TODAYS RULE: WORD MEANINGS
TODYS SUBRULE: NEW MEANINGS
----------------------------
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Bible uses 3 distinct phrases to say the same thing
----------------------------------------------------
..and if you dont listen to me after these punishments
then I will bring more punishments on you
----------------------------------------------------
The 3 actual Biblical texts are as follows:
-- if you dont listen to me WITH THIS punishment
-- if you dont listen to me WITH THESE punishments
-- if you dont listen to me TILL THESE punishments
Rashi simple points out that all 3 phrases mean the same thing
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE
-----------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain the meaning of
words, the same way a dictionary explains words.
Rashi not only explains words--he also explains phrases.
A phrase with a new meaning is simply a group of words--
--each word of which has a clear meaning--but the words
together mean something new.
Rashi can justify a suggested new meaning by a variety
of techniques. One powerful technique is the ALIGNMENT
OF PARALLEL phrases.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The phrase ON THE FACE OF occurs in 5 verses with
reference to a person. In 4 of them -- Nu03-04a,
Gn11-28a, Ex20-03a, Dt05-07a -- Rashi explains
that ON THE FACE OF (when used in reference to
a person) means DURING THE LIFETIME.
Notice how the MEANING of the phrase has nothing
to do with the meaning of the words which make
up that phrase, even though, each word has a
clear meaning. That is
-- ON
-- THE
-- FACE
-- OF
all have clear dictionary meanings. But the phrase
ON THE FACE OF, when used in reference to a person,
means DURING THE LIFETIME.
STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE
---------------------------------
The 6 Rashi goals are compactly summarized at
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/rules-01.htm
A fuller version of these 6 rules may be found at
http://www.RashiYomi.com/database.htm

or phrases may be found at

A good summary of Rashis approach to various words
may be found on the dictionary page at
http://www.RashiYomi.com/words.htm
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
Have students use a Konkordance or CD-Rom
to find all occurences of the phrase. For
example by reading Lv26 and listing the
various phrases that are similar we find
the verses Lv26-18, Lv26-23, and Lv26-27
all speak about NOT LISTENING IN THESE PUNISHMENTS
Then have the students try and guess or infer
the meaning of the phrase.
They can then compare their guess with
that of Rashi. This leads to greater
appreciation of Chumash and Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
Here are the 3 phrases which all are translated
the same way by Rashi |
VERSE | PHRASE1 | #2 | PHRASE3 |
Lv26-18a | if you dont listen | TILL | THESE plagues |
Lv26-23 | if you dont listen | WITH | THIS plagues |
Lv26-27 | if you dont listen | WITH | THIS plague |
Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 These phrases are the same
*2 Lv26-18a uses the connective TILL while Lv26-23,27
uses the connective WITH. Rashi attaches no significance
to the difference. That is, all 3 verses are interpreted
the same way: IF YOU DONT LISTEN TO ME AFTER I PUNISH
YOU IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER I WILL BRING FURTHER PLAGUES
Notice how eg TILL THESE PLAGUES doesnt sound right. Thus
Rashi infers new meaning from the alignment
*3 Lv26-18a and Lv26-23 see the plagues as a totality of
many plagues -- THESE PLAGUES; by contrast Lv26-27
sees the plagues as one UNIT -- THIS PLAGUE
That is the various plagues mentioned in Lv26-25
--- disease, war, captivity -- are seen as means
to STARVATION (Lv26-26))

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Bible states
-----------------------------------------

Rashi interprets the phrase SEVEN-FOLD to
mean ALOT or MANY. Thus Rashi translates the verse
-------------------------------------------------
If you rebel against me I will punish you
WITH MANY PUNISHMENTS according to your MANY SINS

