MULTI VERSE SENTENCES

BACKGROUND
----------
One of Rashis main 6 goals in his commentary is to clarify
grammar. One major grammatical function is to clarify sentence
structure. Of the 6,000 Biblical verses 99% of them form complete
sentences. A small percent (about 0.5%) of Biblical sentences
span two verses. Rashis job is to alert the reader to these
rare occurences

THE TEXT
--------
(Ex25-08) Make Me a Temple (Ex25-09) the way I am showing you

THE RASHI
---------
The above sentence spans two verses. We consequently infer that
the end of Ex25-09 is a new and separate sentence

-------------------------------------------------------------
End of Ex25-09 And this is how you will make temple utensils
              in the future
-------------------------------------------------------------
So eg the utensils in Solomons temple were made the same
way the utensils in Moses temple were made

THE LIST
--------
We present the clauses of Ex25-02:09 below. For purposes of
clarity we separate the main sentence clauses and the
parenthetical clauses into two columns. Other omitted clauses
are discussed in the footnotes. Our objective in this list is
to show how Rashi perceives the paragraph as one whole sentence.

COMMENTS

*1 Rashis point: Ex25-08 and Ex25-09 are perceived as 1 sentence
   --------------------------------------------------
Make me a temple the way I am showing you below*10
   --------------------------------------------------

It follows that the end of Ex25-09 is a 2nd & new sentence
   ---------------------------------------------------
And this set of instructions is how you will always
make temple utensils (RASHI: as eg in the utensils
   of the Temple of Solomon)
   ---------------------------------------------------

LONGER FOOTNOTES

    ------------------------------------------------------------
Make me a temple --(so that I can dwell among the Jews)--
the way I am showing you:((Both))Temple Structure & Utensils
    ------------------------------------------------------------

IN SUMMARY: Rashi sees the 2 verses as one sentence and
see other phrases in these verses as parenthetical.

L can mean TO or FOR

BACKGROUND
----------
Hebrew prepositions are frequently indicated by LETTERS. For
example, M means FROM, B means IN, L means TO. Closed analysis
shows that many of these letters have multiple meanings. For
example L can mean ABOUT, FROM, IN, WITH, ON, FOR or a personal
use.

THE TEXT
--------
Ex25-27 contains the prefix L (LAMED) 4 times.

THE RASHI
---------
In one of these phrases L is part of an idiom meaning OPPOSITE
while in the other 3 it means FOR. The same LETTER with
different meanings could easily cause confusion. Hence
Rashi clarifies the usages for us

THE LIST
--------
The list presents the 4 phrases of the verse with
the meaning of L in each case. The actual text Ex25-27 is
talking about
----------------------------------------------------
making RINGS on the table legs underneath the
table-top-foundation in order to hold (house) rods
that are used for carrying.
----------------------------------------------------
Here is the the verse
VERSELETTER L meansREST OF PHRASE
Ex25-27aOPPOSITEthe table, will the rings be *1
Ex25-27bFORhouses*2
Ex25-27cFORthe poles*2
Ex25-27dFORpurposes of carrying the table*2
COMMENTS

*1 The letter L (LAMED) is part of an idiom LeOOMath which
   means OPPOSITE.

This simply means that there were 4 rings, one on each
leg which were used for carrying the table. The rings
were placed ON TOP of the legs UNDERNEATH (OPPOSITE)
   the table top.

*2 The sentence would sound less clumsier without all these
nested clauses. It for example could have said
   ------------------------------------------------------
Opposite the table top will be the rings THAT house
   the CARRYING POLES
   ------------------------------------------------------

Rashi does not explain why all the nested clauses are used
I dont know a reason nor does any commentator discuss it.

THE GENERAL DETAIL STYLE

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the contributions of this email list is the idea that
the Bible uses STYLES each of which has particular meanings.

REFERENCE
---------
Visit http://www.RashiYOmi.Com/ishmael.htm for a description
of the 3 main Biblical styles and how they are interpreted

THE TEXT
--------
Throughout Ex25 we have 3 temple utensils that have a GENERAL
DETAIL style. Here is an example
------------------------------------------------------
EX25-12 GENERAL: Make 4 Rings on 4 corners
Ex25-12 DETAIL: ----(by) making 2 Rings per side
------------------------------------------------------

RASHI (Paraphrased)
-------------------
The statement MAKE 4 RINGS is general and ambiguous. It could
mean make 4 rings on each side or make 4 rings total. By
following this GENERAL PHRASE with a detail phrase -- 2 RINGS
PER SIDE 2 RINGS PER SIDE -- we obtain specificity which removes
all ambiguity. In other words the purpose of the GENERAL DETAIL
style is to help remove ambiguity

