ADVERB vs CONSTRUCT |
BACKGROUND
----------
Let us review some technical GRAMMATICAL terms:
----------------------------------------------------------------
TERM------- EXAMPLE-------------- USAGE/MEANING
----------- --------------------- ------------------------------
ADJECTIVE - the AMERICAN flag --- tells a PROPERTY of OBJECTS
ADVERB ---- GREAT American flg - tells a PROPERTY of ADJECTIVES
CONSTRUCT-- the flag OF AMERICA - indicates OWNERSHIP
----------------------------------------------------------------
THE RASHI
---------
The CONSTRUCT and ADJECTIVAL form are similar and
interchange. Using the example above, we see that the phrase
AMERICAN FLAG indicates the colors and forms of the flag while
THE FLAG OF AMERICA technically indicates a flag owned by the US
In this case there is no one flag owned by the US and hence we
interpret THE FLAG OF AMERICA to mean an AMERICAN TYPE FLAG.
In other words we interpret the CONSTRUCT as an ADJECTIVE.
THE TEXT
--------
TEXT: Lv25-39a Dont give your slave the work OF SLAVES
RASHI: Reinterpret the CONSTRUCT as an ADJECTIVE
TEXT: (Reinterpreted) Dont give your slave SLAVE-WORK
In other words dont eg make him do LATRINE work*2
Rashi similarly interprets the phrase (Lv25-42b) SALES OF
SLAVES as SLAVISH TYPE SALES (ie Public sales treating slaves
like commercial objects).
THE LIST
--------
The LIST below gives several examples of CONSTRUCTS
reinterpreted as ADJECTIVES *10 |
VERSE | ADJECTIVE vs CONSTRUCT | MEANING OF ADVERB CAPPED |
Jer02-02 | Youthful-Charity | UNINHIBITED charity |
Jer02-02 | BRIDE-love | INTENSE Love(no inhibitions) |
1Sm20-17 | he loved with SELF-Love | INTENSE Love(not overridden) |
Job06-19 | Rivers go to TAYMITE paths | DISTANT paths*1 |
2Sm18-27 | ACHIMaATZs-run | FAST run |
Lv25-42b | a SLAVE-sale | PUBLICLY on rocks |
Lv25-39a | dont give him SLAVE-work | e.g. LATRINE work*2 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Note first that there is no reason to interpret the verse
literally (rivers go to the PATHS of TAYMAH). Hence we
are justified in interpreting this construct as an adjective
Rashi Ibn Ezra and Ralbag have differing views on what the
phrase TAYMITE paths means: One interpretation is DISTANT
PATHS while the other is LOW-LYING PATHS (In either case the
travel of rivers FAR AWAY or LOW is symbolic in the verse of
being double crossed by ones friends)
*2 Interesting is the difference in interpretation approach
used by Rashi vs Rambam:
-- Rashi & Rambam inteprets SLAVE WORK as LATRINE work
-- Rambam gives a further example: WORK YOU ARENT TRAINED FOR
For example making an electrician do carpentry
Both Rashi and Rambam interpret the phrase TOIL WORK(Lv25-43)
as WORK FOR THE SAKE OF WORK (e.g. WORK TILL 5 vs DO A
SPECIFIC TASK)
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 We have till now only described the phenomena of adjective-
construct interchange. We have not yet explained why an
Author would wish to use the CONSTRUCT vs the ADJECTIVE.
Quite simply a CONSTRUCT used for an ADJECTIVE is
a POETIC technique--it evokes an IMAGE and MEMORY of
situations (which is one function of language). This is
in contrast to using an ADJECTIVE which would be a DRY
DESCRIPTIVE approach.
In other words saying DONT GIVE YOUR SLAVES DEMEANING WORK
isnt specific. But if I say DONT GIVE YOUR SLAVES SLAVE-WORK
it conjurs images of HOW slaves have been mistreated -- we
might for example, have memories of despising slaves by making
them do LATRINE work

RABBI ISHMAEL: CONTRADICTORY VERSES |
BACKGROUND
----------
Rabbi Ishmael laid down 13 Style principles which facilitate
understanding the Biblical text. The last principle is the
haunting and enigmatic FOOTNOTING BY CONTRADICTION technique
In this technique the Bible boldly uses contradictory verses
to evoke an obvious resolution in the mind of the reader. This
resolution then becomes a footnote to the two contradictory
verses.*10
REFERENCE
---------
See the following URL for a discussion of the Rabbi Ishmael
rule. http://www.rashiyomi.com/ri-14.htm
We have added 5 new verses to this list today
THE METHOD
----------
We have outlined 5 submethods of resolving contradiction.
