WORKBOOKWe are embarking on a Rashi Workbook Project*1
CLIMAXWhen Rashi should NOT be interpreted literally
SUMMARYWe add a new section: VERY BRIEF SUMMARIES*2
COMMENTS

*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
   schools or home-schooling situations.

*2 I was dining by friends last week and heard the usual
-- I love your digests but dont always have enough time
to read all of them --. So... I have added a new section
in the introduction section of tables called THE VERY
BRIEF SUMMARY. This is a 10 line summary of the whole
Rashi explanation--while it doesnt have tables, Q&As etc
it does a) give the rule used b) explain the verse c)
make the rule appear punchy and intuitive. Of course
you can always peak and read the table if you want more
proofs. Historically we use to have 256 BRIEF SUMMARIES
thru volume 5. They were discontinued. But I am now using
10 line summaries (About treble the length). Hope you
   like it.

CLIMAX

----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: CLIMAX
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: CLIMAX
----------------------------------------

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Lv26-19:20 states that if the Jews sin, then God
will punish them BY DEPRIVING THEM OF FOOD FROM THEIR FIELDS.
This is the SIMPLE UNDERLYING THEME of Lv26-19:20. However
since this theme is repeated 7 times (eg I will break your
proud strength; you will work for nothing; the land wont
yield; the trees wont yield..), therefore Rashi applies the
CLIMAX principle. This principle requires using POETIC
LICENSE on all phrases so as to add nuances.Hence Rashi explains:
no rain, no produce, no yield, no fruits, premature falling
of fruits etc. In other words the THEME is enriched with DETAILS.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
The CLIMAX rule deals with the very special case
where the Bible repeats the SAME idea in SIMILAR
language 3 or more times.

The CLIMAX rule views these repeating phrases as
forming a Biblical PARAGRAPH.

To apply the CLIMAX rule first identify the
UNIFYING TOPIC idea of this paragraph.

The CLIMAX rule then shows how this basic TOPIC idea
is DEVELOPED over a series of STAGES. In effect the
CLIMAX rule requires poetic lisence; the CLIMAX rule
requires reinterpretation of similar or even identical
phrases so as to indicate all nuances of a topic idea.

In effect the CLIMAX rule READS AN INTERPRETATION into
a verse and as such appears homiletic. The 3 guiding
principles when applying the climax rule are
-- Is a basic idea being REPEATED 3 or more times?
-- do the interpretations reflect STAGES in this idea?
-- the JUSTIFICATION of the interpretation is NOT based
on grammar or meaning but rather is justified by
the idea of CLIMAX: That is we expect
THAT A PARAGRAPH OF REPEATING PHRASES MUST BE SHOWING
DEVELOPMENT. This expectation in and of itself
justifies the interpretation. Grammar and meaning
may be supportive but the ultimate proof is always
the paragraph structure.
The standard example illustrates this.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The clearest example of a CLIMAX RASHI is Dt19-11
---------------------------------------
When a person HATES his friend
and he AMBUSHES him
and CONFRONTS him
and he LETHALLY HITS HIM and he dies
...then the murderer will be tried and dies
---------------------------------------

STUDENT EXERCISES
-----------------
- Find the TOPIC IDEA (or the UNIFYING idea) in
the above 4 phrases

- Show how the list of CAPPED verbs describes
HOW IT HAPPENS--that is it shows a progression
of STAGES that naturally leads to murder.

- In describing this succession of stages you
may have to stretch the meaning of some words.
Justify this using CLIMAX

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
ANSWERS TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS:
- The TOPIC IDEA is MURDER. The above paragraph
is describing a MURDER

- The 3 stages that naturally lead to murder are
-- HATRED
-- PARANOIA-noticing every action of the hated person
-- CONFRONTATION-disagreeing with actions of the hated

When you have such a setup: Continual confrontation
coupled with a lack of privacy rooted in hatred--there
eventually erupts a fight which can lead to death.