THE LIST
--------
The list below contains 3 examples from 3 different utensils.
In each case the GENERAL IDEA is followed by the DETAILED
stage. I have clarified this detail stage by inserting the
elliptical word (BY). e.g.
---------------------------------------------------------
MAKE 4 RINGS FOR THE ARK (by) MAKING 2 RINGS PER SIDE
---------------------------------------------------------
Insertion of such ellipticals smoothens clause connection
Here is the list
VERSEGENERAL STATEMENTDETAILS
Ex25-12cMake 4 Rings on 4 cornersby making 2rings per side*10
Ex25-19aMake 2 Keruvim on cover*1by making 1 Keruv per side
Ex25-25bMake a gold rim on table*2(by)making a foundation &rim
COMMENTS

*1 Actually one has to read two verses: Ex25-18:19 together
The verses form an GPG pattern(GENERAL PARTICULAR GENERAL)
 ----------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL:Make 2 Kerubim: They should be SCULPTORED,from the cover
DETAIL: -------- Make 1 Kerub per side
GENERAL:From the cover should the Kerubim be made
 ----------------------------------------------------------------

So the ABA form teaches 3 things
-- the 2 Kerubim should be 1 per side
-- Each Kerub should be 1 SCULPTORED PIECE(not SOLDERED)
-- And also the Kerub-Cover unit should be 1 SCULPTORED piece

For the requirement of SCULPTORED vs SOLDERED see *11

*2 Again we have two verses Ex25-24:25
 --------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL: Make a Gold rim for the tabletop
DETAIL: -(by) Making a foundation on the legs with a gold rim
 --------------------------------------------------------------

The details of constuction are as follows:
-- There were 4 wooden legs
-- connected by a SURROUNDING foundation
So the LEGS+FOUNDATION formed a wooden table
-- This table had a golden rim around the edge
(The type of rim that holds accidental spills)
-- On top of this table was placed a REMOVABLE TABLE TOP

A review of the verses and a picture is presented in footnote*12

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 There is one opinion that the ark had 8 rings, 4 Per side.
However the above list shows that the GENERAL-DETAIL method
enables one to read the verse smoothly as requiring only
   4 rings--2 rings per side.

*11 See http://www.RashIYomi.Com/other-20.htm for
a list of Biblical items that were made by SCULPTORING
  not SOLDERING *10

  See Nu08-02b Nu10-02e Ex25-18b Ex25-18c
Ex25-31a Ex25-31b and Ex25-19b for this SCULPTOR vs SOLDER
requirement in the CANDELLABRAH, TRUMPETS, & ARK-COVER

*12 Here is a picture

       ||||| B: Table FOUNDATION (Ex25-25)
      |   ||
     | | |
    |||||  |
    | | | A: The Table Legs Ex25-23
    | |
    | |

So the FOUNDATION (Ex25-25) and LEGS (Ex25-23) form
    an ordinary table.

The FOUNDATION had a golden rim around it.

On top of the table was placed the actual WOODEN TABLE
which was overlayed with Gold. Such removable table tops
are common these days also. The removable table top
can safely be stored away and not exposed. The Golden
rim protects the sitters at the table from accidental spills

Rashis exact language on these items is as follows
    ------------------------------------------------------------
Ex25-25a The actual table was 4 legs + Foundation. On top
of this was placed a removable table top LIKE THE
             TABLES OF KINGS
    ------------------------------------------------------------

    ------------------------------------------------------------
Ex25-24a The Golden rim is a symbol of royalty
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the text of the verses
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Ex25-03 Make a wooden table
    Ex25-03 2.5 cubits in length
    Ex25-03 1.5 cubits in Height
Ex25-04 Overlay the table with pure gold
Ex25-04 MAKE A GOLD RIM SURROUNDING THE TABLE
Ex25-05 (by 1st connecting the 4 legs with a SURROUNDING top)
Ex25-05 and making a golden rim to that top
    ------------------------------------------------------------
We have called the SURROUNDING TOP the FOUNDATION and the
actual removal table top the table.

NOTE: I have added the parenthetical word (BY) to give the
flavor of Rashis connecting the GOLDEN RIM OF THE TABLE to
the GOLDEN RIM of the SURROUNDING PERMANANT TOP

Finally I note that Rashi brings two opinions
-- The one we presented above:
Table=4 legs + Foundation + Removable table top
-- An alternate version which asserts that the foundation
was placed on top of the table!!?!?

This 2nd version would not make sense functionally since
    -- the golden rim and
    -- the foundation
would both surround the table (eg the way a table rim
    today prevents accidental spills)

But it is a respectable Talmudic opinion.

EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes

  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