* ASPECTS
--------
e.g. ONE VERSE says MAKE ME A STONE ALTAR
A 2nd VERSE says MAKE ME AN EARTHEN ALTAR
We resolve this contradiction by seeing STONE and EARTH
as 2 aspects of the altar which is made of STONE and filled
with EARTH
* 2 STAGES
--------
e.g 1 verse says Levites start learning at 25
Another verse says at 30
The resolution is that the Levites started LEARNING at 25
and started SERVICE at 30
* MEANING(Restrictive vs Broad)
-----------------------------
e.g 1 verse says DONT LET ANY CANAANITES LIVE
Another verse says TAKE SLAVES FROM THE SURROUNDING NATIONS
The resolution is that SURROUNDING is literal. We can purchase
slaves from surrounding non-jewish nations but not the Cananite
* NAMES(2 names)
--------------
e.g. 1 verses calls it a BIRTHstool (Name by FUNCTION) while
a 2nd verse calls it an STONEstool (Name by SUBSTANCE)
* MODAL(MAY-MUST)
---------------
e.g. One verse says WORKERS SHOULD PRAY TO GOD FOR VENGENCE
AGAINST BAD EMPLOYERS while another verse speaks about THE
POSSIBILITY OF THEM PRAYING. We infer that employees MAY
PRAY but have no obligation
THE LIST
--------
In the list below we cite the 2 verses(eg Nu21-21a and Dt02-26)
We then indicate which of the 5 methods is used (2 ASPECTS).
Finally we show HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED. Although we
dont cite the 2 verses we cap the contradiction. So if one
verse says [ISRAEL sent delegates] while another verse says
[MOSES sent delegates] we simply say [MOSES sent delegates on
behalf of ISRAEL] |
VERSE-1 | VERSE-2 | WHY 2 | HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED |
Nu21-21a | Dt02-26 | Aspects | MOSES sent delegates on behalf of ISRAEL |
Ex20-19c | Ex19-20 | Aspects | Gods VOICE in heaven;His FIRE on earth |
Ex40-35a | Ex25-22 | Aspects | Moses at ENTRANCE; God by KRUBIM(Nu07-89 |
Ex28-37a | Ex39-30 | Aspects | Priest mask went AROUND and OVER head |
Ex21-03c | Lv45-41 | Aspects | Slaves wife not USED but SUPPORTED |
Lv25-41a | Lv45-42 | Aspects | Slaves children not USED but SUPPORTED |
Ex20-21a | Ex20-22 | Aspects | STONE altar; filled with EARTH |
Ex15-01d | Ex15-04 | Stages | Egypt thrown UP;then shot DOWN to sea |
Ex16-13b | Nu11-09 | Stages | 1st DEW bed; then MANNA; then DEW cover |
Nu08-24b | Nu04-03 | Stages | Levites LEARN at 25;they SERVE at 30 |
Lv25-44b | Dt20-16 | MEANING | Slaves in SURROUNDING nations;not CANAAN |
Dt15-17a | Lv25-10 | Meaning | Slaves work FOREVER=TILL 50th YEAR |
Lv07-09a | Lv07-10 | Meaning | PRIEST=DIVSION OF PRIEST,get sacrifices |
Lv04-03b | Lv04-03 | Meaning | YOUNG ADULT Bullock=BEGINNING ADULTHOOD |
Ex01-16b | Is66-09 | Names | BirthStool=StoneStool(2 names) |
Dt03-09a | Dt04-48 | Names | CHERMON = SRYON = SNYR=SYAN(4 names) |
Dt15-09a | Dt24-15 | Modal | you MAY pray for vengence;no OBLIGATION |
Ex12-15b | Dt16-08 | Modal | MUST eat mtzoh 1st night;MAY eat on rest |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Lv25-44b
Rashis on Lv25-44b Lv25-44c and Lv25-44c make similar points
*2 Ex20-21a
cf also Dt27-05 which speaks about making an altar of STONE
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 I am indebted to Professor Habital for coining the phrase
USING CONTRADICTION AS A VEHICLE OF COMMUNICATION. Dr
Habital applied this to the Mishnah which was the first
legal text to use contradiction (vs. uniform opinion) as
a method of communication.
As can be seent this CONTRADICTION method pre-exists
in a more or less explicit form in the Bible.
