*1 What are the 4 sons really about? Who are they? Can the
Passover Hagaddah be used to help little Abrahamy learn?
Read this beautiful essay.
*2 A slightly technical paper. But this is the latest discussion
of WHY WE USE A DATABASE APPROACH? What can the database
approach do that we cant do otherwise? Visit

*3 Lv01 thru Lv08 present the Sacrificial procedures.
Many of the Rashis on these verses illustrate the technique
of COMPARING ALMOST IDENTICAL PARSHAS WHICH HOWEVER DIFFER
IN A FEW DETAILS. We then have the opportunity to infer
numerous laws from these details. This is a rich opportunity
for both the Rabbi and novice alike

SHLAMIM means PEACE |
BACKGROUND
----------
Lv01 thru Lv08 discusses the sacrifices that Jews were obligated
or volunteered to give either as individuals or as a community.
For each sacrifice the Bible indicates
-- WHO must/may bring it
-- HOW it is offered
------ how is the BLOOD placed on altar
------ what is done with the animal or plant parts offered
-- WHEN is it brought; for what purposes
A majority of Rashis on sacrifices use the powerful method of
DOUBLE PARSHAS by which we extract nuances by comparing
similar paragraphs
TODAYS TOPIC
-------------
The NAMES of the Sacrifices
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi specifically comments on the meaning of the SHLAMIM
name. But the approach of this email group is that to properly
understand Rashi we must REVIEW all sacrifice names.
THE LIST
--------
The list below revus names of all sacrifices and gives the
reason for this name. In each case the reason is connected
with something unique to that offering. |
OFFERING | TEXT | MEANING OF ROOT | Why?THis is only offering... |
OLAH | Lv01-03 | Go up | The WHOLE animal is offered*1 |
MINCHAH | Lv02 | RestFul | Offerings symbolizes saiety*2 |
SHLAMIM | Lv03*3 | Peace;complete | Brought on salvation from danger |
CHATHATH | Lv04 | Sin*4 | Brought for sin |
ASHAM | Lv05 | Guilt*5 | brought for sins of regret/guilt |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The animal was TOTALLY consumed on altar fires.By contrast
In other offerings certain PEOPLE had rights to eat part
of the offering.*10
*2 The Minchah offering is a PLANT offering consisting of
FLOUR, OIL and INCENSE. The Minchah is baked as Matzoh &
offered. Traditionally Matzoh-bread symbolizes saiety: e.g.
----------------------------------------------------------
Ps104-15 wine GLADDENS the heart; oil BRIGHTENS the face
bread SATISFIES (provides a foundation)
----------------------------------------------------------
Furthermore the Minchah offering is introduced with the words
WHEN A TRANQUIL SOUL OFFERS *11 showing an emphasis on
tranquility and peace.
*3 SHALOM means PEACE and COMPLETE. Rashis almost exact words:
-----------------------------------------------------------
-Shlamim were brought when a person is SAVED FROM DANGER
(lv07-11:13); this would connect with the meaning of PEACE
-Shlamim are the only offering where the owner, priest
and altar all eat something (in other sacrifices
only the altar and priest receive or only the altar).
Thus the offering is COMPLETE (involves all parties)
-----------------------------------------------------------
There is no need to see this as a controversy. Quite simply
the name can be a double pun on its many unique properties.
*4 The sin offering is clearly brought when a person sins.
This is stated explicitly at Lv04-02,13,22,27
*5 GUILT offerings are, like the sin offerings, brought
for sin. But GUILT offerings are brought for sins between
MAN and MAN(While SIN offerings are brought for sins that
dont necessarily affect people like eg descecrating the
Sabbath). Apparently, you feel more GUILTY if you sin
against your fellow man*12
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Here are textual supports that people may eat in all
offerings EXCEPT the olah--Hence the name OLAH=UP--it
is the only sacrifice where everything went UP to God
--------------------------------------------------------
SACRIFICE VERSE SHOWING THAT PEOPLE EAT IT
------------ -------------------------------------------
Minchah Lv07-09:10
Chatath Lv06-22:23
ASHAM Lv07-07
Shlamim Lv07-15,32
---------------------------------------------------------
*11 Here are the introductions to the various sacrifices
---------------------------------------------------------
SACRIFICE VERSE TEXT
--------------- -------- -------------------------------
OLAH Lv01-02 When a HUMAN offers
MINCHAH Lv02-01a When a TRANQUIL SOUL offers
Shlamim Lv03-01 If a Shlamim is offered
Sin Lv04-27 When a TRANQUIL SOUL sins
Guilt Lv05-01 When a TRANQUIL SOUL
--------------------------------------------------------
Rashi makes the comment
----------------------------------------------------
Minchah is the only voluntary sacrifice that begins
WHEN A TRANQUIL SOUL.
----------------------------------------------------
But as can be seen from the above list, 3 of the
5 sacrifice types begin that way(The sin offerings however
are obligatory not voluntary. But this distinction doesnt
explain the usage of NEFESH (SOUL) vs PERSON).
Here is the explanation.
First we have explained that NEFESH refers to the
EXPANSIVE QUALITY of DESIRE; hence it refers to the
SOUL, DESIRE, REST etc. See our discussion of this word
at http://www.RashiYomi.com/nefesh-7.htm
Next: It would seem that the 2 sin-type offerings--the
SIN and GUILT offering-- happen because a person tries to
EXPAND themselves where they shouldnt. Thus the word
NEFESH here means TO EXPAND (illegally)
Finally: The use of the word NEFESH by Minchah would refer
to tranquility and restfullness.
-----------------------------------
When a SOUL FEELS RESTED
and offers the RESTFULNESS offering
-----------------------------------
In summary: The word NEFESH has 2 uses in the sacrifices.
By the sin offerings it refers to unwarranted expansiveness
By the Minchah offering it refers to restfullness.
Finally we have to explain Rashis explanation
----------------------------------------------------
Who usually offers a Minchah? The poor person.
I, God, account it as if he offers his SOUL
----------------------------------------------------
The reason I reject the literal interpretation of Rashi
is because
-- contrary to Rashis statement there are other sacrifices
that use the word NEFESH
-- contrary to Rashis statement SOUL is the SUBJECT not
the OBJECT of the sentence (Not WHEN A SOUL IS OFFERED
but WHEN A SOUL OFFERS)
I think the simplest approach is to explain that Minchah
is brought when a person feels rested and tranquil.
But the poor person HARDLY ever feels that way.
Consequently when the poor person, who for the first time
in many years, experiences tranquility and nevertheless,
thinks of God it is as if he offered ALL HIS TRANQUILITY
to God. This contrasts with the Rich person who
frequently feels happy and offers Minchahs only on
special occasions.
In final summary:
-- Nefesh means EXPAND and RESTED (and soul)
-- It occurs by 3 of the 5 sacrifices
-- It appears to refer to ILLEGAL expansion by the
sin offerings
-- it appears to refer to thanksgiving for
tranquility in the minchah
-- THis is especially noteworthy in the poor person
who hardly ever feels restful
*12 Guilt offerings are brought for
-------------------------------------------
False witnessing Lv05-02
Theft or denial Lv05-21
-------------------------------------------
There are various types of circumstances needed
(such as taking an oath). Guilt Offerings are also
brought for descecration of the temple objects..
Perhaps a more precise formulation (instead of man-man
sins) would be SINS OF PROPERTY whether thru denial
of testimony, theft, witholding or sinning against
temple property.