One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain the meaning of

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
Have students use a Konkordance or CD-Rom
to find all occurences of the phrase. For
example look up in a Konkordance all occurences
of the number 7 in the Bible.
Let the students then analyze which of these
phrases literally mean 7 and which mean ALOT
The students can then compare their guess with
that of Rashi. This leads to greater
appreciation of Chumash and Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
Here are a collection of verses where SEVEN means,
not SEVEN, but ALOT |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WHERE THE # 7 SYMBOLIZES ALOT |
Prv24-16 | The Righteous falls 7 times but gets up |
Prv26-25 | The enemy speaks nicely but has 7 plots in his heart |
Ps109-164 | I will praise you, God, 7 times a day |
1Sam2-5 | The barren gives birth to 7 |
Dan9-24 | 70 double weeks have been cut on your nation |
--------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
Lv26-18 | I will punish you 7 ON your sins *1 |
Lv26-24 | I will punish you 7 ON your sins *1 |
Lv26-28 | I will punish you 7 ON your sins *1 |
Lv26-21 | I will punish you 7 LIKE your sins *1 |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 Note the different prepositions used: ON YOUR SINS
vs LIKE YOUR SINS. Rashi attaches no significance
to these numbers.
To be technical Rashi INFERS the
rule that SEVEN means ALOT from the top 5 verses and
then applies this rule to the translation of the
Bottom 4 verses. Footnote *10 deals with alternate
approaches to Rashi.
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Some people interpret Rashi literally. Thus the verses
-------------------------------------
If you continue to sin then I will
punish you SEVEN-FOLD
like your sins
-------------------------------------
suggests that there were SEVEN sins and SEVEN punishments
This however, is not NUMERICALLY true. Some verse sets
have 6 and some have 5. Here are some counts
Lv26-14:15 lists SIX not SEVEN sins
---------------------------------------
1 IF Dont LISTEN to m-e-
2 IF Dont DO commandments
3 IF m-y- statues are DESPISED
4 IF m-y- judgements are LOATHED
5 TILL you DONT DO m-y- commandments
6 TILL you BREAK m-y- convenant
----------------------------------------
Similarly Lv26-19:20 list SIX not SEVEN sins
---------------------------------------------
1 HEALTH BREAK your proud strength
2 NATURAL RESOURCES PLACE heavens like iron
3 BAD PRODUCE ----- & earth like copper
4 NON REMEDIABLE your strength will BE for nought
5 ADD-EVEN-SUBTRACT NO GIVE your land produce
6 NO FRUITSMISCARRY trees will NOT GIVE fruit
---------------------------------------------
And Lv26-22 lists FIVE not SEVEN verses
--------------------------------------------
1 I will send the beasta against you
2 The beasts will eat your children
3 the beasts will destroy your livestock
4 the beasts will diminish you
5 your roads will become desolate
--------------------------------------------
The above lists support the notion that the phrase
SEVEN-FOLD means MANY and is not literally interpreted
as 7. Rashi follows up this interpretation by showing
that the verses are filled with inuendoes indicating
MANYNESS in the punishment
Here are some typical Rashis
------------------------------------------------------
Lv26-14:15 doesnt just speak about breaking THE
COMMANDMENTS but rather speaks about breaking MY
COMMANDMENTS--that is the word MY/ME is continuously
repeated. This indicates an EXTRA sin of REBELLING
AGAINST God showing SEVEN-FOLD or MANYNESS
------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------
Lv26-22 speaks about WILD BEASTS attacking the Jews
But the sister verse Dt32-24 speaks about ANIMALS
and SNAKES attacking the Jews. Thus Dt32-24
complements Lv26-22 and indicates SEVEN-FOLD
and MANYNESS
------------------------------------------------------
One COULD interpret this last Rashi literally. One
could say that
-- there were only 5 punishments
-- and Rashi added 2 more from Dt32-24
-- The 5+2 gives a total of 7
But this is silly and shallow. Rashis real point is that
there are MANY punishments, not that there are exactly
seven. The proof of this approach (MANY vs LITERALLY
SEVEN) comes from the 5 verses listed in the list above
These verses shows that SEVEN can mean MANY.
True Rashi emphasizes the SEVENESS but we have seen
that Rashi will frequently engage in puns to make
sure that his readers (who didnt have paper and
CD Roms) remember his points.
In summary: We believe that we have suggested a new
approach to Rashi---that SEVEN means MANY
and should not be interpreted literally.

