TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE
One way of doing this is to cross reference a
verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives
more details.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah
Dt26-05 states that
-------------------------------
With only a FEW PEOPLE did the
Jews go down to Egypt
-------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of
the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is
provided in Gn46-27
-----------------------------
The total number of people who
came with Jacob to Egypt is 70
-----------------------------
Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES
in this case has explained to us that
FEW PEOPLE means SEVENTY people

COMMENTS |
*1 Rashi explainss that the THANK YOU offering
is an offering brought when a person feels
like saying THANK YOU to God. This is amplified
with FURTHER DETAIL in Ps107-12 which lists 4
circumstances for which people should say THANK
YOU to God: Survivors of (a)a Ship Journey (b)..an
illness (c)..a prison sentence (d) a desert journey

OFFERING OVERVIEW |
---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: DOUBLE PARSHAS
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: DOUBLE PARSHAS
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of DOUBLE PARSHAS simply means
that SEVERAL Biblical paragraphs deal
with the SAME theme.
By comparing both the similarities
and differences in these paragraphs
we are able to discover new patterns
and make inferences.
We emphasize that the resulting
inference is NOT justified
because of the 1 or 2 extra
words but rather because of the overall
dynamic force of the multiple paragraph
comparison. This is clearly illustrated
in the example below
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah. The Passover Hagaddah gathers
4 paragraphs dealing with education. Comparison
of these introductory phrases enables us to label
the types of sons in these chapters.
-------------------------------------------------
VERSE TYPE OF SON TEXT OF VERSE
------- ----------- -----------------------------
Ex13-14 SIMPLE SON When your son ASKS a QUESTION
Dt06-20 WISE SON When your son ASKS a QUESTION
Ex12-26 WICKED SON When your son SAYS a QUESTION
Ex13-08 CANT ASK ----------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
For example Ex12-26 speaks about SAYING A QUESTION
vs ASKING A QUESTION. This suggests that this son
is CYNICAL and WICKED.
Similarly Ex13-08 describes an ANSWER WITHOUT A
QUESTION. This suggests that this son CANT ASK
or is APATHETIC.
Notice how it is the comparison that justifies
these conclusions. Without the comparison
I would not know that it is peculiar for
the Bible to state an answer without a
question. This illustrates the Rashi method
of DOUBLE PARSHAS.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
In todays example we compare about a dozen
paragraphs all dealing with OFFERINGS. Some
of these offerings mention offering the FAT
OF ANIMALS while some do not. Some of these
FAT OFFERINGS involve the ALYAH FAT while
some do not. The LIST clearly suggests
the laws and patterns that are applicable. |
PARAGRAPH | OFFREING TYPE | ANIMAL | FAT PRODUCTS OFFERED |
Lv01-01:09 | UP OFFERING | OXEN | |
Lv01-10:13 | UP OFFERING | OXEN | |
Lv01-14:17 | UP OFFERING | BIRD | |

Lv02-14:16 | PLEASANT-1st | FLOUR | |
Lv03-01:05 | PEACE OFFERING | OXEN | -----, kidney fat,liver finger |
Lv03-06:11 | PEACE OFFERING | SHEEP | ALYAH, kidney fat,liver finger |

Lv04-13:21 | NATION SIN | OXEN | -----, kidney fat,liver finger |
Lv04-22:26 | PRIEST SIN | GOAT | -----, kidney fat,liver finger |
Lv04-27:31 | PERSON SIN | GOAT | -----, kidney fat,liver finger |

