to be invovled.
VERSETEXT: BE INVOLVED INHOW OFTEN

BIBLICAL LAWS WHEN WE COME TO ISRAEL

BACKGROUND
----------
In about 10 commandments we find the Biblical law stated as
------------------------------------------------------------
WHEN YOU COME to the land promised to you then you should do
such and such
------------------------------------------------------------

THE TEXT
--------
A Variety of textual phrases are used to describe coming to
Israel
-- IN COMING to the land
-- WHEN you come to the land
-- WHEN you come to the land and CONQUER and INHABIT it
The difference in phrases can be inferred from an alignment

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi learns nuances from each different phrase.
- First: Rashi learns that these commandments are ONLY
obligatory when we come to the land but not in the desert*1

- Next: Following the Rabbi Ishmael style rules, Rashi
infers that these commandments were only obligatory
AFTER BOTH conquest and inhabitance

- Finally from the verse with the phrase IN COMING TO THE LAND
Rashi learns that only CONQUEST (but not inhabitance) is
required for Challah, the commandment spoken about

THE LIST
--------
Further details are supplied in the footnotes. Here is the LIST
VERSELAWPHRASE1PHRASE2

Dt18-09Witchcraft prohibitionsWhen you come
Dt26-01aFirst Fruit sacrifice*2When you come&Conquer &Inhabit
Nu15-18aChalah LawsIn coming
Differs*2 *3
COMMENTS

*1 As a general rule of thumb if the law begins WHEN YOU COME
TO THE LAND then the law is not applicable in the wilderness
For example the Jews observed the Passover of Egypt but
did not observe Passover again in the wilderness. *10

*2 Note the contrast
-- MOST verses begin: When you come to the land
-- Nu15-18a begins: In coming to the land

Rashi/Sifrah/Sifray, therefore concludes, that the two
   phrases must have distinct meanings.
   -------------------------------------------------------------
   - WHEN you come to the land MEANS after conquest/inhabitance
   - IN coming to the land MEANS after conquest *11
   -------------------------------------------------------------

*3 Rashi notes about the above list that
   --------------------------------------------------------
--in 7 verses it states WHEN YOU COME
--in 2 verses it states WHEN YOU COME, CONQUER & INHABIT
   --------------------------------------------------------

We therefore use the Rabbi Ishmael LIST EXCEPTION RULE
   ------------------------------------------------------
   - If you have a LIST of similar phrases (eg WHEN YOU COME)
   - and a few of them are different (eg COME CONQUEST..)
   - then these few phrases dont just shed light on themselves
   - but rather they shed light on the WHOLE LIST
   -------------------------------------------------------
So every commandment in the list is only obligatory when
you COME CONQUEST & INHABIT. See footnote *12 for more details

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 However a few laws that begin WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND
are applicable even BEFORE the Jews came to the land.

For example the witchcraft prohibitions (Dt18-09) state
   --------------------------------------------------------
WHEN you come to the land DO NOT LEARN to act like the
residents. Do not use witchcraft THE WAY THEY DO; rather
   behave simply with Your God
   --------------------------------------------------------
Note the capped words THE WAY THEY DO:
So we see that the reason that the prohibitions begin
with the phrase WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND is to
indicate HOW the Jews differ from the Non-Jews.

In fact, the Sifrah/Sifray states that
   -----------------------------------------------------
The reason the paragraph begins with WHEN YOU COME TO
THE LAND is to indicate the REASON and MERIT by which
the Jews will inherit the land -- namely, they will
behave DIFFERENTLY then the non-jewish inhabitants
   which practice witchcraft
   -----------------------------------------------------

See Malbim who makes a similar point. The above
   explanation also applies to Dt07-01.

*11 We make 3 points
First we have the following law:
   -------------------------------------------
After they conquered the land they were
   immediately obligated to separate challah
even though they had not yet inhabited
   the land
   -------------------------------------------

Next we point out that the proof that WHEN YOU COME
TO THE LAND refers to both CONQUEST and INHABITANCE
will be presented in footnote #3.