------------
Animals eligible for PEACE offerings
THE LIST
--------
THe UP Offering chapter (Lv01) has a COMBINED paragraph
for SHEEP and GOAT UP offerings. By contrast the PEACE
Offering Chapter (Lv03) has 2 separate paragraphs. Why?
THE RASHI
---------
-The SHEEP and GOAT UP offerings are the SAME
Hence they have the same paragraph
-The SHEEP and GOAT PEACE offerings have 1 DIFFERENCE
Hence they have different paragraphs
Here is the list. The footnotes provide further details |
OFFERING TYPE | PARAGRAPH | ANIMALS COVERED |
UP (OLAH) | Lv01-03:09 | Cattle |
UP (OLAH) | Lv01-10:13 | Sheep, Goats*1 |
UP (OLAH) | Lv01-14:17 | Birds |
PEACE(Shlmim) | Lv03-01:05 | Cattle |
PEACE(Shlmim) | Lv03-06:11 | Sheep*1 |
PEACE(Shlmim) | Lv03-12:17 | Goats*1 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The above list clarifies Rashis Question
- The UP offering has ONE paragraph for SHEEP/GOATS
- While the PEACE OFFERING has TWO paragraphs for SHEEP/GOATS
The answer can be seen by looking at the proceedures for
for the SHEEP vs GOAT offerings
--------------------------------------------------------
PROCEDURE-STEP SHEEP(Lv03-06:11) GOATS(Lv03-12:17)
---------------- ------------------- -------------------
Leaning Lv03-08 Lv03-13
Slaughter Lv03-08 Lv03-13
Blood Throw Lv03-08 Lv03-13
Precious fat Lv03-09 ??
Intestine fat Lv03-09 Lv03-14
Adrenals Lv03-10 Lv03-15
Adrenal fat Lv03-10 Lv03-15
Liver FInger Lv03-10 Lv03-15
Offer on fire Lv03-11 Lv03-16
--------------------------------------------------------
The above list provides an answer. ONLY the SHEEP SLAMIM
had the PRECIOUS FAT offered (The GOAT SHLAMIM did not).
ALL Other procedures were the same.
Hence the Bible had to repeat the whole paragraph
separately for SHEEP and GOATS.
Note that the above logic uses the Rabbi Ishmael Principle
----------------------------------------------------------
If you have 2 laws (eg Sheep and Goats)
And they differ in at least one place (Eg Precious fat)
Then you cant treat them otherwise the same
UNLESS the Bible explicitly identifies that sameness
----------------------------------------------------------
So the Bible had to repeat the whole paragraph to let
us know that the SHEEP and GOAT offering are identical
in procedures EXCEPT for the one place (offer of the
PRECIOUS FAT) where they differ.