COMMENTS: Note how we re-translate the word AMBUSH
to refer to a general atmosphere of SPYING AND NOTICING
the hated person. But AMBUSH does NOT mean SPYING and
NOTICING. That is Rashi has used POETIC LICENSE--he
has STRETCHED the meaning of the word AMBUSH to include
all spying and noticing.

The justification for this stretch of meaning is the
CLIMAX prinicple which allows and even requires us to
stretch some meanings in repeated Biblical
phrases in order that the paragraph conform to a succession
of stages. In other words, CLIMAX takes precedence over
dictionary meaning and even grammar---the need to see the
paragraph unified and developed justifies these
reinterpretations.

The understanding of this principle--that CLIMAX, not
the dictionary, justifies poetic license will help
clarify the simplicity in many Rashis.

ALTERNATE APPROACHES
--------------------
Since CLIMAX requires poetic lisence it follows that
2 different people may interpret the same passage
in 2 different ways and show 2 different developments
of the same idea.

In fact, the Midrash and Sifrah on which Rashi
based himself may present several such interpretations.
The fact that Rashi mentions only one of these
interpretations doesnt mean that he rejects the others.
Rashi should be perceived as giving an EXAMPLE of a
possible interpretation rather than stating THE MEANING.
Tbe student in this case is encouraged to not only read
the other interpretations but to come up with his/her own.
Such an approach leads to greater appreciation of both
Rashi, the MIDRASH and CHUMASH.

---------------------------------
A standard reference for Rashis using climax may
be found at http://www.RashiYomi.com/example9.htm

Also visit the Rashi calendar at
http://www.RashiYomi.com/calendar1.htm

The CLIMAX series was presented from Mid August 2000
to Mid September (Xampl-1 thru Xampl-22 on the
calendar).(Or directly go to

It is summarized at Xampl-36.
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/xampl-36.htm

(NOTE: We there regard CLIMAX as an example of the
Rabbi Ishmael DETAIL-GENERAL principle. The Topic
sentence becomes the GENERAL STATEMENT (eg MURDER).
The phrases preceding this general statement are seen
as the DETAILS of murder (eg HATE, AMBUSH, CONFRONTATION).

The Rabbi Ishmael style rules require us to GENERALIZE
these details. Hence the word AMBUSH which has a
specific meaning is generalized by Rashi to refer to
any SPYING and persistent noticing. Thus Rabbi Ishmael
justifies the POETIC LICENSE used by Rashi. These are
two different perspectives describing the same thing.)

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can use the above resources
to display verses with repeating phrases.

You can then have the students do the 3 exercises
listed above:
(a) Find the Topic sentence
(b) Describe the Development in stages
(c) List deviations from standard meanings
and justify these reinterpretations using
the CLIMAX principle.

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
Todays Rashi focuses on the group of verses in Lv26-19:20
The topic idea is
--------------------------
THE JEWS WILL BE PUNISHED
FOR THEIR SINS
WITH A LACK OF FOOD
--------------------------
The LIST below gives the verse texts, Rashis explanation as
well as alternate explanations presented by the Sifray.

COMMENTS

*1 The simple meaning of this Biblical text --
   --------------------------------
I will break your proud strength
   --------------------------------
is the TOPIC THEME that Jewish land will not
produce the good crop that the Jews were proud of.

The Sifrah gives at least 3 explanations
   --------------------------------------------------------
   - PROUD STRENGTH refers to the TEMPLE
   - PROUD STRENGTH refers to the Jewish Army
   - PROUD STRENGTH refers to the Rothchilds and their like
   --------------------------------------------------------

   Rashi states that
   -----------------------------------
PROUD STRENGTH refers to the TEMPLE
   -----------------------------------

My opinion is that Rashi cited the FIRST example in the
Sifray. Rashi did not necessarily believe that this
interpretation is better than the others(Why should it be)
(Possibly Rashi indicates that their will be no priests
praying in the temple for good yield in the fields)

See footnote #3 for another example where Rashi cites
   one interpretation.