Finally we point out the nature of the logic:
   --------------------------------------------------------
-- WHEN you come MEANS AFTER conquest & inhabitance
-- IN coming MEANS AFTER conquest
   --------------------------------------------------------

Rashi does NOT attach special meaning to WHEN vs IN. Rather
Rashi simply assumes that IN COMING must have a DIFFERENT
meaning to WHEN YOU COME. Since WHEN YOU COME means 2
things (conquest/inhabitance) therefor IN COMING means
   just 1.

(This is my approach. Malbim however suggests
that IN COMING has special nuances of immediacy. THerefore
they were immediately obligated when they came to the
land. At the present writing I cannot find a list to
support Malbim and hence I dont support him yet).

*12 Let me recap. In this case we
   - have a list (Commandments whose obligation start in Israel)
   - a few exceptions (when you come CONQUEST & INHABIT). Hence
   - These exceptions dont just apply to those particular verses
   - Rather they apply to the whole list. HENCE, all commandments
in the LIST are only obligatory when we COME CONQUEST INHABIT

Thus we have used a methodology of clarifying the meaning
of MANY VERSES using SPECIFICITY in one verse.(That is,
one verse says when YOU COME & INHABIT & CONQUER while
the other verses say WHEN YOU COME)

This method is developed in the following URL:
   http://www.RashiYomi.Com/lv09-07d.htm which provide
examples of deriving meaning of non-specific
phrases based on a ONE VERSE OCCURENCE WITH
SPECIFICITY. Here are a few more examples
   -----------------------------------------------------------
   * EGEL means YOUNG COW;one verse says EGEL=1 YEAR
   * BLOOD ON HIM means death; 1 verses says it means STONING
   * CONFOUNDED means confusion;1 verse says it means BY NOISE
   -----------------------------------------------------------
Thus in each case the SPECIFIC VERSE sheds light on the
whole list of verses where this phrase occurs. So here
too: THe verses that say CONQUEST & INHABIT shed light
   on the whole LIST.

In passing both Rashi and the Sifrah/Sifray speak about ONE
VERSE WHERE IT MENTIONS CONQUEST & INHABITANCE. Actually,
there are TWO verses (Both listed above). It would appear
to me that this is simply a generalization based on 2
   verses.

Rashi explains WOMAN OF as WOMAN OF A MAN (that is a married

How should this Rashi be interpreted? Are there other examples?

THE HEBREW ROOT naatz MEANS to anger

BACKGROUND
----------
The Hebrew root Nun-Aleph-Tzade occurs only 29 times in the
Bible.

THE TEXT
--------
The meaning of NAATZ can be inferred from context in most
verses. Perhaps the simplest method is to use a verse with
two parallel phrases like Prv5-12. Thus we have
------------------------------------------
I HATE (SaNay) ETHICS
MY HEART IS ANGERED(Kaath) BY REBUKE
------------------------------------------

THE RASHI
---------
There are 5 verses in Chumash using this root. On two
of them Rashi says that this root means to ANGER.

THE LIST
--------
Here is the list of Biblical verses where this root occurs
VERSETEXT OF VERSE WITH THE ROOT Nun-aleph-tzade meaning ANGER
Nu14-11How long will these people ANGER me*1
Nu14-23& all those who ANGER me will not see Israel*1
Dt32-19And God saw (the idolatry) and was ANGERED
Nu16-30& (when God punishes them) youll know they ANGERED God
Dt31-20...they will desert me; ANGER me; annul my convenant
COMMENTS

*1 The context of these verses is the spy incident. Recall
that the spys maliciously slandered Israel and said that
God could not bring us there. God then complained that every
time he did a miracle for these people they ANGERED him.
Finally God swore never to let these Jews see Israel. God
continues: And any person WHO ANGERS me will not see it.*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Note that the context of these verses clearly shows that
Nun-Aleph-Tzade means ANGER or some related emotion.

In passing it would appear that Nun-Aleph-Tzade has a
    more intense meaning then Kuph-Ayin-Samech.

We have presented 13 methods by which Rashi infers meaning
    in http://www.RashiYomi.Com/means-32.htm.