THE BLOOD THROW PROCEDURE |
BACKGROUND

Lv01 thru Lv08 discusses the sacrifices that Jews were obligated
or volunteered to give either as individuals or as a community.

TODAYS TOPIC
------------
How was blood thrown for the UP (OLAH) and SIN (CHATATH)
THE LIST*10
--------
The list below shows two distinct languages for the BLOOD
THROW procedure
-- THROW the BLOOD AROUND
-- TAKE BLOOD WITH FINGER AND PLACE ON HORNS (AROUND)
THE RASHI
---------
So Rashi is simple:
-- Both phraseologies use the word AROUND
-- One of them emphasizes placing on horns: So we place
blood on all 4 horns
-- The other one simply says THROW AROUND: So it suffices
to throw upwards on 2 diagonally opposite corners. |
VERSE | LANGUAGE VERSE OFFERING | OFFERING |
Lv04-25 | Take with finger and PLACE on ALTAR HORNS | Sin*1 |
Lv04-30 | Take with finger and PLACE on ALTAR HORNS | Sin |
Lv04-34 | Take with finger and PLACE on ALTAR HORNS | Sin |
------- | ----------------------------------------- | |
Lv01-05 | THROW the blood on the altar AROUND | UP*2 |
Lv01-11 | THROW the blood on the altar AROUND | UP |
Lv03-02 | THROW the blood on the altar AROUND | PEACE |
Lv03-08 | THROW the blood on the altar AROUND | PEACE |
Lv03-13 | THROW the blood on the altar AROUND | PEACE |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The Biblical language is explicit. The blood is PLACED
on all 4 horns
*2 Note the contrast between the 2 phrases in the list.
Apparently for the UP and PEACE offering it was only
necessary to THROW the blood on 2 diagonally opposite
sides (So the blood was THROWN and AROUND)*11
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 We only bring the standard sacrifices. There were
other special sacrifices and they fit into the
above paradigm also (cf Lv04-07, Lv04-18,Lv08-15,
Lv09-09, Lv16-18)
*11 There are other derivations (mentioned in the Talmud)
in connection with the above. But it would appear to
me that the above list and argument is the simplest.

LECHEM means FUEL; PNAY means FOCUS |
BACKGROUND
----------
One of the major Rashi tasks is to act like a dictionary
and provide meaning. An important subtask here is to
provide NUANCES of new meanings and idioms.
THE TEXT--Here are some verses and their LITERAL translation
--------
Lv03-11 Bread Fire To Sweet Smell To God
Lv04-06a To the FACE of the PAROCETH
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi provides new nuances to these words as follows
------------------------------
BREAD = FUEL
TO (LAMED)= FOR (LAMED)
FACE = The Focus
------------------------------
Rashi also identifies the construct form in the verse
THE RESULTING TRANSLATION
-------------------------
Lv03-11 (the above organs are) FUEL for the FIRE; For
purposes of something sweet smelled FOR God
Lv04-06a Throw the blood to the FOCAL POINT of the PAROCETH*1
THE LIST
--------
THe LIST below really is 3 lists combined in one.
That is we defend our thesis in 3 ways
-- we show various WORD PAIRS (like day=12 hours;day=24 hours)
that show enlargement of meaning; so BREAD can mean
FUEL
-- We show VERSES where BREAD means FOOD
This justifies the attempted enlargement
-- We show that various ORGAN WORDS (Head,Face,Hand,Foot)
can refer to things with similar functions (HEAD means
TOP; FACE means FRONT; FOOT means SUPPORT etc). This
helps justify that FACE OF THE PAROCETH refers to the
FOCAL POINT OF THE PAROCETH |

COMMENTS |
*1 Recall the ark sat in the Holy of HOlies
THe ark had two 20 feet poles used to carry it
The Paroceth curtain covered the ark
The paroceth had a sort of bulge where the 2 20 foot
poles met the curtain. This bulge was the focal point
of the Paroceth curtain since it was the primary goal
of the curtain to cover the ark
*2 This list comes from our series on NAMING See

*3 3 of these verses were brought by Rashi. I added 2
more
*4 These are standard idioms in all languages. Compare
for example Ez38-12; The nation that sits on the
CENTER (literally: BellY) of the earth.

--------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