Lv05-01:13 | GUILT-WITNESS | *1 | ------------------------------ |
Lv05-14:16 | GUILT-TEMPLE | RAM | ------------------------------ |
Lv05-17:19 | GUILT-DOUBT | RAM | ------------------------------ |
Lv05-20:26 | GUILT-THEFT | RAM*2 | ------------------------------ |
Lv06-01:06 | UP OFFERING | *3 | ------------------------------ |
Lv06-07:11 | PLEASANT PERSON | *3 | ------------------------------ |
Lv06-12:16 | PLEASANT PRIEST | *3 | ------------------------------ |
Lv06-17:23 | SIN OFFERING | *3 | ------------------------------ |
Lv07-01:10 | GUILT OFFERING | *3 | ALYAH, kidney fat,liver finger |
Lv07-11:35 | PEACE THANKYOU | *3 | ------------------------------ |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The paragraph in question shows that depending on economic
level the offering is brought from either
- sheep
- goat
- birds
- flour
Hence the fat offerings (Which dont apply to birds or
flour are mentioned in Lv07-01:10) (Rashi on Lv07-01a,b)
*2 This offering comes from a Ram as is explained in Nu05-08
*3 Notice how the offerings in chapter 6 recap the offerings
in chapters 1 and 2. Thus
---------------------------------------------------------
UP OFFERINGS are mentioned in Lv01 and Lv06
PLEASANT OFFERINGS are mentioned in Lv02 and Lv06
PEACE OFFERINGS are mentioned in Lv03 and Lv07
SIN OFFERINGS are mentioned in Lv04 and Lv06
---------------------------------------------------------
*4 Reviewing the list Rashi explains 3 things(Lv07-01a,b)
- PEACE, SIN and GUILT offerings all offer KIDNEY FAT,....
- Only SHEEP peace and sin offerings offer ALYAH FAT
Hence GUILT offerings (which mostly come from sheep)
offer ALYAH fat
- The KIDNEY FAT is mentioned in Lv03,Lv04 for PEACE/SIN
The KIDNEY FAT is mentioned in Lv06 for GUILT
Rashi explains that
--- The Bible had to list the KIDNEY FAT for GUILT
at least once.
--- Also (it would appear to me) that the KIDNEY FAT
for GUILT could not have been mentioned in Lv05 in the
first statement of offerings since there were four possible
animals for GUILT OFFERINGS (Sheep,goats,birds,flour).
Hence the Bible mentioned it here

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We list here the 8 MINCHAH (PLEASANT)
offerings mentioned in the Bible.
Each one is assigned a code.
We will then, in the next table, pair these
off against the PLEASANT offerings mentioned
in Lv07-10.
The two lists will enable a term by term
comparison. It will also suggest the
intended meaning by the Bible of certain
terms. |
PARAGRAPH | SACRIFICE TYPE | SUBSTANCE | CODE |
Lv02-01:03 | PLEASANT-FLOUR | FLOUR--OIL | A |
Lv02-04:04 | PLEASANT-OVEN | MATZAH-OIL | B |

Nu15-04 | PLEASANT-LIBATION | FLOUR--OIL | G |
Nu05-15 | PLEASANT-JEALOSY | FLOUR----- | H |
Lv07-10 |
Here is Lv07-10 which states that the
following types of PLEASANT offerings
are eaten by all priests.
The list shows how each item mentioned
in Lv07-10 is paired against a similar
item in the list of PLEASANT OFFERINGS
above.
Note the word PLEASANT is the English
translation of the Minchah offering |
Lv07-10 | CROSS REFERENCE | CODE |
PLEASANT-OVEN | Lv02-04:04 | B |
PLEASANT-POT | Lv02-07:13 | D |
PLEASANT-PAN | Lv02-05:06 | C |
PLEASANT-OIL | Lv02-01:03 *1 | A*1 |
PLEASANT-DESOLATE | Lv05-15 *2 | F,H*1 |
PLEASANT-DESOLATE | Lv05-11:13 *2 | F,H*1 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Rashis point---
-- there are only 4 main types of PLEASANT
OFFERINGS (A,B,C,D). The other 4
PLEASANT OFFERINGS (E,F,G,H) are brought
on SPECIAL EVENTS & OCCASIONS--they
are specific INSTANCES of offerings--
they are not general TYPES.
-- But of these 4 types B,C,D have already
been mentioned while A has not been
mentioned. Hence it seems reasonable to
pair A against the PLEASANT OIL offering
mentioned in Lv02-01:03
-- There is NO PLEASANT offering that is
explicitly called the DESOLATE offering.
But we DO have 2 PLEASANT offerings in the
above list where the BIble explicitly
states
----------------------------------------
Do NOT use OIL in this offering because
it is a SIN offering
----------------------------------------
Thus it is REASONABLE (based on these
verses and the above LIST of cases) to
call these SIN/JEALOSY offerings,
DESOLATE offerings.
Note that the type of logic used here by
Rashi is INDUCTIVE vs DEDUCTIVE.