WILD BEAST ATTACKS |
----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: CLIMAX
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: NUANCES
----------------------------------------
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Lv26-22 states that God will send
- wild beasts on the Jews and these wild beasts will
---- bereft you
---- cut your animals
---- diminish you
---- desolate your roads
It appears that the Bible is simply stating 4 times that
the wild beasts will hurt you. Rashi applies the CLIMAX
principle and emphasizes the NUANCES of the repeated 4 phrases:
--CHILD LOSS(Bereft); ANIMAL loss; PEOPLE loss; ROAD loss.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
The CLIMAX rule deals with the very special case
where the Bible repeats the SAME idea in SIMILAR
language 3 or more times.
The CLIMAX rule views these repeating phrases as
forming a Biblical PARAGRAPH.
To apply the CLIMAX rule first identify the
UNIFYING TOPIC idea of this paragraph.
There are two main uses of the CLIMAX RULE.
Sometimes the CLIMAX rule is used to DEVELOP the
main theme in a series of stages.
In the NUANCE CLIMAX subrule, however, all Rashi
does is READ NUANCES into the paragraph which
enrich the meaning of the TOPIC IDEA. The justification
of reading these nuances into the TOPIC IDEA comes
from POETIC LICENSE which requires that the repeated
phrases each be interpreted differently.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
A clear example of NUANCE climax is todays verse: Lv26-22
---------------------------------------
I, God, will send WILD BEASTS against you
-- they will BEREFT you
-- they will CUT your ANIMALS
-- they will DIMINISH you
-- your ROADS will be desolate
---------------------------------------
STUDENT EXERCISES
-----------------
- Find the TOPIC IDEA (or the UNIFYING idea) in
the above 4 phrases
- Try and find the special NUANCES in each of
the phrases in the verse
- Justify each nuance with a supportive hint
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
ANSWERS TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS:
- The TOPIC IDEA is WILD BEAST ATTACKS
- The remaining 4 phrases describe 4 natural
consequences of a wild beast attack. They are
-- Loss of CHILDREN
-- loss of LIVESTOCK
-- loss of ADULT PEOPLE
-- loss of ROADS
- The nuances which support the above 4 interpretations
are as follows
-- The root SHIN-CAPH-LAMED means BEREFT of CHILDREN
-- the verse explicitly states LIVESTOCK will be lost
-- the verse explicitly states YOU WILL BE DIMINISHED
-- the verse uses a passive voice: YOUR ROADS will be lost;
the passive voice places an emphasis on ROADS--all of
them (Big or small)
COMMENTS: Note how we interpret the 2 phrases
---------------------------
They will BEREFT you
They will DIMINISH you
---------------------------
To refer to loss of CHILDREN vs LOSS OF ADULTS
But the verse never states ADULTS. Thus we
read ADULTS into the verse since it gives an
extra nuance and is consistent with extracting
as many nuances as possible. This READING IN of
ideas not explicitly stated but hinted at is
typical of the CLIMAX rule.

A standard reference for Rashis using climax may
be found at http://www.RashiYomi.com/example9.htm
Also visit the Rashi calendar at
http://www.RashiYomi.com/calendar1.htm
The CLIMAX series was presented from Mid August 2000
to Mid September (Xampl-1 thru Xampl-22 on the
calendar).(Or directly go to

It is summarized at Xampl-36.
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/xampl-36.htm
(Note: An alternate approach is to regard
the CLIMAX rule as a consequence of the
Rabbi Ishmael style rules: Thus in this verse
we have
-- (GENERAL) WILD BEASTS will be sent against you
-- (DETAILS) you will lose children,livestock,roads...
This is the famous GENERAL-DETAIL style of Rabbi
Ishmael.
This approach allows us to see the set of repeated
phrases as GENERAL TOPIC SENTENCE followed by a
DETAILED development)
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can use the above resources
to display verses with repeating phrases.
You can then have the students do the 3 exercises
listed above:
(a) Find the TOPIC sentence
(b) Describe NUANCES of each phrase
(c) Defend or SUPPORT the nuances
The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
The LIST below recaps the analysis of Lv26-22 presented above |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | RASHIS NUANCES |
Lv26-22b | The beasts will bereft you | Kill your CHILDREN*1 |
Lv26-22c | The beasts will KILL LIVESTOCK | Kill your ANIMALS*2 |
Lv26-22d | The beasts will HURT YOU | Kill your PEOPLE*2 |
Lv26-22e | The beasts will ruin the roads | Kill all ROADS*3 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The Hebrew root Shin-Caph-Lamed,BEREFT, means to lose
children Thus Rashi is simply emphasizing the particular
nuance of the root. Here are some typical verses
------------------------------------------------------
Gn27-45 Why should I lose both my children in one day
Gn42-36 You have bereft me from my children Simon,Joe
1S15-33 ..so may your mother become BEREFT of you
Jr18-21 your wives will become BEREFT & widows
Is49-21 How can I have children when I am BEREFT
-------------------------------------------------------
*2 Rashi here, of course, is using alignment
of the two verse halves
--------------------------------------------------------
the beasts will KILL LIVESTOCK
the beasts will DIMINISH YOU
--------------------------------------------------------
As the capped words show there are two separate themes
here
-- killing livestock
-- hurting people
*3 The verse states
----------------------------
Your roads will be desolate
----------------------------
Rashi interprets
-----------------------------------------
Both big and small roads will be desolate
-----------------------------------------
Note: Nothing grammatical was bothering Rashi.
Rather Rashis interpretation follows the cLIMAX
principle which requires reading extra nuances
into the verses.
True there is a difference in this phrase
-- the other 3 phrases in Lv26-22 are stated in the ACTIVE
---- The wild animals WILL BEREFT you
---- the wild animals WILL CUT your livestock
---- the wild animals will DIMINISH you
-- by contrast this last phrase is stated in PASSIVE
---- your roads WILL BECOME DESOLATE
So Rashi sees an emphasis in this last phrase on
the ROADS rather than on the act--hence Rashi interprets
that ALL ROADS (big or small) will become desolate
from animals.
This certainly is supportive to Rashi. But Rashis
main proof comes from the CLIMAX principle which
requires reading nuances into the verses.