Of these 13 methods Rashi could have used 2 to infer
    the meaning of NAATZ=ANGER
-- THE PARALLEL FORM SENTENCE METHOD (see our analysis
of Prv5-12 above; also see eg 1King19-03 or Isa37-03)

-- THE VERSE-PROPERTY method (See our analysis of the
verses in Numbers in footnote #1 above)

CONSTRUCTS CAN INDICATE NEW CONCEPTS

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
---------------
To Yosi Zoimen for encouraging me to find the LIST by asking
the question.

BACKGROUND
----------
Words can frequently take on CONSTRUCT states (IN English
the CONSTRUCT state is indicated by the word OF -- e.g. THE
HOUSE of ROYALTY).

THE TEXT
--------
On several rare occasions we have CONSTRUCTS without any
followup. For example Dt22-11b speaks about A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN OF
The natural question is OF WHAT

THE RASHI
---------
There are two approaches to this. Most commentators simply
state THE BIBLICAL WORD of IS EXTRA AND HAS NO MEANING*10
But Rashi used the technique of NEW MEANINGS. As an example
the construct phrase without a followup-- WOMAN OF -- would
for a new concept. WOMAN-OF would mean MARRIED WOMAN.

THE LIST

*1 Cf an identical usage in Ps58-09

*2 That is the REWARD is the END-OF whatever you are
doing for work. (This explanation comes from RADACK,
   BOOK OF ROOTS)

*3 Cf An Identical usage in Ps105:36. *12

*4 The sentence
   -------------------
   I suffered many (RV)
   -------------------
would mean that MANY tribulations came on me.

But the actual verse which uses the construct(Ps120-6,Ps129-2)
   ---------------------------
   I suffered MANY-OF(RABATH)
   ---------------------------
would refer to receiving MANY OF EACH tribulation

An English analogy could be MAJOR STORM vs MANY STORMS
Hence we have translated RABATH (Many-of) as MAJOR.

*5 Dry land includes both
   - fertile farm land
   - rocky supported land (on which you build buildings)

This explains the use of YABESHET in Ex04-09. The water
spilled by Moses became blood on the ROCKY-land (If it had
become blood on FERTILE land we could say that liquids mixed
with it making it red; thus the miracle was heightened)

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 E.g. See the explicit statement by Ibn Ezra on Ps120-6

*11 Some of these translations are advocated by major
commentators and are accepted. Some are controversial
Some are my own. In general when I bring a list I try
and let the reader form their own opinion. After
reading the list the reader should ask if the GENERAL rule

    http://www.RashiYomi.Com/gen-1.htm. There we show that
Genesis 1 describes the creation of prophecy not the
creation of the world: We therefore translate Genesis 1 as
    ----------------------------------------------------------
For the sake of the Choicest qualities in man God created
the spiritual and physical worlds. For the physical world
had been chaotic and confusing, an emotional darkness over
an unconscious jungle with the spirit of prophecy only
hovering in the background. [THEREFORE, Because of the
Choicest qualities in man] God said: LET THERE BE THE

-(Dt11-07:08) It was not your fathers who saw this;rather you

* EXAMPLE 3: Hitpael has different rules if 1st root letter is
   Tzade (USE: Ni-Tz-Ta-Dack not Ni-Th-Tza-Dack--Gn44-16a)

================================================================
THE CITATION RULE: Rashi enriches meaning by citing OTHER verses
         REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.Com/other-20.htm
================================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: Dt26-05d We went down to Egypt with A FEW PEOPLE
ENRICHED by Gn46-27: We went down with 70 people

* EXAMPLE 2: Lv01-05a Non-priests may SLAUGHTER offerings
This law DERIVED from explicit statement in 2Chr30-17

* EXAMPLE 3:Why does Rashi say that Chur is Miriams son(Ex17-10b)
DERIVED from possible interpretation of 1-Chr18-19

* EXAMPLE 4: Gn35-22a Reuven Slept with Bilhah(Fathers concubine)
Gn49-04 Reuven PLAYED with fathers BEDS
CONCLUSION: Reuven inteferred with fathers personal
life(ruffled bedspreads); Bible condemns Reuven by
exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do

=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------
Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
			   while DOING ITS WORK

* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
            --------------------------------------------------
Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
	   (EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS

* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
            --------------------------------------------------
Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
	  (EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
(GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols

RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