*2 Rashi does 2 things here. First Rashi uses the ALIGNMENT
technique. An almost identical curse is stated by Moses
   in Dt28-23a

   --------------------------------------------------------
Lv26-19b HEAVENS will be like IRON; EARTH like COPPER
Dt28-23a HEAVENS will be like COPPER;EARTH like IRON
   DIFFERS *a *b
   --------------------------------------------------------

BEFORE explaining the difference remember our fundamental
principle: THE BASIC IDEA IN THIS BIBLICAL PARAGRAPH
IS THAT THE JEWISH FIELDS WILL NOT PRODUCE FOOD.

So all these metaphors -- HEAVEN LIKE IRON, EARTH LIKE COPPER
-- refer to lack of produce.

Next, Rashi builds DETAILS on this basic idea of no produce
-- IRON is a good sealant while COPPER is inferior
-- HEAVEN like IRON means you dont even have DEW
-- EARTH like COPPER means you can have ROTTEN fruit

(By contrast Moses curse is that HEAVEN will be like
COPPER--so no rain but you get dew; and EARTH will be
IRON--no food but no rot. The Sifray(Devarim) notes
that Dt28 is stated by MOSES while Lv26 is stated by
   God--Hence Gods curse is harsher).

Thus Rashi simply tries to give nuances enriching
the basic theme of no food.

*3 The Biblical text states
   -------------------------------------
Your WORK/STRENGTH will be for NOUGHT
   -------------------------------------

Again the simple meaning is that THERE WILL BE NO FOOD
PRODUCED. The sifrah gives FOUR explanations of WORKING
FOR NOUGHT or STRENGTH FOR NOUGHT. They are
   --------------------------------------------
          a) VINEYARDS will not produce
          b) The FLAX produce will go bad
          c) You-ll MARRY your daughter, give her
a dowry, she will die and you will
be left without a daughter or dowry
          d) The fields will not produce EVEN if
             you WORK them hard
   ---------------------------------------------

Rashi selected interpretation (d). He might
have thought this was the best explanation but
a better perspective is to assume that he was encouraging
all interpretations and simply selected a good example

*4 Again the simple meaning of this Biblical text
   ------------------------------
The land will not give produce
   ------------------------------
is that their will be no food.

However because of the CLIMAX principle, Rashi gives
further nuances. NOT ONLY will the land not produce
yield, the land will destroy any seeds placed in it

*5 Again the simple meaning of the text is that the trees
will not give fruit. But CLIMAX requires enrichment
of this basic idea with further nuances.

   Rashi suggests
-- the trees will NOT PRODUCE FRUIT
   -- and
-- if they produce fruit IT WILL FALL PREMATURELY

The additional nuances were added because of the CLIMAX
principle and the treatment of multiple verses. These
additional nuances are supported by the following
   ALIGNMENT of Lv26-19:20

   ---------------------------------------------------------
Lv26-19 I WILL PLACE your heavens like iron
Lv26-19 ------------ your fields like copper
Lv26-20 NO GIVING, by your LAND, of produce
Lv26-20 & TREES, will NOT GIVE, fruit
   Differs *a *b
   -----------------------------------------------------

*a) Notice how in the first two rows the VERB PHRASE,
I WILL PLACE is stated once but applies to both rows.
This is called ELLIPSIS and is common in verse construction.
It simply means that VERB PHRASE is used for 2 subjects

By contrast in the last two rows the verb phrase PLACE,
occurs in each row. See note *b) for an explanation why

*b) Notice how the order (VERB-SUBJECT) is reversed in
the last 2 rows. It could have said
   ---------------------------------
NO GIVING by your land of produce
NO GIVING by your trees of fruit
   ---------------------------------

Instead it states this with a different word order
   ----------------------------------
NO GIVING by your land of produce
the trees will NOT GIVE fruit
   ----------------------------------

Rashi resolves this different order by suggesting
using the poetic technique of NUANCE EMPHASIS

   The Biblical sentence
   -----------------------------
the TREES will not give FRUIT
   -----------------------------

   implies both
   ------------------------
   the TREES will not give
   ------------------------

   and
   -----------------------
   FRUIT will not be given
   -----------------------

   That is
   - fruit wont be produced
   - if is is produced it will prematurely fall.

RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols

RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