RASHI RULE USED: DOUBLE PARSHAS
#*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc. 2002, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
VERSE: Lv06-19b
RASHIS COVERED: Lv06-19b Lv06-22b
CONTRADICTORY VERSES |
---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: RabbiIshmael
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: 2 Aspects
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
RabbiIshmael advanced the idea that certain textual
inferences do not come from reading and analyzing
ONE Biblical text. Rather the idea is inferred from
reading TWO texts that appear to contradict or
complement each other.
One simple method of resolving contradictory verses
is to perceive the two verses as describing TWO
ASPECTS of the same process. The example below
illustrates this.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Nu21-21 states THE JEWISH NATION sent delegates to Sichon
Dt02-26 states MOSES sent delegates to Sichon
The capped words seem to suggest a contradiction--did
Moses send the delegates or did the nation send them?
But the contradiction is easily resolved by perceiving
the two verses as describing two DIFFERENT aspects of
the same process---MOSES, leader of ISRAEL,sent delegates
ON BEHALF of the whole NATION.
Thus there is no contradiction. One action happened
which has 2 aspects both of which are equally true.
STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE
---------------------------------
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/ri-14.htm
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We bring several examples showing two aspects
Todays example is first. Its details are
described in the footnotes. The details for the
other examples are explained in the reference above
or in the RabbiIshmael series which you can find in
May 1999 at http://www.RashiYomi.Com/calendar.htm |
VERSE-1 | VERSE-2 | WHY 2 | HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED |
Lv06-19 | Lv06-22 | Aspects | OFFERER eats if PURE;All others OK*1 |
Nu21-21 | Dt02-26 | Aspects | MOSES sent delegates on behalf of ISRAEL |
Ex20-19 | Ex19-20 | Aspects | Gods voice in HEAVEN;His FIRE on EARTH |
Ex40-35 | Ex25-22 | Aspects | Moses at Entrance;Gods by Crubim (4-7-89) |
Ex28-37 | Ex39-30 | Aspects | Priest MASK went AROUND and OVER head |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 To appreciate the contradiction we must first
review two other rules about special words
-- The word ALL denotes ALL CASES and indicates
that a law applies even to exceptional cases
See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/words.htm
for a brief summary of the 5 usages of the
word ALL
-- Hebrew usually denotes the direct object
by a suffixed letter (eg a terminal VAV
for masculine words or a terminal HEY
for feminine words).
You can also denote the direct object
with the full word IT (OTHO or OTHA)
Malbim has pointed out that FULL WORD
DIRECT OBJECTS always denote LIMITATION
and EXCLUSIVENESS. I have therefore
suggested that the translation of these
verses should include some word denoting
limitation.
See http://www.RashiYomi.com/dt01-24b.htm
-- We now translate the two verses as follows
----------------------------------------------------------
Lv06-19b The priest offering the REAL sacrifice can eat it
Lv06-22b ANY priest can eat it
----------------------------------------------------------
The two verses and their implications are now resolved as
follows
-- ANY priest (even a blemished one) can participate
in eating the sacrifices (Since each sacrifice was
divided among the priests of the serving section for
that week)
-- But only a PROPER PRIEST (Who is eligible to offer
the REAL sacrifice) who is not ritually unclean
may eat the sacrifice if he is the one actually
offering it.
Thus the two verses speak about 2 ASPECTS of
the same case: The OFFERING PRIEST vs the EATING PRIESTS

--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
